What have you bought as a result of supporting JKR?

I was thinking about how all these companies are jumping on the woke train. They must think, somehow, that it's good for business. Probably as a result of blue haired losers on twatter screaming at them that they'll be 'cancelled' if they don't.

But then I thought, hang on, I've spent extra money this week as a direct result of my desire to support JKR and those who have stood with her. And I bet I'm not the only one.

So, I thought it might be interesting to have a thread on it.

So far, my extra "I support JKR" spending is as follows:

Harry Potter fabric fat quarters £4.99 x 3
Harry Potter pyjamas £3.99 x 2
Harry Potter duvet set £8.99
Harry Potter cushion £4.99 x 2

(God bless the Aldi middle aisle!)

The book 'Rain' by Melissa Harrison, as a direct result in her tweeting support for JKR. £8.99.

Future likely spending:

Additional books by Melissa Harrison if I like this one. Roughly £8 each.

Tickets for the HP studio tour when it reopens (been twice, would probably have gone again at some point but this has motivated me to bring it forward). 2x adult tickets = £94.

Harry Potter books, house covers editions, hardback. Approx £15 each x 4 (only ones available) = £60.

So, current total spend = £50.91

Projected future spend = £180

Just donated to Lumos

talkingdeadscot · 16/06/2020 15:27

Have bought the first 3 Cameron Strike books and will now make a donation to Lumos (hadn't thought of that).

Galvantula · 16/06/2020 15:40

The first two Cormorant Strike novels. I love a good detective novel so I'll be getting the rest as well :)

Galvantula · 16/06/2020 15:42

*Cormoran. Darn autocorrect.

Galvantula · 16/06/2020 15:43

Oh and HP colouring books for oldest 2 DC, also courtesy of Aldi aisle of random. I got the fat quarters last year 😅

NoraEphronsneck · 16/06/2020 15:48

I've donated to Lumos too.

EverardDigby · 16/06/2020 15:49

All of the Cormoran Strike books, which I read in quick succession and I've pre-ordered number 5

LouHotel · 16/06/2020 15:52

I bought fantastic beasts and where to find them illustrated edition and Beadles of the bard because that goes to Lumos.

I will be buying the ickabog book for every school child birthday present I have to in the next school year so for my two school age children I'll probably get to 50 copies. Fuck it.

This is a fantastic idea. Stealing it!

And a wee donation to Lumos.

TheFormerPorpentiaScamander · 16/06/2020 16:01

Just ordered some more fat quarters from Aldi. Not sure JKR actually gets money from them but it's a good excuse Grin. Plus I can make more face masks now that ds is back at school.

My wishlist if things I'll buy when I'm rich is about £827839291827737828922 though (does a wish list count??)

Pertella · 16/06/2020 16:03

Have just donated to Lumos.

Will be buying my son the Harry Potter books for his Birthday next month.

Might get the Ickabog too!

tiredanddangerous · 16/06/2020 16:09

I have started my collection of the illustrated HP books and ordered the first Robert Galbraith.

We have so much HP merchandise in our house already (my autistic 12 year old is obsessed!)

I just hope JK is alright. I want to give her a big hug and take her out for cake. I want her to know the difference her writing has made to my girl and to me.

Ninkanink · 16/06/2020 16:15

Write her a card or letter! Her publisher’s address is posted on a few threads.

And leave her flowers on the flowers for JK thread.

Ninkanink · 16/06/2020 16:17

Donation to her charity, and books for my daughters (they’re both young adults now and we’re avid HP fans back in the day. They deserve to have a full adult’s set each, I think.)

YgritteSnow · 16/06/2020 16:25

Neil Oliver backed her immediately on Twitter so I bought his book that day - it's a great book actually. I already have all JK Rowling's works so just looking forward to the next Strike book in September now.

mamapants · 16/06/2020 16:27

I have preordered the new Cormoran Strike.
Donated to Lumos.
Already gave all the rest if the books.
Will get the newest illustrated one when it comes out and the Ickabog.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 16/06/2020 16:29

Ah I knew about Neil Oliver, must add him to my 'to buy' list. I enjoyed the article he wrote in The Times (I think) on JK as well.

Am also debating an online subscription to The Times.

Can’t stand it when the text box autocorrects what I wrote! I know what I want to say, fgs!!

You can also buy the audio version of the Beedle of the Bard which is performed by different actors and the proceeds go to Lumos.

I'm looking forward to listening to it later!

bakingdemon · 16/06/2020 16:46

My LO is too small for Harry Potter yet, but an elderly family member is giving them the beautiful illustrated editions for Christmas/birthday so they're ready on the shelf. They are really gorgeous books

LightAPennyCandle · 16/06/2020 16:53

Donated to Lumos which is a great cause. If you want to donate £10 just text CHILD to 70577.

I've had already read all the Cormoran Strike books - they're great! So I pre-ordered the newest one, out in August.

I have all the HP books at home. I've never been interested in the films - they often spoil books for me - and my DC are still too youngfor HP. But I intend to buy the Icbabog when it comes out - one for me and several more as Christmas gifts for children I know. I might but the Casual Vacancy - is it any good?

Just to say for me it's not about trying to make a billionaire richer - it's about trying to show a strong and principled woman that she hasn't been cancelled and that she has the support of many. She might be protected from financial ruin but she has compromised her own mental health and emotional wellbeing in order to speak the truth, and I couldn't admire her more.

MountainWitch · 16/06/2020 17:28

I donated to Lumos. And will be buying the illustrated HP books bit by bit as they are pricey. Our current set is a real mish mash of covers so perhaps a cohesive 7 might be in order too... Grin

MountainWitch · 16/06/2020 17:29

To the PP who asked about The Casual Vacancy, yes it is good, but it's bloody sad. A really savage look at class in the UK.

Mollyollydolly · 16/06/2020 17:32

I donated to Lumos and also treated myself to the illustrated Harry Potter books. They are a thing of beauty - any child (or adult) would love them.
