Do you think men should be allowed to wear skirts?

This was brought up by an article I read in the DailyMail (www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-8847579/Straight-married-father-three-reveals-hes-worn-skirts-high-heels-day-four-years.html)

Some would say the fact that people think it's ridiculous for men to wear feminine clothing but the reverse isn't true is because the patriarchy sees women as being inferior to men. Therefore in a true gender egalitarian society, clothes would have no gender.

What about dating prospects? Would you date a man who wore skirts/high heels?

Although why anyone would opt to go from comfortable, practical shoes to high heels is beyond me.

Kettlingur · 14/11/2020 20:29

"Allowed?" Who is doing the allowing? I don't understand this thread.

3JsMa · 14/11/2020 20:30

If I would see man in kilt and Dr Marten's I would probabaly marry him on the spot.Grin

BoobsOnTheMoon · 14/11/2020 20:32

Well there's no skirt police Hmm

And I don't mind at all if men want to wear skirts. In fact I rather like a man in a skirt and a bit of eyeliner, so long as he remains grounded in reality and doesn't try saying he is a laydee.

picklemewalnuts · 14/11/2020 20:32

Oh it's him again. Thought there was a second one for a moment. Interesting that he's american. I thought his references to ungendered clothing below the waist and masculine clothing above the waist may have been a language/translation issue but clearly not.

NeedToKnow101 · 14/11/2020 20:33

Men can wear skirts of course, and essentially do in many countries. Who gives a shit. But it doesn't make them a woman.

iwantmyownicecreamvan · 14/11/2020 20:33

@endofthelinefinally

Anyone can wear whatever they like as far as I am concerned. As long as they don't think clothes can magically change a person's sex, that's fine.
THIS

Especially if it gets the message across that just because you like wearing dresses/makeup/heels whatever it doesn't mean you are a woman - and vice versa.

NeedToKnow101 · 14/11/2020 20:34

That article is in Femail. It should be in the 'men's' section.

feelingverylazytoday · 14/11/2020 20:38

Of course men can wear skirts. Can't really imagine why they'd want to though.

EyesOpening · 14/11/2020 20:39

Women, on the other hand weren't legally allowed to wear trousers in France till 2013.

Wow, so recently, that’s shocking! I guess someone spotted that there was a law against from way back when, that no-one has remembered. We might find there’s one of those weird by-laws in UK still where women can’t where trousers on a Sunday if she’s holding a chicken or something

Yes
Tartyflette · 14/11/2020 20:42

I do have a soft spot for a man in a kilt. I think it's the pleats and the way they make the kilt swing when he walks.
I remember seeing a very striking chap in a kilt ski-ing on New year's day in Switzerland. I watched him for quite a while but he didn't fall over once. ☺️☺️

MrsPear · 14/11/2020 20:42

Quite frankly wear what you like. Every culture from the beginning of time has had different ideas of what the different sexes should wear but I don’t see why. The average joe is obvious from the average jo in a sack cloth. Oh and wearing the clothes that your culture subscribes to belonging to your opposite sex does not make you that sex. It is not medically possible to change from xx to xy or vis versa.

MrsPear · 14/11/2020 20:44

Oh and if it was the 1920s you would be asking can women wear trousers if you were in the UK!

laudemio · 14/11/2020 20:48

Men are allowed to wear whatever they want. So long as they are not exposing themselves who cares.
Why is this a feminist issue?

Mylittlepony374 · 14/11/2020 20:51

They can wear whatever they want. Quite partial to a man in a lavalava.

TheChampagneGalop · 14/11/2020 20:55

Oh yesss, I love to see a handsome man in a kilt.
Not a feminist issue though. It's up to men to wear what they want.

HotPenguin · 14/11/2020 20:56

In other cultures men do wear things similar to tunics/dresses/skirts, you can see many of these in multicultural cities I don't think it's illegal.

blowinahoolie · 14/11/2020 20:57

Many do. It's called a kilt.

MrsRogerLima · 14/11/2020 20:58

@maudtheinvincible

What? Really?

Datun · 14/11/2020 20:59

It's not about wearing skirts, it's about dressing as (what they perceive to be) a woman.

Fetishising women, especially the concept of their subordination, by dressing as them, is completely different to a sartorial choice involving a skirt.

NeedToKnow101 · 14/11/2020 21:00

Or me. And not even in fashion.
BingoGo · 14/11/2020 21:01

As long as people are clothed, they can wear whatever they want to wear.
I reckon the more people see men in dresses or skirts, the less strange it becomes.
As for dating, it is entirely irrelevant to me as I am a lesbian.

SciFiScream · 14/11/2020 21:01

I don't give a shiny shit if men wear skirts. Clothing shouldn't be restricted by sex. I count my blessings that I can wear trousers...even though there is still pocket discrimination!
