LGB Alliance is now a registered charity

It took over a year...

"LGBA applied to register as a charity in March 2020. Its purposes are to promote equality and diversity and human rights.
The test of charity status is set out in law. A charity is an organisation with exclusively charitable purposes for the public benefit, that is subject to the jurisdiction of the High Court of England and Wales. If it meets these legal tests, it will be entered on the charity register.
It is not the Commission’s role to make value judgements about the aims or ideas put forward by any organisation. Instead, its role is to decide whether an organisation’s purposes fall within the legal definition of charity.
The Commission received a number of objections to the registration of LGBA as a charity. It carefully considered these as part of making its decision. In handling this application, the Commission has had regard to the Public Sector Equality Duty.
Registered charities fall under the Commission’s regulation, and their trustees must continuously meet the legal duties and responsibilities set down under charity law. A charity can promote the rights of one or more specific groups, but may not do so whilst demeaning or denigrating the rights of others, including on social media – and the Commission will consider taking regulatory action where that occurs.
The full decision, explaining the grounds for registering the organisation and the objections that were considered, can be found on GOV.UKK_"

@Zeev

I'm still entitled to feel uncomfortable over the fact people consider transgender people before they transition dead.

Like, calling their old names "deadnames" and so on?

Dead name just refers to their name. Not who they are. Saying that someone is dead is different personally. But if that's how you see it then sure.
NiceGerbil · 20/04/2021 21:15

I'm really sorry you've been nearly killed lots of times, that's awful.

If it's from a relationship (which I assume it must be) then there is support on MN if you want.

I'm not on the relationships board so others would know better than me if there's any particular long running support threads for that topic.

Sorry to jump in like that but I know you're young and that's really upsetting to hear.

persistentwoman · 20/04/2021 21:15

Thank you ListeningQuietly for confirming what so many of us guessed. That the Charity Commission have followed due process and carefully evaluated and applied the law correctly.
Sad that some extremists are not prepared to acknowledge this and are now attempting to intimidate and bully an LGB organisation.

Of course that's COMPLETELY different Grin

Kotatsu · 20/04/2021 21:16

This figure of speech is a damp squid.

I thought it was a 'damp squib' - ie a type of firework. I think this because when I was a kid I bought one from Cosmetics To Go (lush before they were lush), and that was the pun they explained (prolly not a great pun since they had to explain it)

Anyhow.

Congrats to the LGBA - a much needed and much appreciated charity.

And also to TransWidows, call yourselves what you like and what seems entirely appropriate - if your husbands declare they never really existed as men, then 'widow' seems entirely fine to me, with no skin in any game here. And if my kids decided to pronounce me dead, then I'd be hurt, but I can't imagine that I would want to force them not to, Seems to me that how people feel is up to them.

Don't worry about the derail, it was enlightening. You crack on with that submission. Cake

It's from the past. Not now. I'm safe now but thank you. I hope at least that can kinda explain why I find this kind of language really awful. As I've someone who has been wished dead and almost killed and it's horrible to hear from someone. Especially someone you once loved. That's why I'm passionate about words like 'widow' not being used. I totally get that others disagree, but some of the content I've seen on that twitter account in particular is very dark and I don't think should be as public as it is (if that makes sense). Plus it does really hurt because I have a family member who is trans and I find it horrible to hear people consider the past them dead. They are the same person, just a little different. That's all. Hope that clears that situation up.

I think its a great shame if this thread celebrating the achievements of the lesbian-led organisation LGB Alliance becomes derailed.

Personally id like all of them

The CEO is a man I'm pretty sure.
Scepticaltank · 20/04/2021 21:20

What else though. You want the twitter thread banning so is it just the word widow or are you prejudiced against the women for other reasons?

Mummyoflittledragon · 20/04/2021 21:20

@yourhairiswinterfire

Cool. You can think its fine. I personally don't and want twitter to monitor the content as some of it is very triggering.

They're women, plenty who got out of abusive relationships, supporting each other. Why on Earth do they need ''monitoring''? Hmm

And you don’t think marrying a man for better or for worse, who then decides he’s a woman, is turned on by fantasies that he has a female body, expects his wife to play along with this, takes his wife’s identity and safe spaces away from her remotely triggering @ASugarr?

I'm not prejudiced against women at all.
ListeningQuietly · 20/04/2021 21:21

I have a friend who is trans
they had full surgery over 30 years ago
but they have NEVER hidden their birth name

or status

anybody who shouts deadname would raise MLR / safeguarding alarm bells to me.
but I'm a pedant

LastRoloIsMine · 20/04/2021 21:22

And Asugarr is managing to derail yet another thread!

Please please dont let them do this. This thread is about celebrating the amazing achievement of LGBA. This poster will use every trick they can to derail and eventually get the thread deleated. Don't engage.

Whats ironic is that I didn't. Other things were mentioned to me or about me. I actually didn't do anything 😂
Erkrie · 20/04/2021 21:23

Yes I think it would be a shame to let it be derailed yet again, which always seems to be the way in recent times here.

Scepticaltank · 20/04/2021 21:24

Dead name just refers to their name. Not who they are.

And trasnwidow just refers to a marriage, not who they are.

Maybe you could leave them alone to define their own identity?

Sophoclesthefox · 20/04/2021 21:25

Good luck with the submission, tinsel

I'll let you ladies continue your argument as I've given you all the evidence on their misogyny, homophobia and transphobia but you all refuse to actually look into it. But I can imagine numerous charities will create outrage and this will come to an end. But we shall have to wait and see 🤍
InspiralCoalescenceRingdown · 20/04/2021 21:25

I thought it was a 'damp squib' - ie a type of firework.

You're absolutely correct, I was deliberately getting it wrong as a reference to the IT Crowd Grin

AssassinatedBeauty · 20/04/2021 21:29

They can create as much outrage as they like, it will simply reflect badly on them and make not a jot of difference to the charity commission's decision.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 20/04/2021 21:29

This is absolutely brilliant news for the LGB community.

And good luck, Tinsel!

ListeningQuietly · 20/04/2021 21:29

TBH
there are thousands of extant charities which do not comply with current rules
but winding them up is more stress than its worth

there are also thousands that have massively diverged from their original goals

and thousands whose governance is beyond shit

but
the current government has actively defunded the CC since Pickles got his way in 2010

the cost of the LGBA pre checks was clearly substantial
which implies that they knew that the alternative would have cost more

its sad that the resources had to be expended
but excellent that the decision process is on record
as anybody trying to overturn it has to start from point A
