Laurence Fox answers Women’s Place UK questions

As a candidate for London mayor Laurence Fox has answered five questions on women's rights and it is a breath of fresh air. Highlights being:

First of all, the police cannot protect what it does not define. We acknowledge that women are adult human females. They are vulnerable as a result of biological sex.

Acknowledge that The Equality Act 2010 provides legislative protection for women by virtue of their sex. We will enforce it without fear or favour and protect the rights of women to single sex spaces.

Ring fence funding for single-sex refuges and support services

Lets hope this puts pressure on the other candidates

He works with Don't Divide Us so to dismiss him as racist is simplistic. Not agreeing with that woman on Question Time does not make him racist. You might not agree with the Don't Divide Us approach but him supporting Calvin Robinson and Don't Divide Us does not make him racist in and of itself.

I feel like we have a few posters saying he's dreadful but with no explanation.

I was so relieved when Don't Divide Us was set up.

LizzieSiddal · 19/03/2021 20:58

Why do we need to provide an “explanation”?

FightingTheFoo · 19/03/2021 20:58

I thought LF was being unfairly maligned until I read his interview with Camilla Long last year. Unfortunately I agree he is no friend to women (see screenshot below) and while he does probably believe what he's spouting I think he's partly doing it for attention. There are better allies to women we can look to.

It would just help because this thread is making me worry I've missed something vital that I can't start to research because I don't know what it is.

I'm not demanding, just politely asking, but I see this thread is going nowhere so I'll go and watch TV now. I'm restricting my MN time to keep sane!

Highwind · 19/03/2021 21:02

I think politicians need a sharp shock for them to understand that erasing and selling out women is no vote winner. I can think of no better way than LF snapping up Mayor of London.

It's a protest vote and I hope he wins just to wake up the rest of the political parties.... but he won't.

Velouria · 19/03/2021 21:03

What has he done? I remember a furore, but took no notice.

Imnobody4 · 19/03/2021 21:05

For heavens sake he's not going to win, however if he gives Sian Berry a run for her money I'm cool. He could be effective in exposing the mealy mouthed hypocrisy of the other candidates on women's rights and freedom of speech.
Personally I think none of the candidates are electable. Sadiq Khan has been a real disappointment but maybe Shaun Bailey will be persuaded to take a different stance to TWAW.
Do they have a debate?

PaleBlueMoonlight · 19/03/2021 21:07

So is question time thing the basis of the accusation of him being racist?

Velouria · 19/03/2021 21:12

I suppose I'll watch his trigerrnometry interview, despite finding them quite annoying.

zoemum2006 · 19/03/2021 21:19

Laurence Fox? LOL

Mayoral candidate LOL...

what an attention seeking little twat.

I can't bear that there's this market for people to say obnoxious stuff because controversy and offensiveness sells.

GNCQ · 19/03/2021 21:23

It's almost like D. trump trying to win president of America....

GNCQ · 19/03/2021 21:24

Capital T obviously.

GNCQ · 19/03/2021 21:27

^
Oh great now I'm paranoid. I'm not trying to cryptically say I support DT.
Quite the opposite. Just it isn't unfeasible that these people get into power.

loveyouradvice · 19/03/2021 21:27

There are lots of insults on here ... not very helpful (and rather reminiscent of other tactics)....

And almost no discussion about whether we think this will have any impact or what its implications are.... I'm hoping it will put it on the agenda for discussion and questions more widely.... Wait to see

EdgeOfACoin · 19/03/2021 21:34

Lots of accusations being thrown around. Very little evidence provided.

I agree that LF is a contrarian, but I don't think he wants to kill all Jews or round up people into concentration camps (which is what calling him a Nazi or far right fascist implies).

"not very helpful (and rather reminiscent of other tactics)...."

Absolutely.

"I'm hoping it will put it on the agenda for discussion and questions more widely"

Me too - I just want some light shone on it all

I was pleasantly surprised by some of his policies in that link - not the GC stuff, the other ones.

Doesn't mean I'll definitely vote for him. Means I will dig a bit deeper into his policies.

None of the other choices appeal at all. I was disappointed when Rory Stewart dropped out.

AdHominemNonSequitur · 19/03/2021 21:43

@Velouria

Well he is a massive lock down conspiracy theorist so I find it hard to respect him on that basis. As others have said he is a bit of a professional cynic and courts controversy for fame (a bit like a male Katie Hopkins but not quite as bad). A professional controversy stoker. He is very anti CRT. He was shot down on question time by a black woman on the basis of his white male privilege and defended himself rigourously on the basis of every one has a stake in society and should have a voice (which I supported him for, I'm.a universalist too). I remember he once said he doesn't date women under 30 they are all too woke. He is basically an extreme un pc libertarian. Not evil. Not alt right. Bit of a dick. Refreshingly unfettered. Far far less dangerous than the magisterium.
Cwenthryth · 19/03/2021 21:44

I wish Rory Stewart was still standing. Bloody Covid stopped that. Would be very interested to hear how he would answer these questions!

I will not vote for Laurence Fox, I think he’d be a distaster for London. However, he has given sensible answers to these questions - and by answering first, now he’s tempting out the others to answer. It’s all sunlight. The London mayoral race is not really a major concern in the grand scheme of fighting for woman’s sex-based rights, but it’s all sunlight - once the TWAW ‘believers’ attempt to explain their ideas out loud to the general public, then they tend to quickly come unstuck - see Jo Swinson. So in that respect, he has done ‘us’ a favour by doing this.

But I think we really, really need to stop seeing everything as ‘sides’ - and two posters have mentioned ‘anti-trans’ - FFS it is not inherently ‘anti-trans’ to fight for women’s sex-based rights, please don’t fall into that trap laid by TRAs. We can and should (I’m sure all regular posters do) still support trans people having full rights the same as all other people, freedom from harrassment and hate crime etc.... just not the additional special rights being demanded that conflict with other people’s sex-based rights! It is not about ‘sides’ and left v right, pro v anti.... it is about fighting for a way forward for everyone, encompassing women’s sex-based rights. We all have to live together at the end of the day.

PotholeHellhole · 19/03/2021 21:56

I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him.

He speaks and acts just like any of the tedious pseudo-intellectual middle/upper-class wankers of my own age group who pontificate on how TWAW. He's too old to join in with them, so he's reacting against them to get the likes from his age group.

I listened to his interview with James Delingpole and he's not someone to put in charge of London or anything else.

I agree with this.

I happen to agree with him on one key issue but it doesn't make him fit for office.

And oh lord, his twitter.

He went off on one at Argos when they announced they were going to audit average salaries to check if they were institutionally underpaying black employees. Accused them of racism and tried to sic his followers on them for taking steps to identify racism and fix it.

He literally called a business racist for announcing they were going to investigate if they'd been racist!

PotholeHellhole · 19/03/2021 22:04

Then there is the way he always uses his mixed race nephews and nieces as a shield when someone accuses him of racism. Sometimes the way he talks about them sounds like Great Replacement theory.

Something tells me that Billie would have something to say if she saw him ever being touted as a feminist icon.
