What have you bought as a result of supporting JKR?

I was thinking about how all these companies are jumping on the woke train. They must think, somehow, that it's good for business. Probably as a result of blue haired losers on twatter screaming at them that they'll be 'cancelled' if they don't.

But then I thought, hang on, I've spent extra money this week as a direct result of my desire to support JKR and those who have stood with her. And I bet I'm not the only one.

So, I thought it might be interesting to have a thread on it.

So far, my extra "I support JKR" spending is as follows:

Harry Potter fabric fat quarters £4.99 x 3
Harry Potter pyjamas £3.99 x 2
Harry Potter duvet set £8.99
Harry Potter cushion £4.99 x 2

(God bless the Aldi middle aisle!)

The book 'Rain' by Melissa Harrison, as a direct result in her tweeting support for JKR. £8.99.

Future likely spending:

Additional books by Melissa Harrison if I like this one. Roughly £8 each.

Tickets for the HP studio tour when it reopens (been twice, would probably have gone again at some point but this has motivated me to bring it forward). 2x adult tickets = £94.

Harry Potter books, house covers editions, hardback. Approx £15 each x 4 (only ones available) = £60.

So, current total spend = £50.91

Projected future spend = £180

I bought an illustrated Harry Potter for dd. I've donated to Lumos and the Anne Rowling Institute.

Maybe instead of giving your money to an actual billionaire you could donate directly to a women's shelter. Then you could prioritise women's privacy, dignity and safety if that's the main concern?

Money is not the point, support is.

I made a donation to Kelly Holmes' charity, a very small one (under £1), but put a message about standing up for women, as well as the routine reply I got a personal one.

I don't have much disposable income but I do buy presents at Xmas for women in my local shelter, maybe not the most practical thing but I do it because someone on here said their best Xmas present had been soap when she was in a shelter.

I can't financially support all the good causes I would like to, but twitter costs nothing.

I’ve never been interested in Harry Potter, it’s just not my kind of thing but I ordered the first two Strike novels and finished the first one in record time, so I’m pleased I did.

I know she doesn’t need the money, it’s not about that, it’s about showing everyone who matters that her sales won’t be affected by speaking up for women. Besides, she seems like the kind of billionaire I don’t mind giving my money to, she pays her taxes and gives to charity, she doesn’t live on a private island!

Wildlingyoumakemyheartsing · 17/06/2020 08:25

I bought a new set of HP books that are lovely - mine are all wrecked from being read too many times.
When we have children I'll buy them paperback version to read so these ones stay immaculate

I'd love to do HP masks and T shirts but I'm not sure I'm brave enough as so many people I know are woke and I live near to my workplace who would also probably have a problem with it.

Thehollyandtheirony · 17/06/2020 11:06

I’ve bought the Cormoron Strike novels. I will order a Neil Oliver book for DH because that’s more his kind of thing. Thanks for highlighting his support.
I’m hoping to buy a piece of art from Jess de Wahls at some point.

HandsOffMyRights · 17/06/2020 11:27

I've been supporting her on Twitter.

I noticed that TRAs have been posting on threads that relate to children's artwork - how low can they go?

Fortunately JK has lots of support and fans are reminding TRAs that these are threads for small children.

It always strikes me how little some TRAs seem to care about what material/language children are exposed to.

How I miss Lang's safeguarding posts on here, MN.

toinfinityandlockdown · 17/06/2020 11:30

I bought a Strike book. Like others said, she doesn’t need the money but she might need the emotional boost from seeing she is valued and her calm and careful voice on the subject won’t lose her all acceptance.

HashtagLurky · 17/06/2020 11:35

I bought the first Strike novel and loved it, a really good read. I'm just finishing the second one: she really can write character and suspense. I've been struggling to read for a long while, so to have spent three days absolutely gripped by novels has been incredible. Top woman, I'm donating to Lumos today.

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 17/06/2020 11:52

I was going to do a Body Shop order of a few treats for myself but I've donated the money to Lumos instead.
I've also downloaded the first Cormoran Strike book. I really enjoyed the TV series so looking forward to reading it.

I'm also going through Twitter and reporting the idiots posting threats and abuse under her tweets to children who've done Ickabog drawings. It makes me so cross to see a wonderful initiative like that highjacked!

BatShite · 17/06/2020 12:02

I bought all her robert galbraith books, 3 have arrived, rest on route.

I am planning on making a donation to lumos too as am due a decent amount of backpaid money someday soon.

I dont think TRAs swearing off her stuff will have any noticeable effect on her sales at all, if anything the publicity will make her sales higher.

The staff at the publishing house refusing to work o the bickabug should be sacked really, as no way is the publisher wanting to lose her, and IF they did, thousands more would be bending over backwards to secure her.

TeenPlusTwenties · 17/06/2020 12:16

Donated to Lumos.
Would be interesting to see their accounts. I wonder if they will spot a spike in donations?

HappyMealWithLegs · 17/06/2020 12:25

I don't really have much in the way of disposable income so I haven't bought anything, but I am choosing not to spend money with companies who I feel have shafted us (women). So I won't be buying from the body shop anymore, and I am going to have to change supermarkets from Asda to possibly Aldi. It doesn't make much of a difference but I need to do it for me.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 17/06/2020 12:35

Donated to Lumos too.

I’m only buying her books to give to the children I know, until the end of time.

jay55 · 17/06/2020 14:50

Nothing, I'm not working but I watched fantastic beasts on TV the other night.

Ninkanink · 17/06/2020 14:51

@HappyMealWithLegs it makes a huge difference. Flowers

deathswiftlyfollows · 17/06/2020 17:27

Just bought the first Galbraith novel :)

risefromyourgrave · 17/06/2020 22:43

I bought some reusable sanitary towels in Harry Potter fabric, thought it was rather apt! Grin

TheSingingKettle49 · 17/06/2020 22:46

@risefromyourgrave That’s amazing! Presumably they’re unisex for all those menstruating men 🤣

risefromyourgrave · 17/06/2020 22:56

@TheSingingKettle49 Nope, she uses the word ‘women’ (gasp!) when referring to who uses them!
From the website:
Women can go through around 16,000 sanitary pads during a lifetime and most of these will end up in landfill or lining our beautiful coasts.

WhatWouldTheFeministsDo · 17/06/2020 22:56

All the Strike books & I'll be getting the new one and the Ickabog for the DDs when they come out.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 17/06/2020 22:58

Also made a donation to Lumos - looks a really good and important charity. Am also about to start the first Strike novel. Smile

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 17/06/2020 22:59

I've bought my daughter the Slytherin collectors series of the Harry Potter books.

CatandtheFiddle · 17/06/2020 23:05

I’ve just had the first two Robert Galbraith novels delivered. Ordered them through Hive. Trying not to use amazon.

BingBongSong · 18/06/2020 10:05

Made a donation to Lumos. Thinking of buying the Cormoran Strike books for dh for Father's Day.

wellbehavedwomen · 19/06/2020 01:19

@okMaybeIAmATERF no, my monthly donation was in dollars too. No Gift Aid option, sadly. But still. I suspect there has been a spike in Lumos's income, if her book sales are any guide. In present world circumstances, that can't be bad.
