It feels a bit... Frankenstein's Monster type science. Surely this is unethical at best? Will women be given the option to 'opt out' of donation to a science experiment?

It's grotesque. With this, men now don't need women.

merrymouse · 29/06/2020 15:14

Meanwhile women and babies die in some parts of the world for want of a midwife or some antibiotics.

Even in countries with universal healthcare and wide access to advanced medical care, access to IVF is limited.

The people who propose artificial wombs and womb transplants as some kind of egalitarian revolution that will help women or trans people never seem to bother too much with the economics of healthcare.

GrumpyGran8 · 29/06/2020 15:18

Christopher Inglefield is a plastic surgeon and he is spinning a yarn.
He was spinning exactly the same yarn a couple of years ago, I remember. Again, he used a successful donor womb transplant (into a woman) as "proof". There are at least two other Mumsnet threads on him - just search for his name.
He's a plastic surgeon, with no expertise whatsoever in gynacology, obstetrics, embryology or any other remotely relevant speciality. He's just doing it to get publicity for his clinic. I wish newspapers would stop giving it to him.

Michelleoftheresistance · 29/06/2020 15:23

Not to mention in a world where all the ethical issues and concerns were addressed and after the first couple of experimental 'look what can be done' projects were completed,

Would the huge, huge amount of NHS money be spent with the enormous amounts of medical processes, medication and drugs, monitoring and interventions from start to finish of pregnancy be available to make this an easily available option for large numbers of male people?

While female people give birth in underfunded, understaffed, overstretched and unsafe situations every day in huge numbers in NHS hospitals?

How would this be made equitable?

Plastic surgeon playing to the gallery there Hmm

Well of course they do. They're going to need a steady supply of fresh women to harvest the uteruses from.

CountessFrog · 29/06/2020 15:25

What a grim story

Brave New World - closer than you thought

Ereshkigalangcleg · 29/06/2020 15:30

It's like someone trying to play Mr Potato Head with real organs, just creepy as fuck.

This man is not the only one who thinks it's possible.

MingeofDeath · 29/06/2020 15:30

Wasn't it Inglefield who said that a gynecologist wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a real vagina and a neo vagina?

Eveta · 29/06/2020 15:30

Transwomen don't have the right to a womb. It's something a woman needs to be willing to agree to. I've opted out.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 29/06/2020 15:31

YY. Read the link I've just posted.

JamieLeeCurtains · 29/06/2020 15:31

Blessed are the endocrinologists, for they shall talk sanity.

vixxo · 29/06/2020 15:34

Ffs what a load of shite

ShiveringCoyote · 29/06/2020 15:35

This has gone far enough. The uterus and accompanying reproductive organs are an under studied and fascinating thing. Ever see a placenta? It's a natural marvel. It's not a fucking travel cot to be popped up whenever its needed.

merrymouse · 29/06/2020 15:35

Well of course they do. They're going to need a steady supply of fresh women to harvest the uteruses from.

More realistically women will always be needed because they are cheaper.

TeaAndStrumpets · 29/06/2020 15:39

Jaxhog It's more reasonable to look at the odds and conclude that men are optionalWink

Come Armageddon, the race could be replenished very easily with some actual women and a bit of frozen sperm. Not so if the survivors don't have their own eggs.

OliveKitteridgeAgain · 29/06/2020 15:44

This is a bloke who makes his living taking large amounts of money off the deluded, making them think they "pass", when they really, really don't in the vast majority of cases. This is just one more delusion he is pedalling for his potential customer base.

DuDuDuLangaLangaBingBong · 29/06/2020 15:45

My DD had to take a drug that is usually used to prevent rejection after organ transplant.

It gave her a beard and moustache (age 8) so I doubt many transwomen will be willing to make that sacrifice for a uterus.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 29/06/2020 15:45

“Just looking at the potential number of trans females who might seek uterine transplantation surgery and it’s abundantly clear it could become a vital medical service."

Documents from Imperial College reveal that these people think although it's completely illegal to transplant a uterus into a male now, this will be found to be in breach of the Equality Act if the male is a trans person.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 29/06/2020 15:51

Thanks no I'm not sure they've fully thought that through.

ItsNotNormalLove · 29/06/2020 16:02

Several of you have said you have opted out or will be opting out, but how have you done that? The NHS organ donation list doesn't mention the uterus, I've just checked. I wouldn't want mine to be donated so I'll be making sure my family know. I'm opted in to donate other bits but like others have said this seems more Frankenstein-ish.

BigGee · 29/06/2020 16:04

I don't know why they don't just look into brain transplants. Take the whole female body (TW could look at a nice glossy catalogue and choose the style, colour, design etc, a bit like choosing a new car) and then the brain could just be implanted into the "new vessel". After all, they already HAVE "lady brains" that like pink and lipstick, so it'll be easy.

Of course, a source of female donors will need to be found, but I'm sure a nice breeding centre could be set up somewhere isolated, where female "donors" could be raised ready for implantation. I'm sure there will be an island somewhere that could be taken over. There will need to be "incubators" to raise the first donors - I'm guessing these could be female prisoners who meet the requirements (scaled on attractiveness, intelligence, hair colour, that kind of thing) who are carefully matched with male inseminators who would obviously be paid handsomely for the job. I mean, lord forbid they aren't rewarded for their breeding lines.

It worked for the Man With Two Brains, didn't it? Dr Huffufffer or whatever his name was. He just implanted a female brain in a female body which was his big mistake...

Ginkypig · 29/06/2020 16:05

@TwoTribes

Yes you can opt out. I have.
Can you post a link as to how if you don't mind?

Just so if someone wants to they can find the correct information straight on the thread.

VickyEadieofThigh · 29/06/2020 16:08

It's utter bollocks and the man knows it.

If science had advanced this far, any woman with a womb would be able to have a baby, IVF would never fail and infertility would be a thing of the past.

I've been saying this sort of thing all through this nonsense - they can't even prevent the large number of miscarriages that perfectly healthy women suffer all the time, much less implant an organ that has no business being there into a male body and make it function successfully.
