for fucks fucking sake!

"Peters’ longlisting comes after organisers clarified in 2020 that it was open to any “cis woman, a transgender woman or anyone who is legally defined as a woman or of the female sex”. “It’s a prize for women, and trans women are women, so …” said chair of judges and author Bernardine Evaristo."

Overthrowing the patriarchal narrative by including a male born person on the shortlist whose trans characters identify with female submission? Ah I get it, we were inferior all along, we just need to realise our place!

A recent interview with Torrey Peters: www.vulture.com/2021/01/torrey-peters-detransition-baby.html

She told no one about her secret life. “I didn’t know the word trans. I thought it was a sexual fetish.”

When she was in her mid-20s, her then-girlfriend — soon to be her wife — stumbled upon a cross-dressing website on her computer. “I wasn’t honest with her. I wanted people to think that was just another cool facet of my personality — like, This person travels, and also they wear heels! I was still spinning it.”

Bmidreams · 10/03/2021 20:27

I'm so fucking angry. All. The. Fucking. Time.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 10/03/2021 20:28

a dark new Novella about online sissy culture, forced-femme erotica, female-masking, internalized transmisogyny, and crossdressing

All subjects of great interest to women, then. Confused

Flapjak · 10/03/2021 20:29

So that makes a complete farce of the award if this person wins. The actual 16 female authors should withdraw from the award in solidarity of the 17th woman who missed out

Do I even want to know what "online sissy culture" is referring to?

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 10/03/2021 20:34

She met a wealthy tech guy on Facebook a while back who wanted to fly her out to Seattle for a long weekend. By the end of that visit, she had settled on a new vision of her future. “I wanted to be a trophy wife,” she recalled. “I wanted to take care of a man..."

This is what being a woman is? This is how parts of Peter's "psyche" are "female"? Because of "sundresses and heels". Way to show patriarchy Bernadine!

😢😢
I am so disappointed by this. I loved 'Girl, Woman, Other'. What a bloody let down.

WhiteDenim · 10/03/2021 20:40

They're doing it for the headlines. More noise = more sponsors.

And as Evaristo as the chair, it's not too surprising that this agenda is being pushed. I imagine she'd want it to be the Women's Prize...

BitMuch · 10/03/2021 20:43

Excerpt from an article written by a self described 'trans girl' reviewing Detransition, Baby:

'Another moment that is particularly insightful has to do with autogynephilia, sissy porn, and the meeting point of sexuality and gender. It reminded me of Andrea Long Chu’s book Females. Peters herself has discussed Chu’s essay “On Liking Women” in Harron Walker’s them profile. Autogynephilia is the idea that some trans women are only turned on by the idea of being a woman. That it is, in essence, a fetish. Ames is discussing the idea of autogynephilia, trans porn, and sissification when he comes to the conclusion that: “Of course women are turned on by being women and men turned on by being men! Watch any porn and the sexuality of everyone in it is actually about their own auto-andro/gyne-philia. Listen to them talk. It’s all about validating their own gender. Oh yeah, I’m your little slut…”'

Twitter discussion suggests surprise the Mermaid of Black Conch didn't make it into the list. Lots of raving about Detransition Baby, which just makes me think, well nominate it for the Booker then.

The book written by the transwoman has a scene where the transwoman character indulges in 'erotic impregnation' role play with a male partner. It also has a passage where the character muses that the risk of catching AIDS from their positive partner makes them feel more like a real woman, because it makes sex dangerous and have potential consequences. Real women, you see, have the risk of getting pregnant and dying and so it feels more 'authentic' for the trans character to also have that risk of dying from sex! Yay, just girl things.

SidSparrow · 10/03/2021 20:47

I don't agree with men being allowed into women's stuff, but I also don't agree with a women's book prize. Why is that separated from men? We can write just as well and therefore all be in the one category - no? Sports - ok I get that, but not stuff using the old noggin.

JSL52 · 10/03/2021 20:51

I'm really bloody annoyed, I usually read the shortlist. Not sure I'll bother again.

Because historically women have been left out of literature prizes and the bulk of awards have gone to men. Ideally women would win roughly 50 % of literature prizes, but because that didn't happen (sexism) women's prizes allowed recognition for well deserved accomplishments.

Mediocre men have been stealing from exceptional women since time immemorial.

Gosh if only there was some kind of epic historical prejudice that justified having a separate women's prize!
notyourhandmaid · 10/03/2021 20:55

Really disheartening to see a shortlist that doesn't prioritise women. But not surprising.

Because judges can't do blind reviewing of the books, i.e. review them without knowing who wrote them. And preconceptions affect what conclusions you reach.

Famously, lead violinists were almost all male. People said sorrowfully that female violinists just didn't have the talent.

Then, they introduced blind auditions, where violinist played the piece behind a curtain and the judges judged purely on the music they heard. Suddenly, female violinists started getting jobs.
