I've nicked a title, opened the door, dusted off the bar.

Come in and drown your sorrows, celebrate or just hang out in good company.

I'd love some cheese and marmite straws. I really need to get some marmite - DH is prone to chucking out anything that's past its best before date and doesn't understand that it's a purely theoretical concept for marmite.

midgemagneto · 12/08/2021 22:46

Can't you unchuck it?
I can't imagine having marmite past its date, but I don't look at the dates

SpringCrocus · 13/08/2021 00:20

Marmite doesn't go out of date?

ablutiions · 13/08/2021 06:56

In our house marmite has no time to go out of date, but it can, DH helped himself to,some at his parents house once. Layered it on good and thick Envy (not envy) and it tasted disgusting. Was a few years out of date EnvyEnvyEnvyEnvyEnvy. Luckily it didn't put him off marmite for ever. I mean, a world without it would be a very sad and empty place.

My DD makes a cracking cheese and marmite bread. Shall I ask her to rustle some up for us? She's 'one of us' too (very well brought upGrin)

midgemagneto · 13/08/2021 08:23

Recipe? Please

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 13/08/2021 11:24

@SpringCrocus

Marmite doesn't go out of date?
There are several food items that never go out of date. It's like gelatine sheets - they have a BB date because of the predictability of the packaging breaking down, it's nothing to do with the gelatine itself (if stored properly).

Marmite is so salt that it would be an astonishing organism that could grow in that environment.

SpringCrocus · 13/08/2021 12:11

I know. The ? was a bit spurious

SpringCrocus · 13/08/2021 12:12

More expressing surprise that people thought it would go out of date. (unless many years old)

SelfPortraitWithEels · 13/08/2021 16:07

[Makes mental note to check if actual salt has a BBE date.] Smile

SpringCrocus · 13/08/2021 16:50

Yes, it does! And sugar! And vinegar!
None of which are good media for bacteria/mould growth.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 13/08/2021 18:00

Ginger in syrup also has a sell-by. This, I can confirm, can be entirely ignored. Ginger in syrup is immortal.

SpringCrocus · 13/08/2021 19:24

I have food hygiene quals, am a scientist, have been a h & s professional and the whole best before/use by date stuff makes me so annoyed. It generates SO MUCH food waste

Waitwhat23 · 13/08/2021 19:36

Eh, I don't really do use by dates. If it smells or looks weird, I'll chuck it but otherwise, it's fine. It helps that I have an iron clad stomach and have never had food poisoning though - I'll probably change my tune if I ever do.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/08/2021 19:49

DH does ignore - and indeed join in the mocking of - BBE dates on salt.

Salt was used to preserve things for ever wasnt it? Nothing more comforting than marmite on toast. Am raising a toast to all stroppy vipers tonight and hope you all sleep well and safe.

Just for the hell of it, heres a quote:
*
“Women can change better’n a man,” Ma said soothingly. “Woman got all her life in her arms. Man got it all in his head.”
“Man, he lives in jerks-baby born an’ a man dies, an’ that’s a jerk-gets a farm and looses his farm, an’ that’s a jerk. Woman, its all one flow, like a stream, little eddies, little waterfalls, but the river, it goes right on. Woman looks at it like that. We ain’t gonna die out. People is goin’ on-changin’ a little, maybe, but goin’ right on.”*

HereticFanjo · 13/08/2021 20:50

Gin from a tin here tonight. Yes, I have reached that point of school holidays desperation.

SpringCrocus · 13/08/2021 21:11

Wine, oceans of wine tonight. SO incandescent with rage about Plymouth shooting. Fucking incels mysogeny not a hate crime, fucking hell.
And woke family members, oh just fuck off. Even H was"making excuses"
For the poor ikkle incel shooter.

No bandwidth to even listen, tonight. Taken myself off to my room, to drink wine, eat marmite crisps, watch stuff on my tablet and phone.

Sometimes I really hate the whole world.

mollythemeerkat · 13/08/2021 21:18

Hanging out with you in spirit Spring - when its horrible it just feels like everything is un-moored and you cant believe it will ever get better - take care of yourself in your woman cave. Been there.

SpringCrocus · 13/08/2021 21:19

Oh don't get me wrong, use by dates I respect because they refer to meat/fish/seafood ibut tend to sniff before throwing. Cooked rice and cooked pasta v careful as actually that is v dodgy.
Bbe dates on tinned/dried food, nope. Construct of supermarkets. If it smells /looks ok, it probably is.

Waitwhat23 · 13/08/2021 21:25

I have been a little heartened by the presence of loads of new, unfamiliar posters on multiple boards who are clearly starting to see the light.

@SpringCrocus I hope it gets better and you enjoy your crisps and wine

SpringCrocus · 13/08/2021 21:32

@mollythemeerkat thank you. I feel buffeted by the family, we all watched C4 News, It was brilliant coverage of the wider issues and yet H was "poor man" woke S and D were all "oh he was driven to it"

Since when did not having access to a women's body for sex entitle a man to kill his mum/women/random people?

How have we got to this place?

I'm off to do my meditation for the next hour , cos otherwise I think I might explode.

BlackeyedSusan · 13/08/2021 23:48

Chocolate Spring

SpringCrocus · 15/08/2021 00:05

Passing by to drop in yet more marmite and cheese straws, sloe vodka, cider and apple juice.

Been decluttering the larder and cellar here, in anticipation of maybe moving away.
Lots gone to food bank and charity shop today

Aparallaxia · 15/08/2021 00:10

Embarassing I would love some Neapolitan-style bread. Heavy (but not like rye bread), sour (but not sourdough), thick crust, chewy. Maybe some Neapolitan pizza dough too? Please? Pretty-please with flour dusted on top?

Here in Los Angeles only one bakery makes real pane cafon'. And they have to import all their ingredients from Naples. Maybe even the water. The Antica Pizzeria of blessed memory in Marina del Rey imported all their ingredients from Naples too. And this was way before San Marzano pomodori were on every supermarket shelf. Back when no-one had even heard of taralli, let alone made jokes about them, Weevils. >>sigh

ablutiions · 15/08/2021 12:14

Morning all. Am on hols so haven't been able to share the cheese marmite bread recipe yet. Bear with.
