What have you bought as a result of supporting JKR?

I was thinking about how all these companies are jumping on the woke train. They must think, somehow, that it's good for business. Probably as a result of blue haired losers on twatter screaming at them that they'll be 'cancelled' if they don't.

But then I thought, hang on, I've spent extra money this week as a direct result of my desire to support JKR and those who have stood with her. And I bet I'm not the only one.

So, I thought it might be interesting to have a thread on it.

So far, my extra "I support JKR" spending is as follows:

Harry Potter fabric fat quarters £4.99 x 3
Harry Potter pyjamas £3.99 x 2
Harry Potter duvet set £8.99
Harry Potter cushion £4.99 x 2

(God bless the Aldi middle aisle!)

The book 'Rain' by Melissa Harrison, as a direct result in her tweeting support for JKR. £8.99.

Future likely spending:

Additional books by Melissa Harrison if I like this one. Roughly £8 each.

Tickets for the HP studio tour when it reopens (been twice, would probably have gone again at some point but this has motivated me to bring it forward). 2x adult tickets = £94.

Harry Potter books, house covers editions, hardback. Approx £15 each x 4 (only ones available) = £60.

So, current total spend = £50.91

Projected future spend = £180

I went to my local bookshop, currently trading via a table in their doorway, and loudly asked them to recommend me one of her adult books. I’m currently reading the first Cormoran Strike and enjoying it so far. I’m going to buy them all one by one and make a point of asking for them each time. Good point about the books of the women who supported her - I’ll look into that too.

Deliriumoftheendless · 16/06/2020 13:33

I donated to Lumos.

cremuel · 16/06/2020 13:34

@missmoz

Maybe instead of giving your money to an actual billionaire you could donate directly to a women's shelter. Then you could prioritise women's privacy, dignity and safety if that's the main concern?
Actually, whilst that is definitely a concern, I don’t think it’s the only concern. There has been a lot of talk about how awful JKR is, and an upsurge in her book sales will not only indicate to the world that people don’t think that, but that they’re actually trying to support her. I’m sure she wouldn’t care about the money generated at all but would care about that sort of anonymous but visible support.
CaraDune · 16/06/2020 13:36

Guess what, MissMoz, I can do both.

cheeseismydownfall · 16/06/2020 13:36

I've set up a modest but regular monthly donation to Lumos.

MrBennsshop · 16/06/2020 13:39

Have just read this on the Lumos website:

That newspaper article was the first step towards J.K. Rowling co-founding the Children’s High Level Group (CHLG) with Baroness Emma Nicholson MEP. CHLG became Lumos, dedicated to working towards ending the systematic institutionalisation of children worldwide.

I'll definitely be donating, JKR and Baroness Nicholson are both standing up for women and girls.

Fandoozle1 · 16/06/2020 13:50

I am going to buy the Harry Potter books (I missed out as a child, but DD and i can enjoy reading together now).

Branbleberries · 16/06/2020 13:53

I donated to Lumos, I thought, but then when the payment came up, it was all in American dollars, and so is my receipt, with an American address, so I don't know if I donated to the right place now! It did have the option of the £10 text donation in the UK though, so maybe it's all the same site, but I didn't see any way to change the donation amount to UK or to make sure it was the UK branch of it. I guess it doesn't really matter though.

I like crime novels, so perhaps I'll buy one of hers - which is best to start with?

ProfessorSillyStuff · 16/06/2020 13:54

I bought the first three cormoron strike booke in Google play books :D
Enjoying it a lot so far although I don't really have time to read fictional the moment hehe

contactusdeletus · 16/06/2020 13:54

Donated £50 to the LGB Alliance in her name. Planning to buy the Ickabog when it comes out - for now I'm reading along and hoping the website hits encourage her publishers to stick with her. (I'd love to say that would be a given anyway, with all the money she's made them, but the HP cast have me thoroughly disillusioned on that score.) Planning to donate to Lumos as well, now that other posters have suggested it.

contactusdeletus · 16/06/2020 13:57

I'm a minimum wage worker and don't get reliable hours, but this topic means a lot to me and I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is on it.

Chrestomanci3 · 16/06/2020 14:02

I bought a The Casual Vacancy and the first Strike book (am loving it), to go with the 8 HP books, 2 audio books, multiple lego sets, pyjamas, t-shirts and socks already owned. I also donated to Women's Aid in her name.

beenandgoneandbackagain · 16/06/2020 14:04

Bought a season ticket holder and asked the young work person at the book shop if they knew when The ickabog was being published.

Will Donate to her charity too.

SophocIestheFox · 16/06/2020 14:04

I donated to Lumos.

And will buy the ickabog when it comes out.

Mrsemcgregor · 16/06/2020 14:05

I bought a paperback copy of Order of the Phoenix, I have them all in hardback and started getting the paperbacks for the kids to read.

I also emailed her office [email protected] - I know her staff will read it and not her, but I hope that the support gets passed on to her. I got a lovely email back within a few hours. (Obv not from Jo herself!)

Heygirlheyboy · 16/06/2020 14:05

We are looking at the very cool HP face masks!

Cecily75 · 16/06/2020 14:07

Oh I like the idea of donating to Lumos, will be doing that.

Today I bought a stamp so I can send a card to her (via publishers) to thank her for speaking out in support of women.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/06/2020 14:09

@missmoz

I do both. I got the eye-wateringly expensive illustrated book.
TheTrickyWitch · 16/06/2020 14:10

I've donated to Lumos and bought the first 2 Cormoran Strike books for DH and DF for fathers day. Plus The Casual Vacancy for me.

I've also emailed her to add my personal thanks. As I can't stand up on my own social media (NHS doctor) I think it's important to show support and appreciation for the crap she is taking for women and children everywhere.

HairyPotter · 16/06/2020 14:15

We already have so much HP merchandise, I don’t think there’s anything left to buy, but I’ve ordered the first Strike book and will order the rest over the next few weeks.

I’ve also posted a couple of thank you cards from me and dd1 (although I’m not sure they’ll reach her, sent via Bloomsbury and just discovered she’s using different publishers)

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 16/06/2020 14:16

There's always one, isn't there?

I already owned the card and stamp I used to write with my support, and emailing was free, so no extra spends there, sadly. I got a great email back too, within a couple of hours, and this was right at the start. Her house elves are very busy & well organised creatures!

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 16/06/2020 14:17

@HairyPotter Bloomsbury are still her publishers for Potter, I think, it's the other stuff she writes that is with Hatchett (as she initially didn't reveal that she was the author, in order to ensure she was being published on merit).

OP posts:
beenandgoneandbackagain · 16/06/2020 14:22

I’m pretty sure she’s not an actual billionaire as she gives so much to charity?

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 16/06/2020 14:23

Yes, lost billionaire status as a result of her very, very extensive charitable donations. And that's with paying full UK tax.

FishAreAcquaintancesNotFood · 16/06/2020 14:25

Nothing because I don't tend to purchase things because of the way a company thinks or a figurehead for the company which I suppose Rowling is when you consider HP merchandise which she may have nothing to do with.

I buy books because I like what they say inside them not because the author has views similar to mine... and I already read and own all the Harry Potters :)

I do however take my custom away from companies that stick their noses where they don't belong or are actively dismantling women's or children's rights . so ASDA, Body Shop and the others can fuck right off. If you have nothing clever to say, just shut the fuck up. Businesses can't have opinions. They don't canvas the views of the people they pay minimum wage and ask them who they should support.

I did donate to Rowlings charity though. That was in support of her and other women who get it in the neck.
