Why don't we centre women?

This is a feminism board but 99% of the threads are about trans people or gender identity.

What about domestic violence, FGM, the gender pay gap, period poverty, and representation in the workplace?

It seems like this board believes the only threat to women is trans people.

Am I missing something?

How about a Trans discussion board? Sick of it clogging up the board with the same shit every day.

1)Start your own thread/s.
2) Shore up women's rights against the current threat.
3) Buy a t shirt.
4) Have a cup of tea.

Not necessarily in that order.

KateF · 06/03/2021 19:54

I've never posted on this board before but read it regularly. It has helped me educate myself about feminism and the many issues facing women and girls in this country and globally. In turn I am better equipped to debate these issues with my daughters and the young women I work with and, as an older woman, to offer support.

I am a woman.
I have daughters.
I work in a sector dominated by women and very poorly paid.
I have experienced domestic abuse.

All these things matter and in order to discuss them meaningfully we need an agreement as to what a woman is.

PS I bought the t-shirt!

PotholeParadies · 06/03/2021 20:40

13! That's a baker's dozen!

Thank you, all of you, for making this such an inspiring thread, centring some of the most marginalised women in the world.

@Buzzinwithbez, hi-five!

I appreciate the annoyance. I feel it too. Here are some threads that have nothing to do with trans stuff. Flowers

Those that have bought the t-shirt what size is the large?! I could get a tape measure out, but I’m living in denial.

Super lazy of me, I know, but it follows a pattern of why I’m living in denial Grin

I’m v happy to see they will ship to Oz 💪

PotholeParadies · 07/03/2021 02:11

I get the impression they're all going to get sent out at once at the conclusion of the campaign, so I don't suppose anyone knows.

These are the measurements of doom.

Why don't we centre women?
ItsLateHumpty · 07/03/2021 02:27

Thanks PotholeParadies and OP; this thread turned out better than expected.

I will order a L which now stands for Little, because I said so Wink

PotholeParadies · 07/03/2021 02:33

And you've set us free of 13, unlucky for some!

Don't use the L-word, though. Grin I can't see it yet without thinking of a particular web-comic

ItsLateHumpty · 07/03/2021 02:34

For anyone Oz side it cost just over £26 including shipping to Oz, which is pretty damn good.

I'm horrified by some of what I've learned via The Observers's campaign against femicide - I'd no idea older women weren't counted in the crime stats until 3 years ago and even now the revised threshold will plainly miss some notorious crimes:

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 07/03/2021 12:16

Late 20th century feminism was making some (albeit not enough) progress toward something resembling equality, even though attitudes to women still had a long way to go.

Over the last five years in particular, the specific brand of activism to which you refer has re-legitimized homophobia. It's also re-legitimized open misogyny in ways which would have been frowned upon had they been uttered a mere few years earlier.

This is the biggest assault I've seen on women's rights in my lifetime. Of course a board devoted to feminism and women's rights is going to prioritize it!

alwayslucky · 07/03/2021 12:42

International Women's Day was marked on the Radio 4 enforced religion hour today. By a young man talking about his religious youth group, followed by a boys' choir.

HeadIsFucked · 07/03/2021 13:43

The issue I see, is yes there are a lot of topics to do with the GRA and such. But, if transactivists get their way, all womens rights will be pretty much gone in one swoop, so this does seem to be one of the most important issues to be ontop of right now. Its not much god focussing on the pay gap, is men are icluded in the womens stats. No good talking about male violence, while male violence is being hidden in female stats, which will in turn bring about a day of 'omg women are as bad as men, see!!'

Ontop of this, threads like this confuse me a bit. If there is a specific topic you want to discuss, post it and I am sure replies will be gathered. If there is more than one topic, post them all! It only ever seems to be 'other women are talking about stuff I dont care about', rather than any attempt to open up discussion in other areas.

Yes, I think 'the trans topic' is very focussed on right now, but I also see why. And totally fail to see why people cannot start threads on other stuff, if the amount of trans stuff bothers them.

HeadIsFucked · 07/03/2021 13:46

It seems like this board believes the only threat to women is trans people.

I also find this kind of thing disingenuous. Its not trans people who are the threat as such, though if they are of the male sex, they are as much a risk as any other male.

While male violence and such is not the only issue facing women today, it is a bloody large one. So, I don't really get the 'why are feminists concerned about this?!' angle.

Exactly. I think in general posters on FWR are very clear that the threat to women is the removal of our rights and protections which is partly facilitated by the removal of our words to describe ourselves.

Women object to the push to allow any male person who claims it to have full access to womens spaces and protections.

Anyone who sees protecting women's legal rights as anti-trans need to consider the logic of their position a bit further. Why should women not seek to protect the rights and safeguards we fought for?

Blurred lines are dangerous.

What did you think about this tweet on IWD?

Trans people do have a home in @TheGreenParty

Transphobia does not.

Self ID is now party policy.

"Sex Based Rights" was defeated.

The party will not be debating if my workplace should be banned in the UK.

We won 🏳️‍⚧️💚🎉

So the Green party’s co-chair for women is celebrating the ‘defeat’ of sexist based rights and celebrating that GenderGP is not to be campaigned against by the party in light of the exposure of such poor safeguarding practices.

Again, this comes back to my point for your query about ‘representation’? Is this representation YOU are happy with?

Are we to believe that the primary focus of this person is on females when they wish to abolish ‘sex based’ rights like they are not important? How do you see this working in your mind?

Why don't we centre women?
Helleofabore · 08/03/2021 10:04

sexist based

Sex based!! Autocorrect failure.

Cailleach1 · 08/03/2021 10:13

Does sexism exist if you stop recognising sex?

Helleofabore · 08/03/2021 11:07

This is exactly the point cailleach1

Helleofabore · 08/03/2021 12:45

I am not going to post a link to another tweet from this co-chair for women in the Greens.

However, one of their tweets had a link to a vid of someone dancing and celebrating with the words of a song over the top. Their tweet was

I think this should be the LGBTIQAGreens official song after everything we've done this weekend

One verse was

Why yes, I’m an evil left wing sheeple snowflake
^working for the deep state,
here to force your wives to get abortions^
and then leave you for transgender lesbians.

It was posted on twitter at 2.08 am on 8/3/21.

So, officially in time for IWD.

Please tell us @yeahbutnaw are we are able to discuss female representation in women’s officer roles in relation to things like this? Because I think it is a legitimate conflict and needs lots of discussion.

And does this then also cross over into a discussion about violence against women and girls?

This is a political party senior member who is supposed to represent women and girls. To your mind are they doing their job?

PurpleHoodie · 08/03/2021 12:51

Unless female, and male, Green party members EXPLICITY come out with sex-based pro-female/pro-protect ALL sexualities/pro positive enviromental statements (each and every one of them) them are useless.

Absolutely useless.
