Non-binary as a pointless option

Slimmingstar · 29/06/2021 12:25

There’s an event I’m going to for a hobby activity primarily attended by men. It’s a ‘clothing optional’ event.

The booking has closed now, to everyone other than females and ‘non-binary people’.
I imagine, in the hope more women will attend.

This is completely pointless, as of course non-binary means nothing and cannot be challenged.

I’m booking myself on as well as my (male!) penis having partner. However, if asked, we will say he is non-binary (as is the dog) and nothing can be said for fear of bigotry. I find this ‘non-binary’ option even more ridiculous, as all genitalia will on display!

OP posts:

@AssassinatedBeauty

Where would one pin a pronoun badge at a nudist event??
Nipple piercings? Ouch! 😅
NonnyMouse1337 · 29/06/2021 15:53

How does one lie about one's gender identity? If a person says 'I'm non-binary' then that's all that matters.

2old4thissite · 29/06/2021 16:12

Well, no-one should challenge it because. "People are what they say they are" Confused and just "Living their truth" (what the hell does that even mean in plain English?) even if their truth doesn't match the "Lived experience" of 99.9% of the population!!
Sorry, slightly off-topic, but this sort of thing just illustrates how meaningless this sort of thing is!Grin

DadJoke · 29/06/2021 16:14

@AssassinatedBeautyI'd ask again @DadJoke... Non-binary isn't defined, and if the OPs partner feels non-binary then who is to deny what his identity is in that moment?

He doesn't. He's lying. OP said as much. "However, if asked, we will say he is non-binary (as is the dog) and nothing can be said for fear of bigotry." If you are non-binary, you know damn well what it means, and whether you are.

NonnyMouse1337 · 29/06/2021 16:23

Of course he's non-binary. Everyone is non-binary. I'm sure her partner has probably worn a pink shirt at some point or grown his hair a tad longer than usual, or tried on some nail polish/eye liner/women's perfume or whatever in his life. Non-binary is meaningless precisely because no one on this planet is binary in how they live their life and express themselves.

TheWeeDonkey · 29/06/2021 16:23

Haha Bunshaped. I was just wondering how people can lie about their gender when everyone is naked and possibly -probably- shagging each other.

Non binary is a declaration. There are no tests. If you declare you're non binary then you're non binary.

Bunshaped · 29/06/2021 16:24

I don't see the word "lie" anywhere. OP did not say as much. She simply said they'll say he's non-binary. Maybe he is, on that particular day.

People are who they say they are, right?

DadJoke · 29/06/2021 16:27

@Shelddd declaring that you are non-binary when you are not non-binary does not make you non-binary, any more than declaring you are gay when you are not makes you gay.

She literally said "This is completely pointless, as of course non-binary means nothing and cannot be challenged"

To then declare yourself as non-binary is a straightforward lie. Anything else is just sophistry. It's shitty claiming spaces that have been designated for actual women or non-binary people.

But if I understand the OP correctly, the organisers want more female participants, in which case, they specifically want women and female non-binary people, don't they? Why don't they just specify that it is female people of whatever gender identity that they want?

I'm non-binary because I'm not binary. I would agree that non-binary means nothing in terms of man or woman - which was the point. It can't be challenged. No lies involved.

What's an 'actual' woman btw?

FloralBunting · 29/06/2021 16:35

My god. The anti-non binary suggestion that anyone could just claim to be non binary! As if anyone would go to the trouble of pretending to be non binary just to access things reserved for the non binary. DadJoke, you're totally scaremongering. Such a thing wouldn't happen. Check your cisprivilege.

colettesidonie · 29/06/2021 16:38

as of course non-binary means nothing

Speaking as someone who is non-binary, it might mean nothing to you but it absolutely means something to others. We are real people.

TBF you know all the people who identify as non binary will be male anyway.

OP will this be a socially distanced event? Or will it be the definition of a bunch of spare cocks at a wedding?

I mean it does seem quite silly but look after yourself OP.

CharlieParley · 29/06/2021 16:41

Is it sophistry when I say that I've never yet met a person who wasn't non-binary? I'm not ancient but old enough to have met a great many people but not one was just feminine or masculine. I really do believe that we are all non-binary, and if I ever had to declare an identity, that's what I would say. (Much as I found a church to belong to if things ever got dicey in the community we lived in, where being an atheist was the worst you could be (a church that quite officially welcomed atheists because it professed no creed).

Now I appreciate that that isn't your definition of non-binary, DadJoke and I accept therefore that as we disagree on what non-binary is and no official definition exists that disallows my interpretation, you and me would expect different people to register for an event as non-binary. But I do not believe that I am wrong.

If OP hadn't implied that OH was not NB... how would the NB defenders on this thread determine if a man signing up to the event when places have been limited to women and NB know that the man was or was not NB. Especially as he will not be wearing any clothes? How do we identify the NB without clothing or pronoun badge signifier?

NonnyMouse1337 · 29/06/2021 16:45

How dare the bigots gatekeep who is non-binary or not? ShockShock

But nonbinary means not identifying with a gender binary. That is literally what being gender critical is, I'm assuming the OP has already poisoned her husband with her wicked GC ways, so he is nonbinary.

Unless there was an asterisk stating you must be the sort of non binary that thinks you are alone are special and everyone else is cis and binary.. I think she's safe.

OnASpoonEdge · 29/06/2021 16:47

What's nonbinary anyway when it's at home at a nudist event? Hmm

OnASpoonEdge · 29/06/2021 16:48

I for one am shocked that nudist events find they struggle to fill up their spaces with women.

I'm glad you acknowledge that pretending to be non-binary is a shitty thing. That was my point.
