for fucks fucking sake!

"Peters’ longlisting comes after organisers clarified in 2020 that it was open to any “cis woman, a transgender woman or anyone who is legally defined as a woman or of the female sex”. “It’s a prize for women, and trans women are women, so …” said chair of judges and author Bernardine Evaristo."

@PotholeParadies

OnlyTeaForMe did many of them predict Mermaid of Black Conch?
Yes! 4/4 of the 'experts' predicted it! Is that one that's rumoured to have been bumped for the Peters one?

Well, not rumoured outside of me saying it, iyswim.

I went trawling through literary twitter for ten minutes, and that was the book that kept coming up as a "I'm surprised it's not there".

So I'm extrapolating here. But...

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 10/03/2021 22:19

It is just as well I have no aspirations to be a famous author.

Right now, I am only capable of writing ‘ffs’ which might be a bit of a hurdle if I got paid by the word or indeed by the letter.

If I were allowed to rant, then it would also be a problem as no one would be able to lift my book.

OnlyTeaForMe · 10/03/2021 22:22

Now there isn't a single over-arching sponsor presumably they think they can go full-on woke.
Just like the Booker, they simply don't seem to know who buys their books!

Just need JKR to come along and start the Biological Women's Prize for Fiction. . .

Lushers · 10/03/2021 22:28

This makes my blood boil. I loved Girl, Woman, other too, and I feel bad that I did.

A lot of you say it far more eloquently than I ever could do I just read and agree with you all. What is the world coming to, when this is happening to women. We are going backwards in terms of feminism due to the Trans lobby and trans ideology. It's wrong. Period.

Lushers · 10/03/2021 22:30

I love your suggestion for JKR to start her own Biological women prize ... Grin

loveyouradvice · 10/03/2021 22:32

um.... from the description it sounds really badly written .... I would be amazed if it made the shortlist, let alone won

No - I don't think it should be on the long list but I hope it will just vanish....

NoSquirrels · 10/03/2021 22:35

Interesting. Of 16 books, I haven’t registered on my radar 4 of them, of which Detransition, Baby is definitely one (because I’d have been intrigued if I’d seen it reviewed & looked into it). I have registered Mermaid of Black Conch, however. So does feel quite deliberate, especially after the Women’s Prize was under scrutiny for this very issue recently. Dawn French is a bit of a weird one too - feels very popularist and a political choice.

That's a really good idea. Perhaps she could involve The Baroness?
Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/03/2021 22:44

I hate the term, but I wonder what would be the outcome if someone tried to set something up just for "cis" women. I feel sure it wouldn't be allowed to proceed.

CharlieParley · 10/03/2021 22:45
**@Delphinium20* and @notyourhandmaid*

Yeah I get that, but that was then and this is now. Is it not time to move on? At what point would you be happy to merge?
When women receive the same opportunities in publishing. The marketing budget for women is smaller, female authors continue to be dismissed or considered irrelevant (what can women have to say, really). Prejudice against female writers continues to be so strong that many will write under a pseudonym that doesn't give their sex away.

When we have parity, we can do away with scholarships, prizes and awards for women. Until then they are necessary to allow at least some female authors to be recognised.

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 10/03/2021 22:46

Oh it might be allowed to proceed Ereshkigalangcleg

And we’d get to the count of five before they were identifying as that too.

After a party on the Las Vegas Strip, a young sissy must choose between her internet fantasy of forced feminization at the hands of a mysterious handsome man, or the difficult reality of transition with the help of a sisterly transsexual woman

Sounds like important literature that speaks of the universal human experience. Hmm

That reads like a bad Jackie Collins fanfic. And I don’t remember Jackie Collins herself ever being near prize lists like this
NiceGerbil · 10/03/2021 23:01

I think the conversation about are all women prizes/ shortlists etc a good thing or not is an interesting discussion. This thread is about an all women thing but I'd be interested in posting on a thread about all women stuff more generally.

I note that the article raises that there has been pressure to make this self id rather than legal sex.

About trans men- it's up to them whether they would want to enter or not. If it was bio sex. I'd assume not but it's neither here nor there really.

NiceGerbil · 10/03/2021 23:05

Interesting there's a detransitioner in the story nominated.

The books mentioned here all sound pretty focused on sex to me.

There could be a trans and non binary prize? I bet stonewall could afford to support it and it would get lots of support and backing. And visibility for more trans authors while leaving the space for women authors as well.

It's never as well as though is it.

Totallydefeated · 10/03/2021 23:17

There was always going to be at least one trans author on the list this year, regardless of the merits of their work. The panel will now be falling over themselves to justify making them the winner.

StellaAndCrow · 10/03/2021 23:58

I wonder how visible her previous books will remain?

They have one very positive review on Amazon for the book described above.

And their other book sounds very similar to TRA reddit fantasies of a trans-ruled future. They're all about the vengeance!

"In the future, everyone will be trans. So says Lexi. She’s a charismatic trans woman furious with the way she sees her trans friends treated by society and resentful of the girl who spurned her love. Now, Lexi has a plan to wreak her vengeance: a future in which no one can produce hormones and everyone must make the same choice that she made—what body best fits your gender?"

StellaAndCrow · 11/03/2021 00:02

You can download the first two of Peters' books from their website for free if you're interested.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/03/2021 00:02

Is this supposed to be grand literary fiction? It sounds like a self-published e-book.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/03/2021 00:03
