Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Why don't we centre women?

yeahbutnaw · 03/03/2021 17:27

This is a feminism board but 99% of the threads are about trans people or gender identity.

What about domestic violence, FGM, the gender pay gap, period poverty, and representation in the workplace?

It seems like this board believes the only threat to women is trans people.

Am I missing something?

@TeaAndStrumpets Suggesting you need to search and trawl to find posts about feminist issues isn't really the gotcha you think it is.

Grin Oh I don't know, you are asking about specific topics, obviously you could save a lot of time doing your own research. HTH

Thread about Kathleen Stock and the women's organisations that have decentred women:

You could also venture outside FWR and look under health: women’s health, money matters, body and soul, being a parent etc etc

Lots of discussion about women issues that’s why mumsnet have allocated forum sections. Otherwise FWR would be chaos.

Which issues are of particular interest to you and do you need help with search function

MsFogi · 03/03/2021 18:12

OP feel free to start threads about any of the issues you list and you will no doubt get replies. However, the pressing issue is that if we lose the ability to define "women" with reference to human biology we will not be able to tackle any of the issues you list.

Did you know that the weekend before last, Hibo Wardere, FGM survivor and international campaigner, was harassed for being transphobic?

This is the thread about it.

This is my last thread about FGM in this forum, before that, where we collated a list of charities to donate to, in order to fight it. Please have a read, and donate to one if you can afford it.

The ones already mentioned are on the first page

Also, there is a T shirt available that supports Hibo Wardere's work. It centers women and would be a very good investment for a very important cause.

Thelnebriati · 03/03/2021 18:24

There's a court case going on today about women's prisons,. Should we be discussing that?

PotholeParadies · 03/03/2021 18:27

Buzz excellent point! The t-shirt is on sale for only another six days and Hibo says the proceeds could fund her work for a year.

Yes, I believe it's where biological males being housed with women may be against those women's human rights?

Buzzinwithbez · 03/03/2021 18:32

I hadn't realised it would only be available for a limited time. I've just placed an order for mine.
Better get on it, op! Wink

PotholeParadies · 03/03/2021 18:37

I am so thrilled this thread was made! I was going to do a bit of a bumpette of the t-shirt n a couple of days anyway, but this serves brilliantly, and may be seen by a totally different set of people.

I want to get Hibo to 500 t-shirts sold!

SmokedDuck · 03/03/2021 18:37

There are threads on DV pretty often. And it's not at all unusual to have ones about education or things like benefits, or motherhood.

Not all of these have a lot of unity of opinion about them, even on FWR.

However, trans issues are very emergent at the moment, in the way these other things aren't, both with regard to the law and the science, and social views.

DV, by contrast, isn't so controversial, most people in society think it's wrong, and there aren't any major legal proposals going on that would affect it much at the moment, or new research. So it gets brought up when something happens like a publicised incident, or someone wants to talk about it general, and maybe there is some discussion of the best way to prevent it or deal with perpetrators etc.

Emergent topics, especially ones that will affect whole systems, are always going to be discussed a lot.

PheasantPlucker1 · 03/03/2021 18:38

That t-shirt is brilliant, thanks for the links!

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 03/03/2021 18:40

Women's rights? So do you think male born rapists should be locked up with female prisoners? Do you think women on FWR should just turn the other way?

EachDubh · 03/03/2021 18:56

To identify and discuss women's rights you first need a clear, robust definition of what a woman is. If that definition changes or becomes unclear then the issues change as well. So it is important in this day and age that we, as women, establish a clear meaning of what a woman is and, as importantly, what a woman isn't.

YouWereGr8InLittleMenstruators · 03/03/2021 19:25

Just got Hibo's T, thank you for the link!
I'd missed it as am on Twitter holiday.

donquixotedelamancha · 03/03/2021 19:44

It's disappointing that you think the only threat to women is trans people and gender identity.

You asked for an explanation and then immediately mis-characterised the first post offering a detailed explanation of what women's issues were being discussed.

I don't think there is any point in replying to a post which just wants to complain about feminists doing feminism wrong. Feel free to start a thread about the feminist issues which matter to you.

BarbaraofKent · 03/03/2021 19:47

What about domestic violence, FGM, the gender pay gap, period poverty, and representation in the workplace?

Um, who is it that is affected by these issues? Is there a way of identifying them in the human population? How? What is that group of humans called? Are we allowed to name that group of humans without others feeling 'excluded'?

yourhairiswinterfire · 03/03/2021 19:50

Going to get a T from Hibo too! Marvellous, inspiring woman. Remains so classy even when being abused by hideous, toxic bullies.

Foggyday124 · 03/03/2021 20:31

Will get a Hibiscus t-shirt too, thank you for sharing the info!

Foggyday124 · 03/03/2021 20:31

Not hibiscus!!!

TwistedEyeOfHorus · 03/03/2021 20:35

We do centre women.

When I scroll along and read, the topics are all approached with concern for females at the heart.
