I've lost the Purity Spiral / knitters thread but look at this

The GeordieKnits (not Geordie Knitter who's a different person) podcaster who came out of nowhere to drive much of the purity spiral in the UK has been jailed for fraud.

www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/18300481.woman-jailed-12k-day-trip-disneyland-holiday-fraud/

I saw it on Instagram this morning www.instagram.com/p/B9orQ2WpJO6/?igshid=t6lflwwba82z

So the accusations of profiteering on the basis of holding the moral high ground seem to have substance.

Wow. I don't know much about it, but I can't say I'm.surprised that another main driver of this bully cult has turned out to be a nefarious, integrity free person.

Saucery · 15/03/2020 12:06

So with all that hanging over her (fraud investigation etc) she decided to attack another person’s livelihood and haul a load of other businesses and crafters along with her? Wow. I hope they are ashamed of being taken in.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 15/03/2020 13:20

I wonder, it seemed like so many people and businesses jumped to denounce him before they were denounced themselves.

They must realise they've been played by a con artist now but I wonder how they'll handle it.

OMG I know her! I used to work with her.

Twunk · 15/03/2020 13:33

Can someone tell me a bit about this Geordieknits thing?

Coyoacan · 15/03/2020 13:58

I don't know who she is, but the article does say she didn't make any money out of it. Just lost a lot of other people's money.

Twunk · 15/03/2020 13:59

29 months is a hefty sentence, and it’s not suspended.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 15/03/2020 14:01

I don't know an awful lot, she started an Instagram account and a YouTube podcast under that name and when the purity spirals started she was right in the middle of it from what I can remember.

Then when Nathan Taylor posted his poem on Instagram about the knitting wars and use of the diversknitty podcast she seems to have found a UK based target. I watched Nathan Taylor's podcast a while ago that was a rebuttal of the accusations and while he didn't name her, it was pretty obvious it was her. It was a bit of a slog of 40 mins I think but she targeted anywhere that was holding a class taught by him and prominent followers of him on Instagram and told them to distance themselves because of his act of violence against a woman of colour who just wanted to speak to him.

He wasn't violent but he said did shout at her to go away. Her YouTube channel disappeared after his video apparently.

It was all a bit odd from the start tbh.

Thanks. Tbh she just sounds like a grifter.

Twunk · 15/03/2020 14:39

Thanks Flavia - now I’m looking into it, it all makes sense.

BlackberryViolet · 15/03/2020 14:47

I’ve been waiting for some comment from some of the ones who jumped on him. Nothing from any of them apart from some justifying what happened to him. It’s doesn’t matter what she’s done apparently. Makes me more determined to actually stay out of the on line knitting community now. It’s utterly toxic. There are so many designers and dyers I won’t touch anymore

Thinkingabout1t · 15/03/2020 15:20

Blimey. It’s a whole world I know nothing of. I thought knitting was a peaceful craft, and I imagined knitters as an amiable group comparing patterns. Gosh.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 15/03/2020 15:46

Grin where there's humans there'll be strife I imagine Thinkingabout1t

She was arrested for this 4 YEARS AGO?! Blimey.
She's been asking for donations for various things: from her Ko-Fi: "I’m currently having a bit of a rubbish time with my health and being ripped off by someone who sold me a car, so any donations are very gratefully received. I need the car to be able to get the GeordieKids to and from school safely"
Along with picture of child's school uniform naming their school.

Twunk · 15/03/2020 20:25

Is this the thread you mean Flavia?

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 15/03/2020 21:23

That's it, thanks Twunk! It'll be interesting to re read it now.

That's jogged my memory enough that I remembered there was a second one when the radio program was broadcast, it's here

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3809276-Purity-spirals

I thought that the instigators refused to be interviewed because it would be nearly impossible to logically justify their position but an upcoming court appearance would probably factor in too!

I’m glad I found it because it’s actually a great thread - also touching on the problem of American terms being shoe-horned into European and British contexts. I’ll read the other when I’m in bed.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 26/03/2020 11:04

Off topic to knitting but is anyone else seeing something like purity spiral in the Corona virus leaving the house threads?

It's like the Mumsnet chicken that can feed a family of 5 for a week taken to extremes.

No matter how many separate self isolating families you're shopping for, or how empty the shelves are of basics or the limits on the amount you can buy at once, unless you can declare you're shopping only once a week some posters are declaring you're a selfish idiot who is responsible for killing people.

I've yet to see a person who's deeply invested in imposing their idea of what is or is not appropriately woke on others who hasn't turned out to be a fairly awful human being.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 26/03/2020 11:16

On the Coronavirus threads, yes. I'm all for social distancing measures and have been under lockdown for longer than the UK has, but when you see people having bunfights about whether or not it's OK to take your dog out a second time in a day to pee/poo, and whether or not it's OK to let them walk around for a few minutes until they're able to do so, you do start wondering how much is understandable fear and how much is people loving the chance to scold others.

(There were suggestions that if your dog is so inconsiderate as to need to eliminate more than once per day you should just buy puppy pads and let them do so inside the house. Which I'm sure will work out brilliantly over however many weeks/months lockdown lasts.)

Datun · 26/03/2020 11:17

That's reassuring, kittens. I was idly reading yesterday about a woman who wanted to drive to the woods for an isolated walk, or, alternatively, walk on her estate potentially bumping into people like ninepins.

Whatever your personal opinion, the reactions were so extreme I started to laugh out loud.

Datun · 26/03/2020 11:17

Oh I didn't see that one.

SophocIestheFox · 26/03/2020 11:27

It really is bringing out the thwarted prefect in some people.
