Do you think men should be allowed to wear skirts?

This was brought up by an article I read in the DailyMail (www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-8847579/Straight-married-father-three-reveals-hes-worn-skirts-high-heels-day-four-years.html)

Some would say the fact that people think it's ridiculous for men to wear feminine clothing but the reverse isn't true is because the patriarchy sees women as being inferior to men. Therefore in a true gender egalitarian society, clothes would have no gender.

What about dating prospects? Would you date a man who wore skirts/high heels?

In answer to you4 question op

I would not date a man wearing high heels.

I would date a man wearing a kilt or a sarong or whatever skirt type thingie

StillAFeminist · 14/11/2020 21:07

Many men across the world wear dresses/skirts

I have a weakness for men in dish dash Blush

NewlyGranny · 14/11/2020 21:08

No laws about who wears what in this country! As long as everyone's decently covered, they can wear whatever they choose. I like the look of a Victorian/Edwardian frock coat myself, and of course there's a frisson about those hairy legs glimpsed under a swirling kilt...

If it's out and out women's style skirts and dresses, the issue for a man (can we still say man?) is likely to be the reaction of his peers. There won't be many women shouting at him in the street or threatening him with violence for not confirming to arbitrary dress codes. 🤷🏼‍♀️

TheChampagneGalop · 14/11/2020 21:08

Lack of pockets is probably the bigger feminist issue.
High heels aren't trendy anymore and I'm very happy about that.

littlbrowndog · 14/11/2020 21:09

Yeah swirling kilt sexy as fuck tbh

Mum2jenny · 14/11/2020 21:10

Wear what you want but I’m not sure I’d date a person in very high heels, male or female.

Moonagedaydreem · 14/11/2020 21:12

Harry Styles wears dresses and he's hot

This thread needs pictures.
I say if it's good enough for the Queen, it's good enough for me.

Do you think men should be allowed to wear skirts?
thanksgivingchi · 14/11/2020 21:15

As a Scot I've got no issues.
Men in kilts can be extremely hot.

laudemio · 14/11/2020 21:16

Quite right champagnegalop I often buy mens clothes for the pockets, and also they tend to be thicker, warmer and better wearing.

MaudTheInvincible · 14/11/2020 21:16

MrsRogerLima shocking isn't it. I mean when you learn about it it's completely shocking. I mean there was never any good reason to put that it in law, but they did and the patriarchal powers that be didn't bother rescinding it till less than a decade ago.

Paris women finally allowed to wear trousers https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-21329269

altforvarmt · 14/11/2020 21:19

I completely agree that any man should feel free to wear a skirt if he wants to. As long as I’m not expected to wear a skirt, I don’t care.

I do find it interesting when people (here and elsewhere) suggest that men already wear skirts in the form of kilts though.

Kilt-wearing men would absolutely not consider that they’re wearing a skirt (and it’s possibly a bit culturally insensitive to suggest that it is a skirt). In Scotland, the kilt is considered very masculine, and after weddings you’ll most frequently see them worn at football and rugby matches. Most men who’d wear a kilt wouldn’t contemplate wearing a skirt.

I absolutely think men should be free to wear a skirt, but a kilt is not a skirt.

Gottalife · 14/11/2020 21:22

Of course, why not? It's the norm in South Asia and rainforest dwellers.
It's a cultural thing.

exwhyzed · 14/11/2020 21:25

a kilt is not a skirt

What if a woman was wearing it?

littlbrowndog · 14/11/2020 21:25

My brother graduated from uni in Newcastle and we walked to graduation place with him in full kilt outfit.

Omg the cars honking and people clapping him was awesome. Always remember that and you know when they have the metal bits in their shoes so you hear them every step.

Don’t know wher I am going with this. But hey harry styles Scottish men are so much sexier than just wearing a random dress to show your erm gender neutral stuff

Ylvamoon · 14/11/2020 21:26

Why not? A Sarong is a type of skirt worn by men and women in many countries.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 14/11/2020 21:27

Afaik in the UK and probably the vast majority of the world, men are allowed to wear skirts.

jennie0412 · 14/11/2020 21:28

Wtaf? Why wouldn't they be able to? If this was about women not being able to wear trousers there'd be (rightly so) uproar.

Lily193 · 14/11/2020 21:29

Men should wear whatever they like. I would have no problem dating a man who wears a skirt.

Krazynights34 · 14/11/2020 21:31

Of course they can. I have a good friend who did (with my encouragement). He stopped after the village kids threw eggs at him, but he shouldn’t have had to. He found it liberating. I didn’t care for his taste in skirts but that’s by the by.
Anyone can wear what they want. I’ve still no idea why anyone would enjoy heels but then again, I wore PVC clothes (trousers mainly) for years. So I’m no expert

Do you think men should be allowed to wear skirts?
MadamBatty · 14/11/2020 21:39

I don’t give a rats arse what people wear so long as their bits are covered.

I wouldn’t date a man who wears heels. I stride & walk everywhere. He wouldn’t be able to keep up with me.

jj1968 · 14/11/2020 21:39

@NotTerfNorCis

Decorative, fancy clothing can look good on a man. Check out some of the upper class styles of the last centuries. But clothing that is entirely associated with women is a turn-off because he's sending out 'woman' signals that conflict with reality.
Are you suggesting your sexuality is based on gender stereotypes? How strange, I thought it was all about genitals and chromosones round here.
Hailtomyteeth · 14/11/2020 21:43

Men can wear what they want. I'm born in the fifties, teenager in the seventies. I like men in dresses and make-up... as long as they don't try to tell me what I can or can't be as a woman.

BlackWaveComing · 14/11/2020 21:43

Man in skirt? Sure. Would make a lot of sense where I live - hot and humid 5 months of the year.
