Not a surprise and hopefully it’ll open some eyes about the utter ridiculousness of allowing someone who is male to compete against women in weightlifting

NINE YEARS?

WHAAAAAAT?

SheldonesqueWontTolerateFools · 24/06/2021 14:34

Nine years too much for some.

Clearly.

Lysistratathereindeer · 24/06/2021 17:24

Men have shown time and again in the Olympics how much they disregard women. Look at skeet shooting - if any sport can be mixed sex, shooting can surely? Well skeet shooting was, until a woman won for the first time in 1992. In 1996 it was promptly declared single sex, except they didn't have a women's competition, just a men's one. So the woman (Zhang Shan of China) didn't even get to defend her title in a women's only event.

Monty Panesar (England cricketer) has voiced his support for women

IrmaFayLear · 24/06/2021 18:20

That’s Monty’s media career scuppered, then. I liked MP before this, now I like him even more Smile

SheldonesqueWontTolerateFools · 24/06/2021 18:37

Some legends are total legends.

That would be you Monty.

andyoldlabour · 24/06/2021 18:41

I wonder if Monty is aware of the Kent women's cricketer Maxine Blythin?

McDuffy · 24/06/2021 18:48

Go on Monty! He's a star 💪

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 25/06/2021 07:21

I'm not remotely a conspiracy theorist, but the way that powerful SM outfits silence people who make comments that are entirely within the law does make me wonder WTF is going on.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 25/06/2021 07:21

Sod it. Quote didn't come up. Was the one about that personal trainer having his Insta account threatened.

Wow. I didn’t know that!

Bloody uppity women winning things🙄

Ekofisk · 25/06/2021 13:57

The story of the 1928 women’s 800m race is interesting too. It seems that the story that it was too exhausting for women and that was why it was removed from the women’s Olympic schedule (and only reinstated in 1960) is rubbish.

The transwomen in women's sports thing is incredibly tricky for TRAs and anyone who has spent their time calling women 'bigots' for believing that TWANW.

This is because the inclusion of the likes of Laurel Hubbard at the expense of a woman is pretty much indefensible. There really are not arguments to defend this, even if you were going to wang on about testosterone levels etc the photos and the results speak for themselves.

But

We know that the nature of this ideology means that it is all or nothing. There is absolutely no room for nuance. The likes of Owen Jones or Jameela Jamil cannot be seen saying that they believe that TWAW but that sports are a special case in which biology matters. So they say nothing at all. This has been a huge 'trans' story in the news this week, but actually there has been very little defence of it, even from the most usual of suspects.

littlbrowndog · 25/06/2021 16:21

This is one of the best pieces I have read

Goes from Jess to Hubbard to people getting cancelled on Twitter to Australia

AlecTrevelyan006 · 25/06/2021 17:35

That’s very good

Yes, it's rather entertaining watching people standing on the wrong side of history, gagging themselves, lest they advertise their location.

WarOnWoman · 25/06/2021 19:13

Looks like Nini is going.

@WarOnWoman

Looks like Nini is going.
Excellent! So happy for her.

Although should be instead of, not as well as.

BettyFilous · 25/06/2021 19:44

That’s brilliant news! Go Nini!

mum2jakie · 25/06/2021 20:49

What does it mean by a tripartite invitation? Will she still be representing New Zealand?

Datun · 25/06/2021 21:10

I don't get it either. Feels like a sop. Hubbard should not be competing.
Ekofisk · 25/06/2021 21:33

It is a bit of a fudge, but the process is there to be used.

Tripartite invitations give small countries that traditionally only send a small number of athletes an opportunity to include more participants, so Tonga qualifies on that count.

There are invitational places in 16 sports, which includes weightlifting (4 invitational places available for women).

The IOC reserves the right to accept late nominations (original closing date was in Jan 2019 but that was pre Covid).

Sexnotgender · 25/06/2021 22:05

Excellent news!

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 25/06/2021 23:14

Hope Nini has time to train.

Bet she's fired up.

I've never watched weightlifting, but, I'll be tuning in!

Mollyollydolly · 25/06/2021 23:17

Good news for Nina. Did you all see the engagement map on Twitter. Proud to be on T* Island
