Am I non binary?

YesClemFandango · 29/06/2021 17:05

Not a TAAT but it got me thinking.... Am I non-binary? I reject gender stereotypes. I would prefer a neutral title (working on it!). I wear clothes that could be considered typically masculine or feminine. To be honest at my age I'd feel a bit odd calling myself non-binary, but I wonder if it's short hand for how my peers understand my views (I'm a student)? How can I check?

Everybody I know is non-binary including myself. It really is a useless category as it includes everyone.

underneaththeash · 29/06/2021 20:43

If you think you’re non-binary you’ve got too little to do in your life. It’s really not a thing. People are just people.

TheElementsSong · 29/06/2021 20:50

I'm definitely non-binary genderfluid.

I rarely wear makeup, I'm usually in jeans, t-shirt and trainers both at home and for normal days at work. But sometimes I do wear dresses and heels and accessories, I'm told I scrub up nicely. My hair is of intermediate length, being a shortish bob.

Although DH cuts lawns and hedges and does the majority of the day-to-day cooking, I am the one who is better at baking cakes, biscuits and bread. Also, I do more of the household cleaning. But, I'm also the one who wields the powertools when furniture needs to be assembled, and I do the household decorating.

Also DH is the main breadwinner and I'm the little wife who works part-time. But my job is STEM rather than, say, fluffing feather boas.

The only problem is that I think gender is a load of socially-constructed oppressive quasi-religious bollocks, and that what humans have is (1) a biological sex and (2) a personality. So that probably invalidates my non-binary genderfluidity Grin

ufucoffee · 29/06/2021 20:57

No. You're not.

00100001 · 29/06/2021 21:03

Non-binary is the epitome of why all the gender identity thing is utter bollocks.

"I'm not a man or a woman, because I don't like skirts and I am not enjoying wearing the shirt and tie combo"

It's madness.

At some point this movement is going to start gatekeeping what a woman is, what a man is etc. And it will hopefully all fucking crumble because it DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING.

What makes that male a woman? Wearing a fres? Putting on make-up? What makes that female a man, wearing wide jeans and drinking pints??

Gender is a social construct.

Sex is real.

It's bit like your height measured in cm and whether you think you're tall or not. It's all fucking relative and bollocks.. you telling me you think you're tall, doesn't change the fact you're 5'6".

You might be a tall female in some places. Bit others, you're perfectly average. And indeed some places you'd be considered short. Call yourself whatever you want. But you're still 5'6".

But of course you couldn’t be non binary, 00100001 🤣 haha, that’s really tickled me, I’m imagining how confusing it would be if you were non binary 🤯

I think you'll find that actual barbies and action men don't exist, so we're all non-binary.

Kanaloa · 29/06/2021 21:28

It sounds like you’re just a regular person. I mainly wear jeans and (men’s) sweatshirts. I’m still very much a woman. I also don’t think telling people you are non-binary would explain your views, although I’m not totally sure what you mean by that.

Wallpapering · 29/06/2021 21:42

I doing it wrong then as been winging it for over 40yrs with my personality.

EastWestWhosBest · 29/06/2021 21:49

See I was thinking about this the other day.
People will say they are 'living as a woman' but I don't know what I do every day that makes my life as a woman different to my husband''s life as a man.

sweetkitty · 29/06/2021 21:58

I was thinking I’m like Eddie Izzard some days I’m in jeans and a t-shirt, no make up hair tied back, I watch the football with DH and do a bit of DIY with my drill, this is my “boy mode” days. Other days I’ll have a dress on, make up, hair down, might go shopping, do a bit of baking, housework “girl mode” days.

I think most of us have days like these and a whole load in-between, like others had said purely gender stereotypes. I don’t understand transgender then if gender isn’t really a thing, surely it should be trans-sex and you can’t change biological sex from the one you are born with?? Confused

I have this face Confused a lot just now

sweetkitty · 29/06/2021 22:00

In case you missed the boy mode and girl mode was pure sarcasm - sometimes writing it online you miss it Grin

Irishmom7 · 29/06/2021 22:02

I think you can also be non binary if you are a totally feminine woman. Because you are what you say you are, regardless of any objective fact. So I can be a non-binary ballerina who only wears pink and uses she her pronouns. Because I say I am. So yes, it’s pretty meaningless.

2Rebecca · 29/06/2021 22:04

Sex is binary for nearly everyone. Gender identity seems to be just how masculine or feminine you feel you are and is largely about your personality. I don't think how masculine or feminine I am matters very much and that if I wear lipstick and a silk dress one day and no make up and jeans the next I'm still me and nothing important changes about me. Much of my life isn't that different to the lives of the men I know. I think a lot of people dwell too much on what gender they want to be rather than what they intend to do in their lives.

LibertyMole · 29/06/2021 22:07

I’m non binary; I like reading, the Beatles, walking my dog, the colour orange, pizza, rum, woodland and swimming.

What do binary people like?

chickenyhead · 29/06/2021 22:12

I don't have a clue what binary people like.

I don't have a clue what gender I am supposed to fall under. We weren't taught to gender identify.

As such, because I have no gender identity, I cannot be cis or trans.

Fuck knows what I am.

LibertyMole · 29/06/2021 22:22

I thought having no gender identity was a trans identity.

LibertyMole · 29/06/2021 22:22

I have never met a binary person.

Cam2020 · 29/06/2021 22:36

It used to be called being an individual in the good old days when everyone actually wanted to be an individual and not labelled.

ThomasPenman · 29/06/2021 22:54

If you're questioning your gender you are definitely trans.

ThomasPenman · 29/06/2021 23:07

On a serious note, I can totally understand the drive to identify as non binary. The only definition of woman that includes men is based on stereotypes. So if you accept that the definition of woman does indeed include men then you are accepting that woman is a description of a stereotype and not a neutral sex descriptor. And who actually adheres to the stereotype of a woman? Not actual women 'cos we're all individuals.

The question I want to know from any non-binary female person is why have you accepted a definition of woman that excludes you? Why have you not said this is clearly not the right definition of woman because I am one and I am not a stereotype? This would be smashing the gender binary.

Voice0fReason · 29/06/2021 23:07

I am genderfree so definitely non-binary.

LibertyMole · 29/06/2021 23:09

Most people don’t actually want to smash the gender binary.
