What have you bought as a result of supporting JKR?

I was thinking about how all these companies are jumping on the woke train. They must think, somehow, that it's good for business. Probably as a result of blue haired losers on twatter screaming at them that they'll be 'cancelled' if they don't.

But then I thought, hang on, I've spent extra money this week as a direct result of my desire to support JKR and those who have stood with her. And I bet I'm not the only one.

So, I thought it might be interesting to have a thread on it.

So far, my extra "I support JKR" spending is as follows:

Harry Potter fabric fat quarters £4.99 x 3
Harry Potter pyjamas £3.99 x 2
Harry Potter duvet set £8.99
Harry Potter cushion £4.99 x 2

(God bless the Aldi middle aisle!)

The book 'Rain' by Melissa Harrison, as a direct result in her tweeting support for JKR. £8.99.

Future likely spending:

Additional books by Melissa Harrison if I like this one. Roughly £8 each.

Tickets for the HP studio tour when it reopens (been twice, would probably have gone again at some point but this has motivated me to bring it forward). 2x adult tickets = £94.

Harry Potter books, house covers editions, hardback. Approx £15 each x 4 (only ones available) = £60.

So, current total spend = £50.91

Projected future spend = £180

I'm going to get the Cormoran Strike books when I get paid next week.

I donated to Lumos. You can easily text a £10 donation in the UK.

Gronky · 16/06/2020 12:58

The rights to merchandise are owned by the film studio, while JKR does receive royalties on the sales, I think the main cast do as well.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 16/06/2020 13:01

Gronky I've no issues with that. I don't like the idea of 'cancelling' people. Plus I bet JKR gets more than the little scrotes do. Grin

I just bought all the Cormoran Strike books (which are really good!) and the Strike TV series.

Gronky · 16/06/2020 13:05

That's good to know, SirSamuel. I wanted to make sure your decision was informed.

Roseburn · 16/06/2020 13:05

I've ordered the first Robert Galbraith book.

I'm not into crime writing really, but Im looking forward to trying this.

OvaHere · 16/06/2020 13:06

I bought a special ed Bluray HP box set for DS at xmas (he wanted it anyway)

I shall probably buy the Ickabog and gift it to various small people I know.

I didn't know there was a TV series. Where can you buy it? Is it streamable?
SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 16/06/2020 13:08

VickyEadieofThigh · 16/06/2020 13:09

All the Cormoran Strike novels.

I know she doesn't need the money, but I'd love to hear that there's been an upsurge in sales of JKR'S work as a result of this.

Melroses · 16/06/2020 13:09

The Ickabog books will be different in different countries as they each have their own competition. There could be many to collect.

Yeah! Buy the books. 👍🏻

MissEliza · 16/06/2020 13:11

Does she have a charity/foundation?

GeraltOfRivia · 16/06/2020 13:12

I bought the cormoran strike books for my kindle and some of the HP books for my kindle too, to protect my paper copies Smile

Melroses · 16/06/2020 13:13

Yes, there is the Lumos charity. The Ickabog proceeds will be going to Covid-19 charities.

Pigeonfaces · 16/06/2020 13:13

I bought a Cormoran Strike book. I’d like to rewatch a Harry Potter. But I don’t think I could bear it, knowing that Ron, Hermione and Harry grow up to be either (a) unprincipled and cowardly and greedy, or (b) really foolish and naive, or (c) downright misogynists who don’t believe women are entitled to safety, privacy and dignity - take your pick as to what lies behind their stance. It’s off putting whatever motivates them.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 16/06/2020 13:19

Pigeon I feel the same at the moment, but I think I will be able to in a few weeks. At the moment it's too raw.

MissEliza · 16/06/2020 13:19

Best way to support her is to donate to her foundation. She doesn't need the money and it sends a more direct message IMHO.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 16/06/2020 13:22

Not sure - I got it from Google Play Movies but I'd guess others like Amazon Prime have it.

PenguindreamsofDraco · 16/06/2020 13:24

The Cormoran Strike books.

Lumos donation.

CaraDune · 16/06/2020 13:25

Strike novels here too.

Bumblebutts · 16/06/2020 13:29

I brought the 1st Cormoran Strike book, too see if I like it and will buy the others if I do

BlooperReel · 16/06/2020 13:29

There will be plenty of Ickabogs as gifts this year

missmoz · 16/06/2020 13:32

Maybe instead of giving your money to an actual billionaire you could donate directly to a women's shelter. Then you could prioritise women's privacy, dignity and safety if that's the main concern?
