This may be a folorn hope, but so many young progressive Democrats absolutely revere RBG and hate the Texas law. Maybe, just maybe, they will see where this censorship of language will lead? And start to realise that there needs to be a word for the class of people who have bodies which potentially have or had the capacity to gestate young?

Is it possible this will shake their complacency even a little bit?

Perhaps I am being naïvely optimistic.

MoltenLasagne · 23/09/2021 08:26

Wow [people's] rights are human rights.

Fariha31 · 23/09/2021 08:28

How the mighty have falllen. Once the ACLU stood up for civil rights, now its just a trolling account on twitter.
Pathetic.

MarshmallowSwede · 23/09/2021 08:46

Are men having abortions now? Last time I checked only women got pregnant, and only women had abortions.

Are we so woke and inclusive that men have been getting abortions lately? Wow.. I’m late to the party.

Fariha31 · 23/09/2021 08:53

@MarshmallowSwede You are indeed late to the party. Your would be amazed how many men people would scream and shout argue that men do indeed get pregnant and have abortions.

334bu · 23/09/2021 08:56

The emphasis on trans rights is quite remarkable. Of the 22 tweets posted by the ACLU on 21st September, 5 were about transgender issues.

TheElementsSong · 23/09/2021 08:56

That is just WOW.

BraveBananaBadge · 23/09/2021 09:42

Literally erasing women.

UsedUpUsername · 23/09/2021 09:44

@XiXimXerJingping

The ACLU are so far removed from their original purpose it beggars belief. Reminds me of Amnesty and Stonewall.
Not my observation, but it happens when activists take over a reputable organisation and ‘wear it like a skin suit, demanding respect.’

Wish I could remember who said it. Very apt here

42SrauvP · 23/09/2021 09:51

The replies to the tweet are gold.

WeeBisom · 23/09/2021 09:54

“A vindication of the rights of people”.

TheMarzipanDildo · 23/09/2021 10:06

Fucking nuts

futureghost · 23/09/2021 10:07

In a way its good. It so clearly shows that if you can't talk about women, we stop existing as a social group in political life.

I'm cutting and pasting this and using it as an example of the pernicious misogyny and real world impacts of this movement.

futureghost · 23/09/2021 10:09

@WeeBisom

This is the “all lives matter” style of feminism I see.
Brilliant! Grin
EsmaCannonball · 23/09/2021 10:16

It's a WOMEN'S rights issue; if men wanted abortions the issue wouldn't exist at all, you could get one at your local pharmacy.

The next step will be to posthumously trans RBG. Rising to the top of a male-dominated field will be taken as evidence that we shouldn't assume that s/he wasn't non-binary or an actual man.

knittingaddict · 23/09/2021 10:33

I listen to a left wing US podcast and it's been an education and I really enjoy it. I've had to give up on it now. They were talking recently about the Wi spa incident and said they thought it was ridiculous and probably never happened.

I caved and listened to one of their episodes this week and I can't give them another chance. I'm done. They were talking about the Texas abortion situation and I agreed with every word. Then the woman co-presenter talked about how she had been educated by Twitter or instagram or something this week and would stop using the term women when talking about abortion and pregnancy and would be using person instead. She was bending over backwards to thank them for their "education" and how she had been enlightened. She then pointed out to one of her male co-presenters that they had use woman instead of person, but that they would "get there eventually". I turned off at that point.

I don't subscribe to their podcast, so I'm no great loss to them. I did think about telling them why I no longer listen, but I can only contact them on Twitter and I'm not risking that, no matter how strongly I feel. I can't send an email as far as I can tell, so I will just have to vote with my feet.

FloralBunting · 23/09/2021 10:43

You know the edited quote would be quite at home in the pro-life groups that campaign for men to have an equal say, and even go some way to assisting the 'personhood of the unborn' strategies they have, yes?

Don't need the government to control access to abortion when you have the ACLU and pro-lifers insisting that men have just as much right to a say as women.

How fucking stupid are these people that they can't see it?

WomaninBoots · 23/09/2021 10:58

Wow. That's..... actually really disturbing. Confused

Graphista · 23/09/2021 11:09

Hope her dd Jane sues the arse off them! How utterly arrogantly stupid!

foxgoosefinch · 23/09/2021 12:48

It’s not just like men’s rights language, it is men’s rights language.

It’s the logical outcome of a member of an oppressed group wanting to “identify” as a member of an oppressor group. They advocate for the interests of the oppressor group.

After all, doesn’t Strangio identify as a man? And what would be the ultimate way to prove one’s innate masculinity but to take part in the oppression or erasure of women?

OP posts:
foxgoosefinch · 23/09/2021 12:51

Just as some trans women identify into femininity via oppression and humiliation as proof of their “innate” femaleness, because they see womanhood as inherently based in subjugation and submission to violence or oppression. (Cf Andrea Long Chu’s Females; Torrey Peters etc.)

OP posts:
merrymouse · 23/09/2021 13:56

Then the woman co-presenter talked about how she had been educated by Twitter or instagram or something this week and would stop using the term women when talking about abortion and pregnancy and would be using person instead.

Because the impact of naming the people who need rights is greater than the impact of their loss of rights?

RinkyStinky1 · 23/09/2021 13:56

Just wanted to join in the outrage. Beyond disgusted doesn't even cover it.

PrincessNutella · 23/09/2021 13:58

Now that I have been educated, I know I will never be transphobic enough to say "trans woman" again. The correct term is "trans [person]."

merrymouse · 23/09/2021 14:00

@WeeBisom

This is the “all lives matter” style of feminism I see.
