What have you bought as a result of supporting JKR?

I was thinking about how all these companies are jumping on the woke train. They must think, somehow, that it's good for business. Probably as a result of blue haired losers on twatter screaming at them that they'll be 'cancelled' if they don't.

But then I thought, hang on, I've spent extra money this week as a direct result of my desire to support JKR and those who have stood with her. And I bet I'm not the only one.

So, I thought it might be interesting to have a thread on it.

So far, my extra "I support JKR" spending is as follows:

Harry Potter fabric fat quarters £4.99 x 3
Harry Potter pyjamas £3.99 x 2
Harry Potter duvet set £8.99
Harry Potter cushion £4.99 x 2

(God bless the Aldi middle aisle!)

The book 'Rain' by Melissa Harrison, as a direct result in her tweeting support for JKR. £8.99.

Future likely spending:

Additional books by Melissa Harrison if I like this one. Roughly £8 each.

Tickets for the HP studio tour when it reopens (been twice, would probably have gone again at some point but this has motivated me to bring it forward). 2x adult tickets = £94.

Harry Potter books, house covers editions, hardback. Approx £15 each x 4 (only ones available) = £60.

So, current total spend = £50.91

Projected future spend = £180

I shall be down the bookshop on Saturday, loudly asking for the Strike books.

I have bought these from www.standingforwomen.com/.

There is also talk of a Harry potter sorting hat shirt on their facebook page - www.facebook.com/humanfemales/

Nothing. I support what she has said but she doesn't need our money and probably won't even notice. I'd be more likely to donate to a charity for lone parents in poverty instead.

I've donated to Lumos and increased my monthly donation to MSF who she also supports. I'll get the first Galbraith book when I've finished my current book.

LightAPennyCandle · 16/06/2020 21:15

Thank you, MountainWitch. That actually sounds good but maybe not the book for me just right now - with everything that's going on on the world I need a bit of escapism! Smile

@Light it's very good but a bit of a hard read.

I bought the Cormoran Strike books a few months back when she first supported Maya Forstater. Recently bought The Casual Vacancy and got my mum to buy the Strike books too. Just set up a small monthly donation to Lumos which I knew nothing about till I read this thread!

As others have said, it's not about giving JKR money it's about showing her support at a time when she is receiving so much hate.

Quillink · 16/06/2020 23:28

Donated to Lumos.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 16/06/2020 23:28

I've spent loads on her books and HP merchandise. I was already encouraging DD in her love of the world JKR has created, because it has such richness and so many great female characters. But when I realised she was going to stand up for my daughter's right to have single sex spaces during puberty (free of the male gaze and male penises) then I MAY have gone a bit mad....

I still don't understand how we're at the point where development charities bang on and on about how important single sex spaces are for enabling girls to access education in other countries while taking away those very spaces here. Forcing girls to stay off school during their period, or to go all day without using the toilets. Such progress.

A donation to Lumos. There's a bit where you can say who it's in honour of, whether it be one off or monthly, so I put her name, and her contact email as the one to send their note to, and just put, "In thanks for your courage." It's a genuinely wonderful charity. too.

Given she's insanely rich, that seemed the one thing I could do that would matter to her.

donate.wearelumos.org/give/195856/#!/donation/checkout

Her email is info at jkrowling dot com

The website also says *Text CHILD to 70577 to give £10 (UK only). If anyone would like a swift and easy way to pay tribute.

She donated the Tales of Beedle the Bard's royalties to Lumos, as well, to cover all admin costs, so every donated penny goes straight to the field spending. So you could buy a swisher copy of that book, and the royalties would reach Lumos, while you supported Rowling.

I've also bought my daughter a very fancy set of the Harry Potter books. She's a mad keen fan as it is, and the existing set are her brothers which causes squabbling, so she will love them. And she'll be getting a lot of HP clobber on her birthday next month, plus lots at Christmas too. Will get the adult novels for myself; I'd always meant to, but there are so many books I want to read. Now, I have the motive. And then some!

ChavvySexPond · 16/06/2020 23:57

I bought the Strike novel I don't already have. And followed JKR on everything.

Hulo · 17/06/2020 00:08

I will focus on likes and retweets on Twitter. I will also enthusiastically endorse any (positive) mention of JK Rowling and Harry Potter.

For instance, a work colleague mentioned a recent Harry Potter viewing party she had had with her children (16 yr and 19 yr old) and friends. How lovely, I said, that sounds like fun

violetgrey · 17/06/2020 00:14

I donated to Lumos and will buy The Ickabog book for my nephew when it comes out.

JuniLoolaPalooza · 17/06/2020 00:21

Thanks for this thread, just donated to Lumos.
I'd also recommend Rachel Rooney kids books. She's a brilliant poet and has come in for Some Shit over this.

jakeyboy1 · 17/06/2020 00:23

Well Primark has reopened so I hope they have lots of Harry Potter gear in!

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 17/06/2020 00:32

I've just bought the first Strike book. Don't know if it's been mentioned (haven't RTFT) but Robert Galbraith is published by Hachette (eventually) so not only are you supporting JKR, you're supporting a publisher who has stood up for their writer.

OhMsBeliever · 17/06/2020 00:33

I've set up a monthly donation to Lumos.

I might buy the illustrated versions of HP, I've been wanting them for ages.

Why don't you post the receipt for your donation to Women's Aid? Pour encourager les autres.
TehBewilderness · 17/06/2020 02:20

I pre ordered Troubled Blood the next Galbraith book. Ordinarily I would wait till a week or so before it was available to preorder.
I will be donating to Lumos but have not yet done so.

LunaRabbit · 17/06/2020 04:05

I play to buy all the illustrated books and perhaps some house merchandise, finally. I've also made a commitment to not support authors, book reviewers, and other people who speak out against Rowling or women's rights. If I really want their books, I will borrow them from or find them used. I also wrote a letter to the author that disappointed me the most, an older writer of children's books as well. I'm not saying that anyone must do this, but I think it's important to send a message to virtue signalers that while they might protect themselves from the woke mob, they also lose the respect and support of normal people.

okMaybeIAmATERF · 17/06/2020 05:50

People who set up a monthly donation to Lumos, did yours get set up obviously going to the England and Wales charity, and in pounds? The webpage said that donations in pounds would go to that, vs in dollars going to the US Foundation. I clicked pounds, gave an amount, set up payment by paypal; got confirmation both at the time and by email that my donation is £X monthly, but actually what's come out of my paypal is a bit more than £X, listed as a conversion from dollars, and the receiving organisation on the paperwork (even the stuff that says £X) is the US Foundation. This seems not quite right - the part that definitely doesn't seem right is the part where I offer them £X and have (slightly) more than that leave my account, but I'm wondering if there's a bigger problem with their website. Definitely want to be sure my donation is attracting giftaid properly. Would be interesting to know if others experienced the same. I've emailed of course.

I bought all of the HP books in the language I’ve been struggling to learn for the last couple of years.
