LGB Alliance is now a registered charity

It took over a year...

"LGBA applied to register as a charity in March 2020. Its purposes are to promote equality and diversity and human rights.
The test of charity status is set out in law. A charity is an organisation with exclusively charitable purposes for the public benefit, that is subject to the jurisdiction of the High Court of England and Wales. If it meets these legal tests, it will be entered on the charity register.
It is not the Commission’s role to make value judgements about the aims or ideas put forward by any organisation. Instead, its role is to decide whether an organisation’s purposes fall within the legal definition of charity.
The Commission received a number of objections to the registration of LGBA as a charity. It carefully considered these as part of making its decision. In handling this application, the Commission has had regard to the Public Sector Equality Duty.
Registered charities fall under the Commission’s regulation, and their trustees must continuously meet the legal duties and responsibilities set down under charity law. A charity can promote the rights of one or more specific groups, but may not do so whilst demeaning or denigrating the rights of others, including on social media – and the Commission will consider taking regulatory action where that occurs.
The full decision, explaining the grounds for registering the organisation and the objections that were considered, can be found on GOV.UKK_"

You do come across as a bit of a chump, ASugarr. I’m not sure whether you mean to.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 20/04/2021 21:04

@NiceGerbil

Good news.

The charities commission thing is interesting- when they act etc. I don't know what the process is.

But something I do know is

Girl guides have an exemption around equality and access etc to allow them to be single sex. Their charitable charter is based on supporting girls etc.

They have been around for an awfully long time.

They then said that they were a single gender org and more than that, always had been so.

'In 1909, a group of girls appeared at a Boy Scout Rally in the UK declaring themselves to be Girl Scouts. Lord Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of Boy Scouts, decided that there should be a Movement for girls.

Guiding was introduced that same year to respond to the specific needs of girls and young women. '

So in 1909, when this happened, when they said girls and young women, they meant young people who were male or female but had an internal gender ID of girl?

Seriously???!!!???

Its gaslighting on a massive scale

Okay that's your opinion. I'm just here speaking about my views around this subject matter.
yourhairiswinterfire · 20/04/2021 21:05

Cool. You can think its fine. I personally don't and want twitter to monitor the content as some of it is very triggering.

They're women, plenty who got out of abusive relationships, supporting each other. Why on Earth do they need ''monitoring''? Hmm

NiceGerbil · 20/04/2021 21:06

Am I right in thinking that

Earlier in the thread a now deleted post said women on MN / on these threads should die (from the replies I think that's correct)

And the charity guy (I think it was) said that mumsnetters have an attack strategy of issuing death threats to people they disagree with (!!!!!!!!)

And yet the conversation has turned as it has, to the name of a different long running support thread, even though that has nothing to do with the topic at hand?

OnandOnforHoursandHours · 20/04/2021 21:07

Some people have crap husbands and need to vent. Why is that ‘triggering’, at least to anyone not stuck in such a relationship?

R0wantrees · 20/04/2021 21:07

What was he thinking, that charity bloke? And going to the press? I mean FGS.

Some men can't handle any door being closed to them is the problem.

It was an obvious attempt to try to use Twitter to try to shame a women's breast screening clinic who said no to his unreasonable demands.

ListeningQuietly · 20/04/2021 21:07

As I said up thread, I chew the fat with the Charity commission regularly.
They have my phone number because I'm a serial pedant.
Any wazzock who thinks they will challenge this registration
does not understand charity law

well done to LGBA on providing the COPIOUS amounts of information they will have been asked for

Well I must admit. If that is true then that is terrible. No one should say things like that.
LastRoloIsMine · 20/04/2021 21:07

I wonder if other groups might be inspired by this to consider applying for charitable status, I do hope so.

I think LGBA are showing there is room for everyone to connect with their chosen group and that ok. It is allowed.

NiceGerbil · 20/04/2021 21:08

And I think I've just read that

The content of those looking running threads needs to be deleted or whatever is being called for

Because there is a person/ people who are 'monitoring' the content and they find some of it upsetting??!!???

Seriously?

OnandOnforHoursandHours · 20/04/2021 21:08

Oh good grief.

ASugarr, are you trying to make out that the golf widows, the trans widows and the cycling widows are all issuing death threats?

Please dial down the drama.

I don't know about your past but as someone who has been told to die. Be better of dead. To be almost killed numerous times. I don't consider death something to make a false claim about.
Leafstamp · 20/04/2021 21:09

[quote RabbitOfCaerbannog]Little recap - the LGB Alliance have been granted charity status which is wonderful. Well done Alison & Kate et al. In order for this to happen the Charity Commission would have to do due diligence, scrutinising them extremely closely- including looking at their funding - so I think we can conclude that the smears they've been subject to are just that and have no basis in fact. For anyone who wants to read about their mission, you can find the details here...

Time to say thank you again to Rabbit - a much appreciated recap.

That’s good to know, listening Smile

I love how you can be guaranteed that no matter the topic, someone here will have relevant knowledge.

TheFirstMrsDV · 20/04/2021 21:10

Cool. You can have your opinion. If these 'widows' can call their ex partner dead then I'll be sure to talk about my mother and others I dislike as dead. Since it doesn't matter.

Knock yourself out. No one cares.
I can guarantee no strangers will demand you stop doing it because its triggering.

NiceGerbil · 20/04/2021 21:10

You couldn't make it up.

If the fact is that those threads are hateful etc then why would they need monitoring? The content would speak for itself to anyone who read it!

It would be like me finding a space where the most worrying incels hang out and reading it all. Why would i do that? It doesnt make sense.

Helleofabore · 20/04/2021 21:10

They're women, plenty who got out of abusive relationships, supporting each other. Why on Earth do they need ''monitoring''? hmm

For wrong think of course!

For not being kind at all times!

For standing up for themselves and their children.

For saying ‘no’!

The list is endless but this is a start.

Scepticaltank · 20/04/2021 21:11

Good question for ASugarr there.

What is it you are expecting to be able to do to women who are victims of abusive relationships?

It would be great to get your explanation of what you want done to them and why?

We know you don't like the coloquial use of the word widow but only when abused women use it, but are not too bothered when golf, cycling or running widows use it?

What else do you object to?

Another post worth repeating. I have no doubt that the CC will have been all over the evidence and have therefore made the right call here.

Apologies for the derail NiceGerbil, you are quite right.

Its been a trying couple of days.

I will walk away from this distraction and continue planning the submission that Trans Widows Voices has been asked to make by the UK parliament's Women and Equalities Select Committee.

As someone who has to regularly help people in those circumstances there are plenty of places to turn to. I understand it is hard however I'm still entitled to feel uncomfortable over the fact people consider transgender people before they transition dead.

Like, calling their old names "deadnames" and so on?
