Really fucking annoyed by another entitled man

I’m a midwife. I answered the phone in a busy clinic today to an irate man. Apparently he’s applied online to volunteer in the maternity department and NOT HEARD ANYTHING. It’s NOT GOOD ENOUGH. He’s phoned THREE TIMES and no one is getting back to him. I explained that we don’t deal with volunteers ourselves and all the placements are dealt with by the volunteer office. This was OUTRAGEOUS apparently and he’s been passed FROM PILLAR TO POST and he just wants to know when he can come in to the Maternity Department and start volunteering!

I gave him the number of the volunteer office but I stupidly didn’t get his name. He was horrible and rude and our current volunteering vacancies are on the postnatal ward. What kind of man muscles his way in to the postnatal ward???? Especially when he has no expertise or experience to offer at all. The hall of him being furious because we aren’t being quick enough at facilitating his unfettered access to postnatal women and babies…..

Anyway I actually got a horrible creeped out feeling from him so I am going to call the volunteer office tomorrow and discuss. But just another entitled man throwing his weight around. Yuck.

Disgusting. This honestly made my blood run cold. Hope he gets nowhere near a mat ward.

Iflyaway · 20/10/2021 20:28

Yea, utterly creepy OP as well as entitled. Ugh.

That'll be a no from the volunteer office then.... I hope!

The thought of someone like that being around post-partum women.... just no.

What do volunteers do on a postnatal ward?

No, I wouldn’t want him by me. I wouldn’t actually want any random person by me in the postnatal ward tbh never mind this man.

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/10/2021 20:30

Am I the only one surprised that there are volunteers of any description on a maternity ward?

Wigglegiggle0520 · 20/10/2021 20:31
Angry
Justreallyannoyed · 20/10/2021 20:31

The fetch meals and drinks to women who can’t get up to get their own meals. They get women to fill out feedback forms. Other bits and bobs.

No, I’m confused too
Justreallyannoyed · 20/10/2021 20:32

We’ve been letting volunteers back in the wards since July.

I had no idea that a post natal ward had people doing voluntary work. That’s just bloody weird. What do they do????

Justreallyannoyed · 20/10/2021 20:33

If you google your local hospital and maternity volunteers you will find the info.

Do volunteers on postnatal wards have criminal records checks run on them? Just out of interest.

Christ, I would hope so 😱
Justreallyannoyed · 20/10/2021 20:34

Tbh, they mainly look a bit lost and make tea for people. Every volunteer I’ve come across is an older woman hoping to go on to be a midwife and is getting some experience to go on their personal statement.

I’ve never had a baby but I was recently on the antenatal ward and I’m pretty sure that the uniformed people who brought my food to my bed weren’t volunteers. They were in uniform?

And no, I don’t want any man coming to me with a feedback form when I’m recovering from childbirth.

I just think the whole thing is weird, and this man is creepy. Are they all DBS checked?

Redshoeblueshoe · 20/10/2021 20:35

No way should he be on a maternity ward.

crossstitchcat · 20/10/2021 20:35

What an absolute creep. I had a c section 7 months ago. My husband had to leave so i was on my own. Having someone like they near me while in that condition gives me chills.

Justreallyannoyed · 20/10/2021 20:35

Yes, I’ve just been looking at the web page and we do get a DBS.

Bloody hell. A man volunteering on a postnatal ward is NOT something I would like. I personally wouldn’t want a single volunteer there, but I guess these are the times. I really hope he isn’t placed.
He sounds horrific.

Justreallyannoyed · 20/10/2021 20:36

I’m not sure if they are everywhere nationwide. They also generally do just a couple of hours a week.

Volunteers on a post natal ward Shock ?

How do you distinguish between them and visitors?

Unchecked members of the public around Newborn babies and women who are in mo fit state to chase after them if they tried something funny?

Infection control?

my then 16 year old daughter had to get disclosure Scotland before she was allowed to volunteer in the hospital
Ohsugarhoneyicetea · 20/10/2021 20:38

He sounds dangerous, Id be smiling and polite while getting his name and address and making sure everyone is aware of exactly who the weirdo is and that in no uncertain terms the cops are to be called if he shows up.

nocoolnamesleft · 20/10/2021 20:38

Urgh. He sounds like he should be nowhere near a PNW. Definitely discuss with the volunteer office.
