The GeordieKnits (not Geordie Knitter who's a different person) podcaster who came out of nowhere to drive much of the purity spiral in the UK has been jailed for fraud.

www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/18300481.woman-jailed-12k-day-trip-disneyland-holiday-fraud/

I saw it on Instagram this morning www.instagram.com/p/B9orQ2WpJO6/?igshid=t6lflwwba82z

So the accusations of profiteering on the basis of holding the moral high ground seem to have substance.

Oh look, Cassidy messed up so they've sent Jess out to clean up the mess. It was only a matter of time.

With regard to tweets and emails sent by Cassidy, we would like to make clear they do not reflect the opinions and professional intentions of the Ravelry team, or the way we think about what people are experiencing. We have not been as aware as we should be that these messages were being sent. Cassidy was not in a state to be talking with people, though she does understand that this is no excuse and that the emails that she wrote were hurtful. She is ashamed and sincerely sorry. It will take a period of adjustment, but in the future Cassidy's role will be focused on technical work. She no longer has access to the customer service emails and her Ravelry mail is disabled.

I think one of the things about the Ravelry redesign that surprised me was that web designers don't learn anything about accessibility during their training. They've had to hire a separate accessibility consultant.
I really think people should know by now not to use flashing images without needing any formal training.

Omg.
What on earth had Cassidy SAID?!

Nara2k · 31/07/2020 10:46

I knew I'd get the knitty- gritty (ha! see what I did there Grin) on ravelry here. Long time lurker, first time poster, gc, knitter, blown away by all the purity spirals in the knitting community when I got to grips with them.
Would love to know what Cassidy said..

It's really odd as my 15 yr old DD is covering this in what is really a very basic entry level module on Web design.

It was some emails sent out, basically saying that everyone who said they'd had seizures or problems using the website was lying.

If you wanted to create the perfect email to fan the flames, I could probably think of a couple of other things to add but it's pretty close Wink

What is the relationship between Jessica and Cassidy? Because I feel like this "Cassidy was not in a state to be talking with people" is a completely inappropriate thing to say about a colleague.

Xanthangum · 31/07/2020 12:00

Back in 2005 Jessica was very much involved in the knitting blogging community and was feeling very frustrated with not being able to keep track of the detailed information that bloggers were sharing about their knitting projects. Casey, her future husband, put his computer science brain to this problem and the result was the launch of Ravelry in 2007.

Casey is now Cassidy; the thlot plickens...

MoltenLasagne · 31/07/2020 12:07

Right, married then. I still don't think I'd ever say that about DH (it sounds derisive to me) but maybe that's just their relationship.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 31/07/2020 12:57

That's what I mean about every previous decision where Ravelry have been applauded for their 'inclusivity' has actually been of benefit to Cassidy. Even the BLM fundraiser's they promoted focused on transwomen of colour.

It's just interesting to see that "I am now a woman and you must believe me" doesn't translate to "you have suffered seizures because of my new site and I believe you".

Always the computer scientists, huh?

I wonder where knitters will go when Ravelry gets shut down.

Cassidy/Casey sounds like the type to go off in a massive huff and take down the whole site with them.

I was on Ravelry back in the day. It's a real shame to see what's happened there.

fatblackcatspaw · 31/07/2020 14:24

ooh very interesting blog... yes I'd seen the crazy cassidy stuff on instagram....

Dmtush · 31/07/2020 16:11

I’ve only seen supportive posts about Cassidy, slagging them off but overall being sympathetic to his mental health issues. It’s been quite surprising really as sockmatician got a massive pile on for objectively doing less harm and being far more gracious about his criticism.

I genuinely think it’s due to people not wanting to slag off a trans woman as they fear being criticised himself.
