Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Preferred names for streamlined feminist sections on MN.

MN have stated they intended to streamline the number of sub forums on the feminist board. They have proposed that one section is called sex and gender. Many of us feel that any section dedicated to discussing sex based rights should include the word feminism. There are multiple threads running discussing this issue but I thought it might be useful to have a single thread where @MNHQ could see the preferences of regular users in the hope we can agree on a board title which accurately reflects the subjects being discussed.

This is not a discussion thread, it's intended to collect the suggestions for board names in one place.

Two sub sections will remain in the streamlined feminist topic. The stated intention is to allow room for discussion about women's sex based rights on one and a second for more general feminist discussion.

How would you prefer these sections to be titled?

My preferences are:

Feminism and Women's Rights
Feminist Chat

‘Crocodiles be here do not enter‘ for the one that is GC?

ErrolTheDragon · 16/06/2021 12:58

This isn't a serious suggestion but I'm starting to think of the board as 'lifeboat feminism' ... women and children first.

'Feminism: women’s and girls’ rights (FWGR)' is good - in reality of course no one will mind if it also strays into protecting the rights and safety of boys when relevant.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/06/2021 13:02

Feminism: sex based rights

Feminism: modern intersectional

BettyFilous · 16/06/2021 13:09

Feminism & Women’s Rights
Dick-pandering feminism lite

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/06/2021 13:15

Feminism: Women's Sex Based Rights

Feminism: Chitty Chatty

Datun · 16/06/2021 13:25

@Ereshkigalangcleg

Feminism: sex based rights

Feminism: modern intersectional

I like that. Because both titles are positive.

And given that I think Justine said there are at least 1000 mumsnetters who didn't feel able to post on FWR, it should be very busy.

Floisme · 16/06/2021 13:28

I like 'Women and children first'. It nails exactly why I hang out here and it doesn't require any knowledge of feminist theory.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 16/06/2021 13:28

At least 1000?
Yes it will be busy.

Jamclag · 16/06/2021 13:30

I think division is a bad idea but at a push I think these two categories would at least illustrate the absurdity of the situation!

Feminism: Female centred

'feminism': Male centred

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/06/2021 13:32

I like that. Because both titles are positive.

Yes exactly. I'm sure both sides will call the other side what they like off the board, but I think they should be positive.

TedImgoingmad · 16/06/2021 13:33

How about:

Adult Human Females

Cool chicks

Witchesbelazy · 16/06/2021 13:35

Feminism

TRA

somethinginoffensive · 16/06/2021 13:36

Justine said 1000s have hidden the topic, maybe they just aren't interested?

DeRigueurMortis · 16/06/2021 13:45

@Datun

Yes, I like those.

Whatever the outcome it needs the word feminism. Maya Forstater has fought for women's right to speak about their legal status. And she won.

Agree but would prefer the following:

  • Feminism
  • Bollocks

I think that's more apt and inclusive descriptive but will go with the suggestion from the OP as I'm guessing my suggestion won't fly Grin

KimikosNightmare · 16/06/2021 13:57

I thought the aim was "Trans Issues" and Everything Else to avoid threads on scintillating topics such as "why are there trans Mother day cards" ( and I'm not making that up) clogging up the board.

Bergamotte · 16/06/2021 13:59

"Feminism: women's sex-based rights"

and

"Liberal feminism"
(or "Feminism: modern intersectional" for the second one as suggested by Ereshkigalangcleg upthread)

CardinalLolzy · 16/06/2021 14:01

General Feminism chat
Genderal Feminism chat

Don't post in the wrong one!

Waitwhat23 · 16/06/2021 14:11

I'm personally for -

Feminism - Women's sex based rights
Feminism - General

I would argue strenuously against the word trans being part of the title of the 'new' board as it isn't about trans issues, its about women's sex based rights.

Titles which reference different types of feminism - radical, second wave, Liberal etc - will just confuse everyone. I don't even know how I'd describe myself along those lines!

Not a fan of intersectional as that seems to have come to mean 'includes males' and indicates that women's sex based rights doesn't take into account other intersectional aspects.

Waitwhat23 · 16/06/2021 14:12

Alternatively -

Feminism - the cunty type
Feminism - centering dick

RoyalCorgi · 16/06/2021 14:15

I'm with whoever suggested Nest of Vipers.

I feel this project is doomed to failure, anyway. We all know that feminism chat is massively popular, and if they hive us off into two forums called, say, "general feminism" and "Evil Terfs", everybody will come to the "Evil Terfs" forum while "general feminism" will just fade and die.

Maybe MNHQ could contact all those who've hidden the board - and who therefore may be unaware of the original proposal and counterarguments - to find out if they are: A) uninterested in anything to do with feminism B) would like 2 boards - maybe with a couple of options for what they should be And C) if B happened would they be likely to participate on them?

Get some idea of whether there's much good faith on this (I don't doubt some, just not sure of the extent) or whether the complaints are largely a spoiling exercise.

TinselAngel · 16/06/2021 14:24
  1. Utopia (liberal feminism)
  2. The Gulag (women's liberation).
AfternoonToffee · 16/06/2021 14:31
  1. Feminism: The Good.
  2. Feminism: The Bad and The Ugly.

I will make no comment on which should be which. Wink

Why is that an issue?
