Feeling depressed. What the hell is the point of education?
We have a 15 year old house guest from Germany. Goes to a grammar school and is bright and interested in things.
I gave her the Youtube video to watch which shows a man asking American university students about whether they believe him if he (a medium height 40 year white old man) tells them that he's a completely different type of person. She watched it and then told me she would have believed the man. I asked her if she would believe me if I, a middle-aged woman, told her I was a 5 year old boy. She said she would. If I say I am a 5 year old boy, then I am.
Does the human species deserve to survive?

You're making her into some sort of weird German ambassador. Let he enjoy her holiday.

567fedup · 28/07/2021 15:39

She is enjoying her holiday. Which is in large part about cultural exchange / new experiences.

Two females having a discussion why do you assume she didn't want to?

BlueberryCheezecake · 28/07/2021 15:42

@Chickenyhead

Pro-women, not anti-trans.

But you already know that.

I wonder how many years it will take for this generation to be grounded in reality.

I can't think of a single thing that's pro-woman about the video or the exchange you've described. How does it help women to make stupid false equivalencies like "lol if you believe trans people exist you must believe I'm a 5 year old or that cats are dogs". That's clearly an attempt at an anti-trans gotcha, it's got nothing whatsoever to do with women's rights, and honestly it's such a stupid argument it deserves the stupid response your house guest gave you. She probably thinks you're nuts.

Probably because her response is a pretty classic teenager way to try and get out of a conversation.
KittenKong · 28/07/2021 15:45

Maybe tell her that you believe that she is a five year old boy.

‘Truth’ is a rather flexible concept these days isn’t it? And ‘my truth’ is just another way of saying ‘what I think’.

GCAcademic · 28/07/2021 15:45

@NuffSaidSam

She's winding you up/making a point.
I wouldn't be so sure. I think you underestimate the power of ideological "thinking" (or lack thereof).
User5827372728 · 28/07/2021 15:48

She isn’t your social experiment.

Leave her be, what you are doing is bizarre at best and wrong at worst

567fedup · 28/07/2021 15:57

I have no reason to suspect she wasn't speaking the truth about what she believes. And if you watch the video you'll see that several university students were prepared to believe that the white man in front of them was a different aged Chinese woman.

It's called having a conversation. It's how people learn about other people's knowledge, views and beliefs and have the chance to reassess their own, outside of their bubble.

Rather disturbing that so many people are trying to minimise the fact that youngsters across the world are being told that men are what ever they say they are.

Please stop saying GC women believe trans people don't exist. We know they exist. We simply disbelieve that they are the opposite sex, and yes that is akin to believing cats are dogs. Or more accurately, creating a special class of cats that you classify as dogs for whatever tenuous reason.

Stealhsquirrelnutkin · 28/07/2021 16:24

Perhaps you could sit down with her and watch Magdalen Berns video about Alex Drummond. Then ask if she thinks Alex is a lesbian and should be paid to go into schools and teach children about the unique difficulties and challenges that lesbians face in the UK?

567fedup · 28/07/2021 16:32

Magdalen Burns was a very fast talker Grin

@Datun - agree. This is not a clever-clever ‘anti-trans gotcha’. It absolutely goes to the heart of this whole debate: are there characteristics - age, sex, race, height, etc., etc. - anchored in some sort of objective reality or not? Is it a human right to be recognised as whatever we say we are? If so, does this apply to all of these characteristics that were previously seen to be matters of fact rather than identification or just some of them?

Blibbyblobby · 28/07/2021 17:30

OMG a speak to the manager joke - stop it, you're just too sharp, I can't take the wit!

Indeed. So telling. Lots of effort goes into presenting ones image as "I am a kind, progressive, inclusive, accepting person", and making the approved responses to the difficult questions. It's in throwaway comments like that that the mask slips and out comes what we all know is really there, the same old fashioned misogyny and belittling of female people that those of us in female bodies have a lifetime's experience being on the wrong end of.

Niar · 28/07/2021 17:36

Hello? What you are doing with your houseguest is pretty friggin inappropriate. Hmm

Datun · 28/07/2021 17:39

@Niar

It's not inappropriate to be very, very concerned with the education of our youngsters which makes them think that men can be women. Which makes them think that it's 'inappropriate' for little girls and women to be able to identify the male sex.

It's a safeguarding issue.

BiggerBoat1 · 28/07/2021 17:39

Why did you show her? It sounds as if you're deliberately testing her in some way which is cruel.

Fair play to her if she's winding you up.

secondbellini · 28/07/2021 17:41

I am gender critical, but it isn’t appropriate to have political conversations with a 15 year old foreign student who is staying in your house.

It’s already a stressful situation for a young person to be in.

Niar · 28/07/2021 17:46

No, it's a safeguarding issue for the op to show a 15 year old houseguest from another country videos on YouTube to 'gain insight' into how young people in Germany think about trans issues. It's manipulative. OP clearly feels strongly about this topic and has her mind up. It's an abuse of her power. I suspect the young teenager is visiting without her parents or guardians?

I've visited host families from about 12 onwards, mainly in France, I would have been mortified to be drawn into such a conversation. It's abusive.

Regularsizedrudy · 28/07/2021 17:56

You don’t sound like a very good host. Leave the poor German alone.

YellowClouds · 28/07/2021 18:03

Hi Mum, yeah the exchange trip is going well, although the woman is a bit full on, keeps badgering me with loads of question and scenarios. She seems to think she's a 5 year old boy and her cat is a dog. She also asks if my friends watch porn and sexually harass girls.

Apart from that all good, tho been a bit rainy!

Blibbyblobby · 28/07/2021 18:10

Sounds like you are thinking of an exchange-type scenario where the host family is not well known. The OP just says a house guest. Could just as well be the child of a friend who she has known since birth.

Of course the exchange scenario does raise an interesting question for the TRA crowd. Should an under-18 exchange student or their family be made aware if one of the adult women in the host family is a trans woman? If not, why is being given no choice other than to accept an ideological position from your host ok, but being simply asked to consider an ideological position by your host is not?
