Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Preferred names for streamlined feminist sections on MN.

MN have stated they intended to streamline the number of sub forums on the feminist board. They have proposed that one section is called sex and gender. Many of us feel that any section dedicated to discussing sex based rights should include the word feminism. There are multiple threads running discussing this issue but I thought it might be useful to have a single thread where @MNHQ could see the preferences of regular users in the hope we can agree on a board title which accurately reflects the subjects being discussed.

This is not a discussion thread, it's intended to collect the suggestions for board names in one place.

Two sub sections will remain in the streamlined feminist topic. The stated intention is to allow room for discussion about women's sex based rights on one and a second for more general feminist discussion.

How would you prefer these sections to be titled?

My preferences are:

Feminism and Women's Rights
Feminist Chat

If we must...

Gender Critical Feminism
General feminism chat

In the spirit that it is 'gender critical views' that have recently had their status as a protected belief recognised we should use the term. This might drive more traffic because people are starting to ask what the term means.

ArabellaScott · 16/06/2021 09:55

Good point, Silly Doggy. Although the pedant in me says that all feminism is gender critical by definition.

McPancreas · 16/06/2021 09:55

Scolds Corner?

Cuts out the pretence that it is somehow a positive move by MN.

Floisme · 16/06/2021 09:56

I totally agree it's a monumental waste of all our time - but what choice do we have?
For the most part I agree with you that we don't have a choice. I was just making a specific point about not feeling inclined to expend my energy in thinking up a name for a sub-board I never asked for. I think that's down to the people who wanted it, otherwise where will this end - will we be expected to think up discussion topics for them too?

Sillydoggy · 16/06/2021 10:07

Indeed Arabella, it is an artificial distinction really perhaps we could go for

SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 16/06/2021 10:09

@33feethighandrising oh I completely agree with you. I wasn’t saying women should stop. I was just saying that this kind of immense distraction and time wasting merely adds to our burden and perhaps some people at MNHQ might like to reflect on that before floating these kind of ‘helpful’ suggestions for change.

One thing I worry about is that this will give an opportunity to shut down discussion of this type in the future without being seen to shut down women's discussions. They'll leave the 'inclusive' feminism board up that centres all that aspire to femininity but shut down the one that focuses on women's rights

I reckon that's the plan.
I think it's about 2 years too late for that to work though, too much sunlight has already been shone and too many women are finding other ways to talk to each other.

Feminism and Women’s Rights for this board.

Let the others choose a name for whatever it is they want to discuss in the new a separate space they are requesting.

lazylinguist · 16/06/2021 10:33

Much as I'm happy to define myself as GC, I think that calling the proposed 'sex and gender' subsection 'gender critical' would be likely to put off women who have not yet reached that stage, and therefore reduce the reach of the radicalisation portal . I like the original suggestion in tye OP.

Tibtom · 16/06/2021 10:41

"we recognise GC belief is a protected characteristic and we are therefore not going to breach the equality act by interferring with women expressing that belief in relation to women's rights" or "FWR" for short.
And "Chat about women's issues that are not in anyway related to sex"

umbel · 16/06/2021 10:49

Feminism (for women)
Feminism (for everyone)

JoodyBlue · 16/06/2021 10:50

The use of the term "gender critical " is interesting. I, for one, do NOT want to be categorised as anything. I do not define myself as a gender critical feminist or anything else to be honest. I am interested in the ideas of feminism and most of the arguments make rational sense to me.

Therefore I would strongly prefer not to have one of the boards called "gender critical" as it is unnecessarily pigeon holing quite reasonable, rational and evidenced view points. Neither are these view points "radical" in my opinion.

So I like "sex based" as it is unequivocal and clear.

Very good point, I think I was still a bit 'be kind' until I had been on this board for a while.

Prisons, womens sport and refuges brought be over to the light side

BlackeyedSusan · 16/06/2021 11:13

@SecondGentleman

Calling one of them "Radical Feminism" will put off a lot of posters who associate the word "radical" with the man-hating, unshaven stereotypes of feminism.

Rather than two competing generalist boards, I suggest that we have a main board ("Feminism and Women's Rights"), and also a "Liberal Feminism" board for those who feel that they have that specific interest.

now, you have pointed that out, I agree so withdraw the rad fem idea. (clearly not had enough coffee at that point)

I think lib fem is an option for the other board though.

so updated choice: feminism and womens rights and a lib fem board.

ArabellaScott · 16/06/2021 11:32

Come on, all those who so desperately wanted a separate board - what are your suggestions?

mollythemeerkat · 16/06/2021 11:37

@JoyousAsOtters

I think one should mention women AND girls as so much of the sharp end of women’s rights at the moment is around girls, so how about:

Feminism: women’s and girls’ rights (FWGR)

Perhaps Liberal Feminism Chat would work for the other one?

I’m keen that discussion boards should be more open rather than more narrowed, because many readers are new to the contexts, and I think centring either sex or gender in subject titles (not threads) can backfire.

Like this one and that it includes girls as well as women in the first category.

Or is that too divisive?

Seriously:

Feminism and Women's sex based rights
Feminist chat

Justine appears to be clear that this is not separating the two beliefs into two separate boards but providing a space, apparently so desperately needed, by those who would like to talk about other bits of feminism.... that apparently aren't affected by biology or sex based rights.

I'll be fascinated to see how that goes, I think there'll be a hell of a lot of elephant blindness involved.
