I see the last thread filled up, but there might still be enough to discuss as a round up of the afternoon’s events to keep going into a second thread.

Thread one here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4228233-Maya-Forstaters-appeal-skeleton

OP posts:

It does feature a few people who are determined to misunderstand the case and the legal arguments, but it also has a much larger number of people who can understand the points being made, and why they’re so important

This thread likewise:

We used to get told off at school for 'wilful misunderstanding'. It was seen as form of sullenness and stupidity.

Now it seems to be something of a national pastime and a demeanour to which many politicians aspire.

Maya Forstater joins WHRC to report on last week's CRUCIAL legal appeal in UK - added to today's panel

Reminder to anyone who's registered - it's 15:00 today (Saturday). Still time to register.

Maya's now blocked on Twitter by the interim CEO of the Fawcett Society. (Although not sure if anyone remembers what that was Grin).

Lucy Hunter Blackburn has a very astute comment in re: Fawcett and Felicia W's block of Maya F:

Has the policy and political establishment ever worked quite so hard as they currently collectively are to play the emperor’s new clothes game, and freeze out anyone attempting the boy in the crowd role? It’s the most amazing closing of ranks of the paid against the unpaid.

The Fawcett Society really are chocolate fireguard territory.

highame · 02/05/2021 12:25

How on earth can these women's organisations' believe that they can offer robust arguments for women's rights when they can only offer a one-sided debate. Perhaps it's to do with declining standards in our Universities? Is there now the gumption free option on degree courses?

Unsurprisingly, Sue Pascoe is empathising:

Stay strong. People use you as they use me for their trolling and their own obsessional causes. Ignore, block and report if really bad is my approach. It only gets really bad for me if fired up deliberately. What they seem not to realise is they just fire up bigotry against women

Sue Pascoe - who tweeted this a claim about the WPUK and a report to the UK Prevent police terrorism unit (further discussion in that thread):

'Forced Teaming, Feminism, LGB and ‘Trans Rights’
May 25, 2020

(extract)
"... the idea that there is a shared goal, or an attitude of we are all in this together, we are allies, in order to disarm, gain trust and manipulate his target. The social contract that most people have been educated or raised in – that we should try not to offend others, be polite, be accommodating – makes forced teaming incredibly difficult to resist. In general, we don’t want to be rude and say ‘actually, your problems or goals are different to mine and so no, we should not work together’ or ‘no, I don’t feel comfortable with this’. (continues)

Hilarious.

You think Fawcett conducts their policy debates and research on Twitter? Okaaaaaaayyyyy.

And it's funny but my brand of of feminism means that no woman owes anyone her headspace or attention on her own time. She can block whoever she wants.

A chocolate fireguard is more useful at least you can eat the chocolate. What is the point of the fawcett society?

From some recent comments, it seems to be helpful in so far as it's blocking subscribers who are making polite enquiries in re: Maya Forstater and other matters. That action had prompted some subscribers to reflect that Fawcett is no longer a good use of their monthly DD and they're planning to direct it to an organisation that is more woman-centred.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 02/05/2021 20:47

Jane Clare Jones: So, the interim CEO of the UK's foremost women's rights charity has pre-emptively blocked all the major grassroots GC groups.

Which is picture perfect image of the bankruptcy of British institutional feminism.

Tell us again how we have all the institutional power will you?

An excellent point, thank you.

I think they're a complete waste of space of a gravy train organisation who have forgotten who they're supposed to be protecting the rights of. You sound like you conduct your research on Twitter though?

StillFemale · 02/05/2021 23:20

Tbh until I came here (FWR) I’d never heard of Fawcett and I’ve been vocal about women’s rights since a child so not new to the topic. So I’d saw their irrelevance is not new

Has anyone seen this article . Similar arguments . Very scary

It’s in the mail.

The Fawcett Society is not a woman.

It's a charity that identifies as representing women. Blocking women and other organisations representing women raises questions about their charitable aims.

alkanet · 09/05/2021 00:50

That seems to be a thing with charities. They get established and work more to protect the organisation than the thing they were formed to protect. (Just a random observation, is there any real evidence on this...anyone?)
