Do you think men should be allowed to wear skirts?

This was brought up by an article I read in the DailyMail (www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-8847579/Straight-married-father-three-reveals-hes-worn-skirts-high-heels-day-four-years.html)

Some would say the fact that people think it's ridiculous for men to wear feminine clothing but the reverse isn't true is because the patriarchy sees women as being inferior to men. Therefore in a true gender egalitarian society, clothes would have no gender.

What about dating prospects? Would you date a man who wore skirts/high heels?

Kilts?

Hoppinggreen · 14/11/2020 19:51

Allowed? It’s not illegal as far as I know

FTMF30 · 14/11/2020 19:52

Who is anyone to police what anyone wears? I wouldn't be attracted to a man iin a skirt though, tbh.

Joswis · 14/11/2020 19:54

They can wear whatever they like. It's usually intelligence I'm attracted to so the fabric keeping them warm can take whatever shape they want imo.

WitchFindersAreEverywhere · 14/11/2020 19:54

What’s stopping them?
Fear of being laughed at?
Women were mocked, assaulted and banned from wearing men’s clothing in various scenarios for centuries. But they triumphed.

VettiyaIruken · 14/11/2020 19:56

I didn't think they weren't allowed.

Like all new things no doubt it would be odd at first, like I'm sure it was when women started wearing trousers.

But, ultimately, I don't think anyone would give a lasting crap about it. It's not like men have never worn skirts (kilts) or dresses (Romans? Greeks) in the past.

That said, if men are to wear skirts they'd better clamp those legs together because having your giblets on view because you're a selfish manspreader would not be ok.

endofthelinefinally · 14/11/2020 19:56

Anyone can wear whatever they like as far as I am concerned. As long as they don't think clothes can magically change a person's sex, that's fine.

exwhyzed · 14/11/2020 19:59

People can wear whatever they like. Wearing a skirt won't make a man's penis shrivel up and fall off.

However, just like I couldn't get away with wearing a Mr Blobby suit in every day life without it getting side eye and comments, society likes us to look mostly within the fashions of the time. For men, right now, that means no skirts.

If men want skirts to be available to men without judgement then they need to keep pushing on that door and pushing boundaries just like so so many women before them have had to do with 'men's things'.

Antibles · 14/11/2020 20:05

They are allowed to. Many would just be ripped to shreds by others for associating themselves in any way with the inferior, penetrated sex though.

It doesn't matter what arbitrary item or act it is (names, clothes, colours, mannerisms etc) a significant enough number of men in that culture will give it a massive swerve it to prove their masculine credentials to the others. Hence homophobia too.

It's bloody offensive to women but that's the patriarchy for you. They could learn to 'widen the bandwidth' of male action and presentation but they do seem to find it a struggle...

It's also why loads develop a sexual fetish about those forbidden things.

NotTerfNorCis · 14/11/2020 20:05

Decorative, fancy clothing can look good on a man. Check out some of the upper class styles of the last centuries. But clothing that is entirely associated with women is a turn-off because he's sending out 'woman' signals that conflict with reality.

june2007 · 14/11/2020 20:05

Also what do you count as skirt or a dress? Many men where serong style outfits and what we might call dresses but they are right for their culture. Do you mean like what we would call a ladies skirt? I think one could get tired up in beurocracy if we go down this route.

formerbabe · 14/11/2020 20:08

Would you date a man who wore skirts/high heels?

Well that's not especially relevant. I wouldn't date a man who plays the guitar at parties but I don't think it should be banned or anything!

And anyone can wear what they want within the realms of public decency of course.

WhoWants2Know · 14/11/2020 20:11

Lol at playing guitar at parties!

xxyzz · 14/11/2020 20:16

Since when is feminism about policing what people wear along gendered lines?

No skin off my nose. People should wear what they like.

And why is this question on a feminist forum? Try to imagine this question was reversed - try replacing men with women and skirts with trousers. Who is advocating a clothing police?

334bu · 14/11/2020 20:20

A beautiful man in a kilt oh my!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ICJump · 14/11/2020 20:21

People should be able to wear what ever they like within reasons* Dress, high heals, go for it. If more men wore high heals i might have a better chance of finding a comfy pair that fit my feet.

*Safety like riding motorcycles, or wearing a uniform for sports, clean scrubs while practicing medicine.

Housewoes23 · 14/11/2020 20:23

As long as they stay TF away from me, I don't care what they wear. Grin

Needmoresleep · 14/11/2020 20:23

Why on earth should men not wear what they want...as long as they meet safety, professional or public decency requirements.

Who would be doing this ‘allowing’

Herja · 14/11/2020 20:24

My dad used to wear skirts quite often in summer. Cotton wrap ones, like you buy near the seaside. No one ever batted an eye, though this was possibly because he was very, very masculine seeming and an agressive alcoholic. People who had batted an eye would have had a newly broken eye socket around the eye... It genuinely didn't look wierd though, it fitted in with his generally grungy, new age tramp look.

Conversly, my mother dressed almost exclusively in mens clothes for many years, which makes sense as she has very broad shoulders, is tall and needed clothes suited to physical work.

People should wear whatever they want, so long as it meets all requirements of decency for the situation.

Kit19 · 14/11/2020 20:24

Men can wear whatever they want

Canwecancel2020 · 14/11/2020 20:25

Harry Styles?

Kit19 · 14/11/2020 20:25

I wouldn’t date a man in skirt & heels but then I wouldn’t date a blond man either because that’s my personal preference

MaudTheInvincible · 14/11/2020 20:26

@Kit19

Men can wear whatever they want
Agreed. They can wear whatever they want.

Women, on the other hand weren't legally allowed to wear trousers in France till 2013.

Canwecancel2020 · 14/11/2020 20:26

David Beckham?

LizzieSiddal · 14/11/2020 20:28

In many countries men do wear something similar to what we call a shirt. Of course men should wear whatever they like.
