I've lost the Purity Spiral / knitters thread but look at this

The GeordieKnits (not Geordie Knitter who's a different person) podcaster who came out of nowhere to drive much of the purity spiral in the UK has been jailed for fraud.

www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/18300481.woman-jailed-12k-day-trip-disneyland-holiday-fraud/

I saw it on Instagram this morning www.instagram.com/p/B9orQ2WpJO6/?igshid=t6lflwwba82z

So the accusations of profiteering on the basis of holding the moral high ground seem to have substance.

I suspect kate Davies is just keeping her head down. A lot of people are. It was scary to see how so many people turned on her; honestly, there was also a lot of professional point scoring going on. And how Nathan taylor was thrown to the wolves..!
My final straw with the online knitting world was a knitted bag, trending on Ravelry, saying “fuck cis-heteronormativity” in trans flag colours. That in itself is unpleasant; I may not agree with people’s lifestyles, I don’t go around being rude about it. Then watching the SJWs defend it and go after those that complained? Nah. I’m off.

fatblackcatspaw · 24/07/2020 19:52

goddess that must have been one ugly bag... one designer Ysolda Teague who was central to the Kate Davies pile on enraged me so much I actually demanded a refund for one of her (crap) patterns. MAY SHE ROT IN HELL.

RadandMad · 24/07/2020 19:53

@LizA49 Yes, I think you're right about Kate Davies. She recited a few mantras to keep the wolves away. Forgiveable. Horrible to see one witch hunt follow after another. A few brave souls like standing up to it.

I was wondering the other day how long it would be before they all turned their attention to gender. I'm not on IG much any more, and purged almost everyone who got on board with the pile ons from my timeline. Also wondering how all those hand dyers with Harry Potter colourways are coping with the JKR stuff. Bet they're feeling the pressure to renounce/rename them.

RadandMad · 24/07/2020 19:56

@fatblackcatspaw Lol-ling at you demanding money back from Ysolda. Luckily I never bought one of her patterns, but agree she's particularly noxious.

LizA49 · 24/07/2020 20:01

@RadandMad the gender stuff is already there to a certain extent on twitter. When JKR made her stand in December over Mayas court case, a number that I then followed made “twaw” statements or (and I quote) “terfs can f* right off”.
I shut down my twitter profile after that. I’d liked a number of JKRs posts and some knitter/designer made a comment about checking follows and likes.
They were policing their followers!

fatblackcatspaw · 24/07/2020 20:02

she didn't refund me but suppsedly sent a donation to a mental health charity instead... but my blood boils when I think of her... nasty on two legs while professing to be pure as the driven snow...

Twunk · 24/07/2020 20:12

Interesting she’s back - though I did think the sentence was unusually harsh.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 24/07/2020 20:24

Ironically part of Nathan’s cancellation involved his design being dropped from the Harry Potter knitting book.

One of the ladies in my rl craft group was so shocked by Ysolda’s nastiness she vowed never to knit anything by her again.

ForgotAboutThis · 24/07/2020 20:32

Yes I've wondered how the indi dyers will respond to the JK stuff too. I've not checked the rav forums, but there's a big harry potter crowd on there.

fatblackcatspaw · 24/07/2020 21:12

let the ysoldaboycott begin!

Wbeezer · 24/07/2020 21:53

Ysolda is who I was hinting at she seems to have become over judgemental.
Shame, she has some lovely wool on special offer atm but i couldn't bring myself to click buy.
I find her designs rather derivative but she is good at styling and marketing.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 24/07/2020 22:08

I have have a mitten pattern from Ysolda I like but I'd unfollowed her on Instagram when she started spouting off about twaw and I was in danger of straining my eyes from rolling them too much.

@fatblackcatspaw

Yeah that was me - I'm not naturally drawn to supporting right wing women from the gun toting states who support Trump but I had a cold shiver down my spine when it happened and i thought whose next....
The worst for me was the crowing that it "rid Ravelry of the acrylic" which just seemed so horribly classist (not that they'd acknowledge that in the USA).

Also, having known a few women online who were ex Mormon or other similarly extreme patriarchal branches of Christianity, it felt to me they were cutting off a lifeline of commonality from vulnerable women. I don't know, it never sat right with me.

fatblackcatspaw · 25/07/2020 00:31

Exactly ... because groups of women coming together always has the inherent ability to cause disruption to the partriarchial state... once women start swapping expereinces and realising they are not alone - craft and knitting groups become consciousness raising groups / mutual aid. The other thing is the great throwing around of the phrase 'knitting community' - one began to see how small and limited it was. No disent no difference really. Anyway with Brexit and Covid I'm beginning to think the Momon housewifes who plan a spare 2 years food know something we don't....

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 25/07/2020 08:00

rid Ravelry of the acrylic oh the irony, since it appears that designers are currently being targeted for using expensive wool in their patterns under the cry of "affordability".

I don't know if the people complaining don't know how to go about substituting or if they feel they'd be judged for doing it but it seems daft either way.

OP posts:
ForgotAboutThis · 25/07/2020 11:48

The claim is that people used Rav to work out yarn substitutions, and now that they can't access it (or won't access it out of solidarity) then designers need to be more inclusive and explain substitutions.
There are, of course, various websites that detail all kinds of substitutions, if people go looking. But it's just another virtue signaling flag for people to wave.

fatblackcatspaw · 25/07/2020 12:17

Countess Ablaze has just done a raging post this morning on instagram stories about how furious she is about Cassidy (the trans one) not addressing their issues and how if they don't do disablilty then however much they bleat on about BLM and LBTQ+ they aren't inclusive... ooh

fatblackcatspaw · 25/07/2020 12:18

metaphrically lighting a cigarette shapening my knitting needles and enjoying this shit show very much.... I know I'm a TERRIBLE person

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 25/07/2020 12:50

That yarn sub thing raises so many questions.
Like, why can’t some people just grow up?
Why is the knitting culture online so bonkers when my rl crafting friends are lovely?
How can they seriously say all that with a straight face when all you have to do is google yarn substitutes and you will go straight to yarnsub.com? Do they not think it makes them look like idiots?

CountessAblaze does lovely yarn but her rebel punk schtick has always annoyed me. It’s basically flattering her customers by making them feel like they are doing something brave and radical when they buy wool. It’s expensive knitting wool, love, not rebellion.

fatblackcatspaw · 25/07/2020 12:54

on the otherhand the Shit Tea And Traybakes thing was brilliant....

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 25/07/2020 12:56

I missed that, what was it?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 25/07/2020 13:04

Oops sorry, I remember now.
Yes, it was excellent.

fatblackcatspaw · 25/07/2020 13:04

oh it was magnificent - a local business I think a restaurant contacted her about doing a charity event with knitters she would provide yarn and there would be a tea etc. They came into her shop but she was very busy so asked them to email her a proposal. Which they did but without leaving off previous discussions with someone else about the even which basically said as it was stupid middle aged women they could do it cheaply whith shit tea and traybakes. She was magnificent on a podcast Shiney Bee's about it - how women business owners were treated badly as if thier businesses were just hobbies and women in general. How they should be grateful to get publicity... as she said if she wanted publicity she could get her tits out. She designed two colourways one was Shit Tea and Tray Bakes and the other Tits Out for charity whcih sold out incredibly well so she made the dye open source and other dyers made up their own charity colourways following her dyes I think some astonishing amount of money was made across the globe £500,000 I think.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 25/07/2020 13:07
Shock Didn’t realise it had raised so much. That’s very impressive.
FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 25/07/2020 18:19

Yeah to yarn subbing, I mean, just work out the grist and you've got the info you need.
It would take perhaps 3 minutes of googling to learn how to do.
