ChristinaXYZ · 19/03/2021 19:04

As a candidate for London mayor Laurence Fox has answered five questions on women's rights and it is a breath of fresh air. Highlights being:

First of all, the police cannot protect what it does not define. We acknowledge that women are adult human females. They are vulnerable as a result of biological sex.

Acknowledge that The Equality Act 2010 provides legislative protection for women by virtue of their sex. We will enforce it without fear or favour and protect the rights of women to single sex spaces.

Ring fence funding for single-sex refuges and support services

Lets hope this puts pressure on the other candidates

Even a broken clock is right twice a day Smile
Was literally about to say this! 😆

I must admit I knew nothing much about the London Mayor thing as I live in the North.
Here's a list of candidates.

Doesn't look like LF is the absolute worst option. I'd rather vote for the man with a bucket on his head though (irrelevant really as I'm not in London).

Wow that is a lot of candidates!

Ohforarainyday · 20/03/2021 13:06

Laurence Fox is an abuser who mocked and outed a woman who'd accused him of sexual harassment, is everyone just forgetting that?

Mumofgirlswholiketoplaywithmud · 20/03/2021 13:12
Khan can't answer the question
Why can't he just answer the questions and own his opinion?! It's coming across as really evasive and suspect on his part. Then the whole committee state that the questions can't even be asked. I am so gutted that labour have lost their critical thinking skills (and wish I hadn't given so much money in membership fees towards them over the years)

I don't know about it

People just keep saying odd things, if they don't state it then how am I going to know?!

Google brings nothing.

Ohforarainyday · 20/03/2021 13:17

The problem with identity politics is that it's created a binary divide (woke vs anti-woke) where all nuance has been lost. This is a problem when each side clearly has the moral high ground on some issues, but not the other - people who are put all their identity into 'their side' refuse to accept or acknowledge the areas where their side is engaging in dangerous or abusive behaviour.

So you have women's rights activists doing good work to support the rights of women, or to promote anti-racism, not acknowledging how TRA can harm women.

On the other hand, you see people making perfectly neutral and obviously good statements like "racism is bad" and being attacked with sneering comments like "ugh look at the wokester I bet she doesn't know what a woman is!"

Why are "anti-wokesters" so desperate to force trans issues into completely unrelated debates, like debates about racism? Either they are deeply naive and have tunnel vision and don't see how the whole "anti-woke" ideology has been co-opted to promote racism, or they are actually racist themselves and are abusing women's rights as a cover to promote racism.

I really couldn't give a shit about what seems to be a largely ceremonial position which gave us Boris on a zipwire as a memorable contribution to the job.

Of course it's not ceremonial. Try telling the thousands of working class women, or even homeless women, disabled women, women who are unpaid carers, whose lives have been drastically affected by decisions the mayor has made over the years that you don't give a shit just because they don't live in your area.

Ohforarainyday · 20/03/2021 13:20

I mean, it's not hard to do research. All these things have been discussed at length in numerous previous threads here. It's not unrealistic to assume that someone choosing to actively engage in a debate about a high profile celebrity who's been all over the news and all over Mumsnet would have at least a passing knowledge of what he's actually done and said, or at least what's frequently discussed about him on this very forum.

I see Sian Berry is running. In case it saves anyone time

She won't answer your email if it mentions overpopulation, destruction of green space etc.

NiceGerbil · 20/03/2021 13:27

Hmm well at least Sadiq said you're conflating sex and gender.

He said trans people should be supported. He didn't say they were female. Quite otherwise.

He should have been asked as a follow up about prisons or similar.

Interesting that two women got it shut down. FFS.

I find it interesting that when he started talking about changes to language everyone jumped in to save him. They did it because they know how it sounds when it's put out there and they knew he was totally stuck.

NiceGerbil · 20/03/2021 13:33

Oh thanks for the list!

Agree shouldn't be dismissed as ceremonial. Huge amounts of money and power. Nearly 10 million people. Loads of poverty, violent crime etc. Tons of issues. Public transport- so vital and now the Tories have got their fingers into tfl because of Corona I'm worried.

Anyway.

Going to read about some of the independents.

For those who mentioned protest vote the binhead is the obvious way forward! I'll look at the independents and if not then I just admit binhead is looking pretty appealing. I haven't read what his plans for London are yet though I admit.

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 20/03/2021 13:33

In ten days time we will find out if he has got enough signatures for his nomination.

Agree about the broken clock analogy.

Ohforarainyday · 20/03/2021 13:34

Google brings nothing.

It does for me.

Laurence Fox, Sunday Times interview 26th April 2020.

Fox decided to tell the Times journalist that the makeup artist on 'Victoria' had made a formal complaint of sexual harassment against him (you can read details of the sexual harassment complaint online) and that her letter of complaint sent to the production had been passed to him.

Fox not only told the journalist this, but actually brought the letter along to the interview, and did a 'dramatic monologue reading' of the complaint letter, in order to take the piss out of it.

The poor makeup artist made a complaint privately to her boss. Fox outed her in a national newspaper, read her private complaint letter to a journalist, and used it to mock her.

He's made plenty of comments in interviews showing that he treated Billie Piper like crap and engaged in behaviour many people would consider emotional abuse. The quote about trying to "wind the fuck out of her" for instance.

These are his answers:

In 2019, Women’s Place UK published 5 questions for prospective parliamentary candidates. Very few have publicly answered. We are Reclaiming the right for women’s voices to be heard and demanding that our police forces listen.

 1. Do you agree that women have the right to organise and speak freely?

Yes. Shocking numbers of women have been sacked, de-platformed and cancelled for voicing an opinion. The police must operate without fear or favour, dealing robustly with any protest that seeks to limit women’s freedom to organise, gather and speak freely.

 1. What steps will you take to make sure the law and criminal justice system works for women?

First of all, the police cannot protect what it does not define. We acknowledge that women are adult human females. They are vulnerable as a result of biological sex.
Commission a Macpherson style report to address policing in relation to women.
Set up an independent body to investigate police officers suspected of domestic violence and violence against women and girls.
Increase police presence across the transport networks
We will consider legislation to make street harassment a crime (as it is in France)
And funding to improve street lighting – councils can apply for grants (as long as their offices / services meet the single-sex provisions of the Equality Act)

 1. What action will you take to end violence against women and girls?

Acknowledge that The Equality Act 2010 provides legislative protection for women by virtue of their sex. We will enforce it without fear or favour and protect the rights of women to single sex spaces.
Ring fence funding for single-sex refuges and support services
Conduct public awareness / safety campaigns targeted at men to highlight changes they can make to help women feel safer.
Fund programmes which support men to challenge other men’s behaviour / support men to change their own behaviour

 1. How will you make sure that diverse voices of women are heard in policy-making decisions?

Create a cross-party committee of women to consult on all policy-making decisions
Develop consultation mechanisms so the public can comment on proposed policy changes

 1. Do you commit to upholding women’s sex-based rights as outlined in the Equality Act and, if necessary, strengthening them?

Absolutely. All organisations who receive any funding from City Hall will need to demonstrate their services and operations are delivered in-line with women’s sex-based rights as outlined in the Equality Act.

I don't know why it would be so hard for the other parties to make the same statements

NiceGerbil · 20/03/2021 13:50

Binface policies not as funny as I hoped. The sensible one are boring as well.

Shame.

Screaming lord sutch had some good ideas .

EndoplasmicReticulum · 20/03/2021 13:53

There's a great example of nominative determinism in the candidates list, anyway.

PotholeHellhole · 20/03/2021 16:45

Hibari

Ten is a lot for how much of a racist wanker he is.

Good thing it wasn't as many as ten, then.

I've lived in England for 25 years.

I just pay more attention to global happenings, I guess?

Gosh. I'll have to hit you up some time to ask you about this year's Bundestagswahl. I really struggle to keep track of the political goings on in Germany, as well as within the UK.

ScoldsBible · 20/03/2021 17:02

Personally I find him objectionable and I was sick of the sight of his crotch on Celebrity Gogglebox. I might agree with his views on some subjects but he would be an embarrassment as mayor of London. I don’t think it’s going to happen though is it?

SmokedDuck · 20/03/2021 17:29

Either they are deeply naive and have tunnel vision and don't see how the whole "anti-woke" ideology has been co-opted to promote racism, or they are actually racist themselves and are abusing women's rights as a cover to promote racism.

The issue is not racism per se, but the fact that at this time, issues around racism are looked at, by the enforcers of orthodoxy, through the exact same lens as gender issues - critical theory. Lots of people who detest or are suspicious of CT will be unhappy with how race is being talked about or treated in policy discussions - many feel that CT is itself deeply racist. Some people have, unfortunately, become so disgusted that they turn off at the mention of any of it.

OhHolyJesus · 20/03/2021 18:01

Hmm well at least Sadiq said you're conflating sex and gender.

But he didn't answer the question and 'un-conflate' them, nor did he say why the question was conflating them (it wasn't).

Not aimed at you NiceGerbil but I do wish people would say gender identity and not 'gender' as the very word in its own conflates it with sex.

The question by Kurten wasn't conflating the two terms at all, he was asking Khan what he meant! So frustrating. More so since he was prevented from asking more questions and referred to with such vitriol from Khan.

Erkrie · 20/03/2021 18:06

Hmm well at least Sadiq said you're conflating sex and gender.

Yet still can't explain what a woman is.

JanewaysBun · 20/03/2021 18:17

Apart from LF who of the others is GC/understands biology?

I hope bucket head man is GC, I want to vote for him 🤣. Do buckets have sexes?

Erkrie · 20/03/2021 18:27

Do buckets have sexes?

In today's world, anything is a possibility. Wink

PotholeHellhole · 20/03/2021 18:31

Well, where do baby buckets come from?
