Laurel Hubbard to go to Tokyo

Not a surprise and hopefully it’ll open some eyes about the utter ridiculousness of allowing someone who is male to compete against women in weightlifting

@Helleofabore

I am just posting this quote

Under IOC guidelines, issued in November 2015, athletes who transition from male to female can compete in the women’s category without requiring surgery to remove their testes provided their total testosterone level in serum is kept below 10 nanomoles per litre for at least 12 months – a rule followed by the IWF.

As a reminder to all those posters who come and ask ‘where are all the Olympic transwomen medalists.?’ As their gotcha.

Does that mean that any man with low testosterone can compete in the women's category?

How do they define someone who is transitioning from male to female? Is it anyone who says they are?

And what about men with low testosterone who aren't 'transitioning'? Can they also compete against women? If not, why not?

NiceGerbil · 05/05/2021 22:48

Hubbard has had injuries and is getting on in years for an Olympian to say the least.

If Hubbard does not come first this will be 'proof' that it's all fair.

I've seen things about throwing competitions to give ammo to this argument (not this weightlifter, but in general).

NotBadConsidering · 05/05/2021 23:03

Regardless of what happens in Tokyo, Hubbard is claiming one of two spots for the Oceania region to actually go to Tokyo. That means another woman from the Oceania region has been denied the opportunity to go to the Olympics. That woman could possibly be Iuniarra Sipaia who came 3rd in the Pacific Games behind Hubbard. This woman, or another woman from the Oceania region will not get to say “I am an Olympian”.

These women matter.

MoltenLasagne · 05/05/2021 23:03

Nice guidelines only suggest treatment for men with testosterone levels below 8nmol/L.

So essentially Laurel could be eligible to compete in the women's category and yet not be considered to have low testosterone for a natal male according to the NHS.

manatsu · 05/05/2021 23:07

10 nmol/ litre?! Based on what science exactly? Even in women with severe PCOS you usually don't see above 5.

manatsu · 05/05/2021 23:09

Never forget that Hubbard was a rich (inherited) middle aged white male who transitioned and then beat young women of colour who grew up in poor, difficult backgrounds and gave their all to their sport. And yet libfems want to cheer on Hubbard as brave and groundbreaking.

No. I won't do it. I don't support this. It's so clearly unfair.

They do matter NotBad, unfortunately we are so far down this road it's now necessary to watch this play out on the world stage. It's a travesty that these women's careers coincided with the career of a person of average sporting ability who seems determined to rob some of the best females in the field of their opportunity to shine.
NiceGerbil · 05/05/2021 23:17

Ah. So reading spoilt/ used to getting what they want.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 05/05/2021 23:25

This is unfair. As others have said, not just on other competitors but on the woman who loses her place on the team.

miri1985 · 05/05/2021 23:32

I feel incredibly sad for the woman who lost a slot because of this but something on a scale like this needed to happen to show how ridiculous these rules are, transitioning does not take away a male puberty.

Most men get the issue of fairness in sport, they do not need it explained to them.

As unfair as it would be, I hope Hubbard despite being the oldest by a considerable margin wins the whole damn thing

McDuffy · 06/05/2021 08:50

This has really rankled me this morning. We had a session on "inclusion" at work last week, always a good thing apparently. But sometimes exclusion is necessary Sad

toffeebutterpopcorn · 06/05/2021 08:50

Where does it end? People feel like they are entitled to all sorts.

Sexnotgender · 06/05/2021 08:54

This gives me so much rage.

Argh!!!

allmywhat · 06/05/2021 08:55

Based on it being very difficult or perhaps even unsafe for TW to keep their testosterone in female range. 🤐

Lordamighty · 06/05/2021 08:59

I feel sorry for the female competitors who will be disadvantaged by Hubbard’s inclusion but the world needs to see this play out at the Olympics.
The unfairness of allowing biological males to compete in the women’s category will be hard to defend when Hubbard walks off with a medal.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/05/2021 09:00

Based on the medical facts that if it is reduced further in men it can cause harm, maybe make them feel sad, even depressed or unsexy!

Poor mens!

Oh dear how sad🙄

NecessaryScene1 · 06/05/2021 09:09

Not any man. Only men who say they're women and they want to compete in the women's category.

I don't know why, but this always pops into my head.

But if TWAW then it should be normal and healthy for them to have testosterone in the female range, shouldn't it?
doublehalo · 06/05/2021 09:22

@MoltenLasagne

Well at least it will be bright, glaring sunlight...
Exactly what I was thinking. Let it all play out on a global stage.

Devastating for the women who've sacrificed and trained their guts out for years and years though.

The fucking cheek.

NotBadConsidering · 06/05/2021 09:23

Similarly, if TWAW, and Caitlyn Jenner has always been a woman, that means Caitlyn was a woman when Caitlyn competed at the Olympics in 1976 in the men’s decathlon. So why can’t Laurel be like Caitlyn and compete on the men’s weightlifting team?

midgedude · 06/05/2021 09:29

Thanks to notbad for finding out who has been displaced

DH is furious and informed me that even with lower testosterone this person will still have physical advantage

He has also been spreading the word with his sporty mates

NecessaryScene1 · 06/05/2021 09:31

I vaguely thought Hubbard had competed in the last Olympics and injured themselves trying for a record. Was that actually a world championship or something?

Changemusthappen · 06/05/2021 09:32

Ultimately the authorities are condoning drug taking in competition, I am very surprised that this hasn't been raised amongst athletes.

I really don't understand why no-one is challenging this properly, I wish male and female athletes would speak out en masse.

LostToucan · 06/05/2021 09:39

Commonwealth Games - tore ligaments in their left elbow, which was potentially career ending.
