Just watched it, it featured Benjamin Butterworth, George Galloway and Rose of Dawn. BB got his arse handed to him by Piers and Rose was brilliant! Well worth a watch! It was on at 8.15 so you can watch it in an hours time if you're at home. Also Twitter reactions were v positive, with pp wanting to buy the book as a result!

I just watched it with DH. He said at the end: “I never thought I’d find myself agreeing with Piers Morgan”.

@FloralBunting

Managed to isolate BB's face from that bit at the end.Grin

Oh come in, Voldemort? In his fucking dreams. Wee Benjy is Wormtail

Peter Pettigrew, the rat

DidoLamenting · 16/09/2020 21:26

The end was very, very funny.

Pffft. Third extra on the left at the back, no lines, no name, over emotes, is later replaced, only the diehards notice the replacement.

Now I have a bit more time I'm watching it again. There are so many layers. Ben starting self-righteous and strong and his comment about JKR writing with a male name "indeed" smirk then how his face falls as the disagreements begin, Piers jumping on that BB hasn't read the book, Suzanna's "but he's not even transgender" interjections, George calling him Benjamin Button, Rose of Dawn's struggle to stay composed. Did anyone else notice Ben immediately agreeing not to call Piers "cis"?

I think it's a shame though that when Rose of Dawn was saying about the backlash against JKR there was no mention of the abuse and threats that she has received. That really would have made people sit up and listen imo.

Anyway, aside from all of the above - I thought it was interesting that they chose Rose of Dawn to represent the transgender community. They didn't acknowledge directly that Rose is trans, but they chose someone from the community that disagreed with the trans-rhetoric. That would not have happened a year ago.

He did (I've also just watched it again) but his facial expressions looked like he really really wanted to challenge that but didn't know how to Grin

Tee hee. I have a grudging respect for people who don’t give a fuck if they are unpopular and stand by their sometimes deeply unpleasant opinions (see P. Morgan/ G.Galloway). That said, it’s just occurred to me that wee Benny does completely the opposite - he cares so much about what people think that he’s totes cool with looking like a twat on national tv.
I’m going to go and think hard about my psyche (after I’ve dealt with the glee of Rose of Dawn trying to stop laughing, Piers going full ‘don’t call me cis’ and George’s narrative arc.) Made my night. Tbh I didn’t really need Benny, he was a useful catalyst - but his pomposity and utterly misplaced self-importance was the icing on a truly delicious cake.
Even nobbers can be useful. All types.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 17/09/2020 10:15

And his comment about JKR writing with a male name "indeed

Id forgotten this

What a twattish pointless comment

Among many twattish pointless comments to be fair

FloralBunting · 17/09/2020 10:29

Yeah the petulance about JK uskng a male name was odd. Is he cheesed off at her appropriating male cultural success by using a gendered name like Robert? Is he clueless at why she used JK instead of Joanne with Potter books in the first place?

Has he just not thought any of this through and just hates her with a blinding eagerness?

It's all such a mystery.

PurpleHoodie · 17/09/2020 10:35

Floral I waiver between thinking people like this are wilfully malicious wannabe overloards - or thick-as-pig-shit.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 17/09/2020 10:37

Can’t they be both purple?

Does he know that George Eliot was a woman? Does he know the Bronte sisters originally adopted male pen-names? (Etc) Twerp.
merrymouse · 17/09/2020 10:45

Also Robert Galbraith was a deliberate attempt to hide her identity so that she could publish a book without all the razzmatazz of launching a new book by JK Rowling.

How is that wrong?

PurpleHoodie · 17/09/2020 10:47

Rufus This crop of pob faced from-the-same-mould are proving that "both" is possible. You're right.

I’ll be honest

It took me years to read the strike series because i knew JKR had written it...im not even 100% sure why now

Sorry JKR if youre reading...the books are really good, great characters and plot 😳

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 17/09/2020 10:50

Pob faced

Hahahahahaha

FloralBunting · 17/09/2020 10:58

He should be marvelling at her kindness to blokes, really. By choosing a male name to divert from the fact the books were written by a highly successful woman, she helped the waning confidence of the male sex by letting them think there was one more successful male author than there actually was.

FlyingSquid · 17/09/2020 10:59

I'm reading the new book now (and was getting a bit humphy about people giving away plot details, but I see they're not really spoilers).

There have been a couple of mentions of the murderer, or at any rate a murderer, wearing women's underwear, not just a coat - but surely that's fair enough, given that it's a kink well known to happen in real life? Are men up in arms about her portrayal of boringly-nasty-yet-safely-familiar Matthew, in case it shows her bias against tedious money-obsessed blokes?

(Must admit I would have chickened out of including it, given how much stick she's already had for saying that sex exists -- but she's a brave woman. Still needs better editing, but I suspect she resists that too.)

PurpleHoodie · 17/09/2020 11:06

JKR could write a book on the ABC and still the sexist prats would have more than a wee moan.

InfiniteSheldon · 17/09/2020 11:06

Well it's not often Piers and Suzanne are a joy but that was epic. Love the full on don't call me cis! No misgendering allowed, it's become a very acceptable public response.

NotBadConsidering · 17/09/2020 11:13

Look what I got today! Excited.

I’m already a step ahead of Benny Boy because even if I haven’t read it yet, I at least have it in my possession 😆😆
