Has anyone seen William Shatner's twitter? He is arguing against the use of cis and how it is an insult. He seems to be doing quite well too.

@MNHQ deleting all my posts. If you could show me where hate speech has been posted please do tell.

Sorry spinach. I am on my phone today and can’t be arsed flicking back and forth.
@JamieLeeCurtains yes, he did the real slim shady too Grin
That makes me very happy.

Spinachfinger · 05/08/2020 14:46

@Winesalot, I'm glad we can both see the word 'cis' for what it is and where it may be applicable. It is silly to use it as a descriptor in on ordinary setting. I can see how it is suited to academic studies.

From the YouTube suggestions it looks like he's done Bohemian Rhapsody too.

I forgot about this gem.
merrymouse · 05/08/2020 14:59

It wasn't that long ago that we didn't use words like straight, bisexual, non-binary, asexual etc but we do now. I guess that we are all a brainwashed cult!

You are mixing up different concepts. Straight, bisexual and asexual have clear meanings. They are words that refer to sexual attraction. 'Straight' is a bit offensive, because it implies a value judgement, but its meanings is at least clear.

'non-binary' only has meaning if you believe in the concept of gender, so does relate to a belief system. Whether that means you believe in a cult depends on your definition of cult.

Oh yes. spinach I agree with you. I think that the community is well aware of the emptiness of the term, the negativity of its use here. I suspect that is very much why they wield it so aggressively.

If the person using it understands that it is a ‘non’ word and uses anyway, it is exactly like the power of having scientists and medical practitioners saying sex is a spectrum and this 2+2=4.

It is all about power. And that if you repeat these like mantras, they take it as proof.

Cutting and pasting into my best clips from MN folder.

I need one of these! Organised by subject

TyroSaysMeow · 05/08/2020 15:03

Fair warning for anyone going looking for the Shatnerian Rhapsody: there's a still in the video in which his Starfleet-issue skintight swimming trunks leave nothing to the imagination.

Guessing it's going to be crickets as usual on the demonstrable harm to others of promoting the cis/trans binary by identifying within it.

I'm not saying that anyone else should apply that label to themselves. Just don't give me abuse when I want to apply it to myself. Already on this thread I have been called brain washed, that I have zero self-respect, that I am a weak example of a woman.
Nobody has given you abuse though. Disagreement isn't abuse. Hmm

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/08/2020 15:09

who is insisting that cis belongs in academia.

Well? It's a completely meaningless identity politics term that 99% of the population don't use.

merrymouse · 05/08/2020 15:09

But ever since I've said that I am cis, I've had plenty of abuse and people trying to tell me that cis is null and void. That it means I have zero self respect. That I can't be cis and be a proper woman

It's the feminism board - historically the most confrontational part of a site that came up with 'AIBU'.

In 2003 you would have had received push back if you had said that you liked to wear pink because it made you feel more feminine. Women on this board dislike the concept of 'cis' for the same reason that they disliked 'Lad Mags' in the 2000s - the implication that there is a right and wrong way for a woman to behave, present and feel.

You might think that is unfair, but then you need to explain why.

Winesalot · 05/08/2020 15:12

I recently read ‘Irreversible Damage’ and while I had heard most of it before, the thing that struck me is that I have always had my own thoughts and would hear something and pack it away to evaluate and sense check, fact check and discuss later. I assume all of us did this. It seems this is not allowed with the young women who are repeating these facts like truths. The book brought home to me that the need to feel part of the group is so strong that they genuinely fear the repercussions of not believing so totally.

And it is so true. The people who Say they believe the theories, ones easily and clearly demonstrably false or so lacking in facts are the ones who resort to ‘kindness’ and other emotive pleas when challenged.

I'm in my fifties. The words "straight " and "bisexual " have been going as long as I have been old enough to be aware of them

I'm in my 60s. Ditto. I was aware of the use of the word "gay" from about my late teens - so around 40 years ...

Staplemaple · 05/08/2020 15:48

I think one of my favourite replies to his tweet is saying theyre dissapointed and have just realised he isn't his character in star trek; seems confusing fantasy with reality is a running theme.

Spinachfinger · 05/08/2020 16:06

I'm wondering whether cancel culture will apply to books and films without cis in the title. It will they be renamed?

Pretty cis woman
Little cis women
Cis man in the mirror
When a cis man loves a cis woman

Fucking minefield
