LGB Alliance is now a registered charity

It took over a year...

"LGBA applied to register as a charity in March 2020. Its purposes are to promote equality and diversity and human rights.
The test of charity status is set out in law. A charity is an organisation with exclusively charitable purposes for the public benefit, that is subject to the jurisdiction of the High Court of England and Wales. If it meets these legal tests, it will be entered on the charity register.
It is not the Commission’s role to make value judgements about the aims or ideas put forward by any organisation. Instead, its role is to decide whether an organisation’s purposes fall within the legal definition of charity.
The Commission received a number of objections to the registration of LGBA as a charity. It carefully considered these as part of making its decision. In handling this application, the Commission has had regard to the Public Sector Equality Duty.
Registered charities fall under the Commission’s regulation, and their trustees must continuously meet the legal duties and responsibilities set down under charity law. A charity can promote the rights of one or more specific groups, but may not do so whilst demeaning or denigrating the rights of others, including on social media – and the Commission will consider taking regulatory action where that occurs.
The full decision, explaining the grounds for registering the organisation and the objections that were considered, can be found on GOV.UKK_"

This seems a good place to publicise that LGBA actually have an webinar on tomorrow evening:

Ahead of elections in Scotland, Wales, London and others parts of England on May 6th, we take a look at the issues most relevant to lesbians, gay men and bisexuals, and the questions you might want to put to candidates.

So, the LGBA are now a registered charity.

How wonderful 👏

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/04/2021 21:33

I will walk away from this distraction and continue planning the submission that Trans Widows Voices has been asked to make by the UK parliament's Women and Equalities Select Committee.

You rock Tinsel Thanks

CatChant · 20/04/2021 21:34

Congratulations to the LGB Alliance. Achieving charitable status is no mean feat. I hope everyone who worked for it is feeling very proud today.

WarOnWomen · 20/04/2021 21:34

Well done, LGBA. Excellent news.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/04/2021 21:37

If you use the same reasoning by which people arrive at “lgb alliance are anti abortion”, and apply it to this thread, given that a trans ally wished death on us all earlier in the thread, you’d then have to conclude that wishing slow and lingering deaths on Mumsnet users is a key belief of trans allies here.

Should we do that?

No! I’d course we shouldn’t! Use your critical thinking skills, and accept that people are allowed to dissent.

Quite.

Its the way that evidence translates to ‘someone said so on twitter’

Yes again I'm very pleased that this charity to advocate for homosexual and bisexual people has had its charity status approved.

Congrats LGBA. Your work is much needed.

Kotatsu · 20/04/2021 21:45

You're absolutely correct, I was deliberately getting it wrong as a reference to the IT Crowd grin

Christ - I've turned into one of those people haven't I!

on the bright side, I will have to re-watch the IT Crowd (and thus subject my kids to it.. much like red dwarf.. although the holoship episode caused much woe and accusing looks!)

@ASugarr

https://twitter.com/GcHomophobia/status/1330813550156189696?s=19 Here's a bunch of information on their previous statements. Let's also not forget they are anti-abortion, pro-conversion therapy, Biphobic, the people involved are all connected to anti-LGB religious groups and so much more.
OK so I've looked at your thread. A lot of stuff about Malcolm Clark, a gay man who attended LGBT clubs at school and as a result thinks they are not a good idea due to safeguarding issues. You may not agree with his stance, but it isn't homophobic. It's up to you to make the case for why we should have them, not smear someone who went to them.

Alison Bailey objecting to the Pride train pumping out Pride related messages and literature. I recall a gay man at the time saying he thought the whole idea was appalling - he just wanted to get from A to B with minimum fuss just like everyone else and the train was not the place for forcing passengers to listen to messages about gay acceptance whether they wanted to or not.

Alison Bailey saying that a 12 year old is a child and should not be put in with adults and labelled LGBTQ+, but be allowed to grow up without adult agendas. Speaking as a parent, you're absolutely right Alison.

LGB Alliance USA saying that they don't represent asexuals because not wanting sex, a perfectly legitimate option, but it isn't a sexual orientation, which it isn't.

Alison Bailey being called a homophobe for saying in a tweet that she doesn't condone racist or homophobic behaviour, she abhors it. 'GC Homophobia' is certainly imaginative.

Well - you've got the gist. The bottom line is calling people who disagree with you 'transphobic' 'homophobic' etc is not a substitute for a proper argument.

GertrudeKerfuffle · 20/04/2021 21:53

Just adding my voice to say great news.

And good luck to you Tinsel Angel Thanks

Igmum · 20/04/2021 21:53

Excellent news. A sane and balanced judgement. Thank you to the British Court system.

Shall we try turning this thread off and on again?

As a parent to a couple of decidedly un-boy-ish boys (in entirely different ways to each other), but whom I reasonably given the stats expect are straight, I stillI applaud both LGBA and the TransWidows, because everyone is allowed to live and experience their truth (apparently) - even women, even little boys who love pick or who suck at sports.

That's the FWR I support - freedom to live.

That train sounded like an utter nightmare. And given the way lesbians get treated at Pride & the implications of the rainbow flag nowadays, if I’d been due to catch it I’d have waited for the next one.

Was there an actual train with political messages being broadcast through their onboard speakers??

LGBAlliance are a charity for people who are same- sex attracted.

Stonewall, on the other hand, are now a charity for people who are same- gender attracted.

Sex is not the same as gender.

Can't really understand why Stonewall et al are making such a fuss - surely they have totally different USPs?!

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 20/04/2021 22:27

Reading through some of the quoted/linked Twitter threads reminds me of a recent MN discussion:

I love to phone up donkey sanctuaries and scream: "WHAT ABOUT THE SQUIRRELS?" (I could start my own squirrel charity, but hey... ).

That's a great point. There's no reason why both organisations can't co-exist in peace.

I'm so happy about this news. Really glad that LGB Alliance is going to be able to continue its work and access funding too.

I'll also say that the CC report was interesting. They said that they felt LGBA had sometimes been too confrontational on social media and that needed to change. I thought it was good that they said that and shows that its really positive all round that a young organisation has now got the responsibility of charitable status.
