for fucks fucking sake!

"Peters’ longlisting comes after organisers clarified in 2020 that it was open to any “cis woman, a transgender woman or anyone who is legally defined as a woman or of the female sex”. “It’s a prize for women, and trans women are women, so …” said chair of judges and author Bernardine Evaristo."

I continue to be embarrassed by the successful supposedly clever women who continue to throw other women under the bus

Why not transmen?

Mn753 · 10/03/2021 19:13

I wonder who was 17th on the list? Do you think we could find out?

Don't these people have any self-respect?

ASmallMovie · 10/03/2021 19:18

Hopefully she'll win. And hopefully next year the entire list will be TW.

And then finally the folk who don't think there's an issue with self ID/TWAW ideology will wake the fuck up.

Puzzledtenant · 10/03/2021 19:19

So based on that "of the female sex", a transman could win the women's prize and the men's prize (if there is/was one)? A transman and a transwoman could both be competing for the women's prize? How does that work????

BitMuch · 10/03/2021 19:28

Torrey Peter's previous book, The Masker, has the blurb:
'After a party on the Las Vegas Strip, a young sissy must choose between her internet fantasy of forced feminization at the hands of a mysterious handsome man, or the difficult reality of transition with the help of a sisterly transsexual woman.'

Described as 'a dark new Novella about online sissy culture, forced-femme erotica, female-masking, internalized transmisogyny, and crossdressing.'

The contenders for the Women's Prize for Fiction was just discussed on Radio 4 Front Row. It was made clear that Torrey Peters is a transwoman and Peters' book Detransition, Baby was described as a strong contender.

RozWatching · 10/03/2021 19:36

internet fantasy of forced feminization

Really?
Who is the sponsor?

PurBal · 10/03/2021 19:37

They'd be better off scrapping the gendered prizes.

PotholeParadies · 10/03/2021 19:38

Screenshots from Detransition, Baby were floating around twitter a few months back. I had no idea it was supposed to be Women's Prize level of fiction. I rather assumed it was the equivalent of the "Having my Werewolf Lover's Baby" (of which rot there is plenty on kindle) genre, except concerning trans life. I thought the people sharing screenshots were over-reacting, tbh. If there is a market for dinosaur erotica, why shouldn't trans authors write for trans readers, I said.

But now I may be a tad alarmed.

Well this almost sounds like... but never mind.

Why not transmen?

Ah... we all know why - same reason the woman who was 17th on the list doesn’t count.

Funny how there are so many ways to work out the binary of adults.

I really want to know who would have been on that liat if Peters wasn't eligible.

NotTerfNorCis · 10/03/2021 19:56

That prize exists because women face prejudice in the publishing world.

The question is whether Peters would have faced sexism as a transwoman.

Even if so, it's still a dubious move.

Impatiens · 10/03/2021 20:06

This is a UK prize? Is Peters 'legally defined' as a Woman according to UK law?

ChaosTrulyReigns · 10/03/2021 20:10

The Women's Prize was established in response to the Booker failing to shortlist a single female writer in 1991.

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 10/03/2021 20:10

Nothing to do with identifying with stereotypes of the submissive, inferior sex then, not at all. Move along.

PotholeParadies · 10/03/2021 20:10

Judges will now narrow the selection to a shortlist of six books, to be announced on 28 April.

The winner of this year’s award will be revealed on 7 July during an awards ceremony in London. She will receive a £30,000 ($41,000) cheque and a limited edition bronze figurine.

That's a lot of money, on top of the increased sales that come with being nominated for the prize.

Right. Wild idea here, but how about someone creates a new prize for trans writers and endows it with £30,000 prize-money? Stonewall could sponsor it!

Clymene · 10/03/2021 20:10

What does this have to do with women? Also it sounds shit.

I would be very interested to know what the merits of Peter's latest novel are, other than Evaristo being tediously in thrall to TWAW

Twistiesandshout · 10/03/2021 20:12

I know, it is terribly unfair. It reminds me of the winner of womens cricket player of the year a couple of years ago; www.kentonline.co.uk/dover/news/dont-speak-for-me-or-my-ovaries-215668/
:(

BoeotianNightmare · 10/03/2021 20:15

This is incredibly disappointing in a prize that was set up to address the lack of women being critically acclaimed, after the Booker short list of 1991 contained no women.

Biscuitsanddoombar · 10/03/2021 20:16

The hypocrisy is breath taking. A woman has missed out so you could flash you’re woke credentials by including someone male. How date you talk about women being silenced
