Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Urgent action for those in Scotland

The amazing Johann Lamont has put in an amendment to the forensic medical services bill. This is a really important piece of legislation which seeks to make the process easier for rape victims and we support it. We are concerned, however, that although the women who testified that access to a female examiner was the most important concern, the bill still refers to the gender - instead of sex - of the examiner.

Sex, unlike gender, is defined in the Equality Act and there is provision for recruitment under schedule 9. We believe that a small change will ensure that there is no ambiguity.

We would urge anyone from Scotland to please write to all eight of their MSPs and ask them to support the motion.

As Susan Dalgety reported in the Scotsman:
Her amendment may be only six words long – “for the word ‘gender’ substitute ‘sex’” – but it gets to the heart of the current debate about who counts as a woman.

“Women should be able to choose the sex of the person who conducts the investigation,” Johann told me last night. “This is a key test for the Parliament, which is committed to rooting action in the understanding of experience. Women courageously and powerfully spoke up so that others might fare better than them.

“The amendment is tiny but would be a huge step in listening to survivors. The committee was convinced. The Parliament should be too.”

Six words can make a world of difference.

I wrote to mine. I felt like I was living on my knees, having to beg elected members to prioritise women’s sex based rights at a most traumatising time in their life over men who say they’re women.

I don’t imagine the amendment will go through. The SNP and much of civic Scotland are the main advocates of genderism in the country. The distance between the rulers and ruled is vast, the contempt the former have for the latter is deep.
Please do email your MSPs about the issue. It is all we can do at the moment.

ArabellaScott · 07/12/2020 13:30

I have done, Morechocolate, all of them!

RunningWild, I totally agree, I felt fucking affronted that this even needs to be asked. I am so, so fucking angry. How dare these bastards try and pull this off?

Morechocolateneeded · 07/12/2020 13:47

While on this thread - can I ask who people are thinking of voting for in the Scottish elections? I'm at the stage where I don't think I can bring myself to vote for anyone, but maybe that would be the wrong thing to do? Can't bring myself to vote conservative because of Brexit etc. But everyone else is throwing women under the bus in favour of Trans lies?

NonnyMouse1337 · 07/12/2020 14:00

I might give my second vote to the new ISP. They are supportive of women's rights.

No idea about main vote yet. Will have to see how things develop over next few months.

ArabellaScott · 07/12/2020 14:22

Phhhh no idea!

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 07/12/2020 15:04

Done.

Bloody love La Lamont. Absolutely fearless and so bright she sparkles.

Wish she'd set up a women's party with Joan McAlpine and the GC minsters in other parties.

Done

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 07/12/2020 17:19

Lots of lovely emails! Up again

terryleather · 07/12/2020 18:54

Done - including to the fudmeister Patrick Harvie Grin

However I do have Johann as another of my MSPs so maybe she balances him out...

ArabellaScott · 07/12/2020 20:08

Fudmeister.

Grin
TheShadowyFeminist · 07/12/2020 20:09

I've got the fudmeister too 😁

I have fired off emails to all, and I am patiently awaiting responses.

PerkingFaintly · 07/12/2020 20:10

Thanks for this.

terryleather · 07/12/2020 20:31

@TheShadowyFeminist

I've got the fudmeister too 😁

I have fired off emails to all, and I am patiently awaiting responses.

Judging by previous emails there will not be many replies - Johann was one of the notable exceptions.

I usually don't bother emailing the fudmeister but I thought I'd see what happens this time....Grin

SassenachsWhaHae · 07/12/2020 20:46

I've emailed all of mine. Mostly Conservatives with a sprinkling of Green, Labour, and Lib Dem - no SNP.

Morechocolateneeded · 07/12/2020 20:47

I got one response - saying that they would support the amendment. Silence from the others.

TheShadowyFeminist · 07/12/2020 21:14

"I usually don't bother emailing the fudmeister but I thought I'd see what happens this time...."

My sentiments too. 👍

Galvantula · 07/12/2020 22:03

Done. Most of mine probably fuds too.

Hope they get plenty of encouragement to support this. 👍

EachDubh · 07/12/2020 22:27

Emails sent, doubt I will get a response or that they will bother to vote for the amendment.

PostieModern · 07/12/2020 22:37

E-mails sent this morning. One positive reply (from a Conservative) and one reply from an MSP's saying that she is in hospital for planned surgery

Jings I have had a reply already from an MSP (Labour) who is supporting the amendment. :)

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 08/12/2020 09:16

postie we possibly have the same MSPs, I got the same responses.

ChristmasSlayRide · 08/12/2020 10:11

Willie Coffey send an acknowledgement email from a caseworker but nothing further yet.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 08/12/2020 11:52

Another bump. I've only just sent mine Blush. I also used WriteToThem, just remember you'll need to use it twice, once for constituency MSP, and once for regional MSPs.

Can anyone explain why the ScotGov doesn't want to amend gender to sex in the bill?

NonnyMouse1337 · 08/12/2020 12:02

Apparently in their report the Scottish government claim they are "not immediately convinced there is legislative ambiguity". 🙄
