LGB Alliance is now a registered charity

It took over a year...

"LGBA applied to register as a charity in March 2020. Its purposes are to promote equality and diversity and human rights.
The test of charity status is set out in law. A charity is an organisation with exclusively charitable purposes for the public benefit, that is subject to the jurisdiction of the High Court of England and Wales. If it meets these legal tests, it will be entered on the charity register.
It is not the Commission’s role to make value judgements about the aims or ideas put forward by any organisation. Instead, its role is to decide whether an organisation’s purposes fall within the legal definition of charity.
The Commission received a number of objections to the registration of LGBA as a charity. It carefully considered these as part of making its decision. In handling this application, the Commission has had regard to the Public Sector Equality Duty.
Registered charities fall under the Commission’s regulation, and their trustees must continuously meet the legal duties and responsibilities set down under charity law. A charity can promote the rights of one or more specific groups, but may not do so whilst demeaning or denigrating the rights of others, including on social media – and the Commission will consider taking regulatory action where that occurs.
The full decision, explaining the grounds for registering the organisation and the objections that were considered, can be found on GOV.UKK_"

Their influence has created such a toxic debate, what did they expect. Only bullies do what they did to Alison Bailey.

@Aposterhasnoname

Don't report this post, let it stand

When someone shows you who they are believe them.

This. I’ve only ever seen someone wishing death on others once on mumsnet, and that post was it. Please let it stand. But just in case, I have a screen shot,

Oooh, I’d love to see it!!
yourhairiswinterfire · 20/04/2021 18:33

Thanks so much Ereshkigalangcleg! (Can't believe I didn't think to look up that thread 🤦‍♀️)

So this may help Allison? It looks like the CC did their homework, and their reasons for granting charitable status are solid. So ''she helped form a hate group'' won't wash now, should anyone try it?

Kate Harris of the LGB Alliance at the LGB Alliance Scotland Launch in Glasgow on 18 January 2020

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/04/2021 18:34

I don't think it would wash with grown ups in a court anyway, but yes, I think it strengthens her position if that allegation was made.

@ChloeCrocodile

I'm really pleased to hear that my donations to LGB Alliance will now attract gift aid!

I'm surprised that the charity commission have said that charities are not allowed to denigrate the rights of others though. Campaigning to have the sex based exemptions in the equality act removed would be a fairly straight forward case of denigrating the rights of others, I'd have thought. And we all know a charity which has been trying to do that for years.

Exactly! How does that work when charities like Stonewall and Mermaids are allowed to denigrate my and my daughter’s rights?!
Bordois · 20/04/2021 18:50

This along with Lesbian Labour going live has pretty much made my day 🤩

OhHolyJesus · 20/04/2021 18:53

@allmywhat

Has anyone ever actually sent objections to the Charity Commission re that charity's charitable status?

I considered doing so some time ago but as it I never did abs then I had hoped someone else had done.

Maybe now is the time to gather together for some kind of action.

Please PM me if anyone wants to be involved or has screenshots/links etc where there is evidence of not meeting the CC's points as noted on this thread.

(Disclaimer:I'm swamped but I will do my best.)

Excellent news.

(Btw, I think I know why that Liam bloke doesn't like MN - some of us might have mocked him a bit for calling himself 'Dr' on the strength of an honorary degree. Very poor form.)

ListeningQuietly · 20/04/2021 18:59

I deal with the Charity Commission regularly and am on their feedback panel
DO NOT expect swift action on anything.
They will have checked EVERYTHING before today's action

Sophoclesthefox · 20/04/2021 19:25

Great news and congratulations to LGB alliance.

Some people do seem to be taking it badly. Ah, well.

ASugarr · 20/04/2021 19:32

Devastating news to the LGBTQ+ community. Hopefully this will be revoked shortly.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/04/2021 19:36

Why would it be revoked? They don't take a vote on TwitterConfused, they will have already considered the application in depth. I suspect all the people who disagree are just going to have to get over it and recognise that there is room for an LGB focussed charity along with the many LGBT ones which centre trans issues.

yourhairiswinterfire · 20/04/2021 19:37

It's fantastic news for the LGB community who support them. I doubt it will be revoked. The Charity Commission have really done their research.

Why is everyone so eager to take this away from lesbians, gay men and bisexual people? Why aren't they deserving of a group that recognises them, and solely campaigns for their rights and interests?

However they have proven to be homophobic to it's own community numerous times. Hopefully they will receive all the appeals to their choice today and listen to the community.

As part of that community. It isn't.
Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/04/2021 19:39

They are as much "the community" as any other lesbian woman, gay man or bisexual person, and from what I can see many of the people complaining are not.

ASugarr · 20/04/2021 19:39

Okay well as a member of the community I beg to differ.

It's an interesting question, really, isn't it?

Like women aren't, either.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/04/2021 19:40

Yes well there are members of the community on this thread too, many of whom support LGB Alliance.

Okay that's great however they are supporting a homophobic organisation.

Don't think so. The Charity Commission spent a year deliberating over this and the decision is carefully and fully argued.

Saying 'The LGB Alliance is a hate group' doesn't actually MAKE it a hate group you know. You need evidence for that - and the Charity Commission looked at all the evidence and found none to support the allegation that they are a hate group.

ASugarr · 20/04/2021 19:42

There's plenty of evidence on it being a hate group. Don't think it will last long as a charity.

CorvusPurpureus · 20/04/2021 19:42

Excellent news for the LGB community. Really good decision Grin

CardinalLolzy · 20/04/2021 19:42

The denial of same-sex attraction I've seen about this is absolutely gobsmacking. I genuinely thought we as a society had made strides in terms of decreasing homophobia but no, it's there and as ugly as ever. Grim.
