Bloody hell if that's true, that's fantastic!

OP posts:
OvaHere · 22/02/2020 02:22

I think that's an old quote from Penny Mordaunt . They way it's written it's a bit hard to tell. A search brings up the same quote in older articles so I think its from when she had the W&E brief.

NewNameEveryWeek · 22/02/2020 02:25

This is great news. Now we just need to stop Scotland from ploughing ahead with this dangerous nonsense.

I don't really get the link to children in the Times article though? I understand the dangers of puberty blockers etc but don't really understand what that has to do with self ID and the GRA.

HerewardTheWoke · 22/02/2020 02:39

If this is true, then Alle-FUCKING-luia. It's like the grownups have finally arrived. Penny Mordaunt isn't a GEO minister anymore, so I wouldn't take her quote as gospel.

GC feminists should not be complacent though. Most importantly, there's going to be a lot of confused children and traumatised detransitioners to help in the years ahead (guess who will be picking up the pieces for decades to come - women, in the main). Then there's a bunch of court cases to win, and a cultural battle to reclaim women's sports, language, etc.

The Times also has a leading article on the Labour leadership contest, and takes a very dim view of the self-indulgence of the candidates re trans issues: www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/comment/the-times-view-on-the-labour-leadership-election-labour-pains-w0z087vfv

"It beggars belief that after a period of reflection the Labour Party should have concluded that the key to its future electoral fortunes lies in denying the existence of biological sex [ ... ]

"The result is that the leadership hopefuls now find themselves immersed in an ideological war with some of the party’s most stalwart supporters [ ... ] Their crime is to believe that Labour should continue to defend powers included in its own 2010 Equalities Act."

UnWilly · 22/02/2020 03:10

I really hope this is true

I also hope it isn't like a film where most people didn't realise there was ever even a threat so nothing changes and then the threat comes back because no one is looking for it

Aesopfable · 22/02/2020 05:48

They need to repeal the bloody thing.

NotAssigned · 22/02/2020 06:00

I was just coming on to say the same, aesopfable.

Now it looks as though we have halted the slide of the Overton Window towards full self ID, we need to set it in motion in the other direction.

The GRA is an utter nonsense. It's original purpose is obsolete anyway. Nobody but nobody (apart from incorrectly-assigned intersex people) should be able to change the sex on their birth certificate.

AnyOldSpartabix · 22/02/2020 06:00

I hope it’s true too.

Transactivism is becoming more and more visible. The extent of capture within the Labour Party has been laid wide open. It has reached a point where the commentary is so extreme that I can’t understand how anyone sane is still buying into it. I find it alarming, but hope the hints I see are correct: that increasing visibility will have the effect of speeding it’s demise.

There’s a brittle feel to it all.

mcduffy · 22/02/2020 06:25

I had a feeling in my bones that today was a good news day! Grin

BovaryX · 22/02/2020 06:35

“While we believe adults should be able to live their lives, and trans rights should be respected and protected, the government also has a role to play in protecting children,” a government source said

This is excellent news. The Times article specifically mentions that children as young as twelve can begin hormone treatment and that they are encouraged to exert autonomy in their choices by keeping their decisions secret from their parents. I think a tipping point has been reached with the confluence of various events;all of which expose this aggressive lobby to negative publicity. Thank you Rebecca LB, that Lloyd bloke for the stellar part you have played in this.

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 22/02/2020 06:40

Don't hold your breath on this.

Absolutely agree.

mcduffy · 22/02/2020 06:54

The essay by Janice Turner is impressive, too. Feels like coverage is snowballing. Thanks, Labour! Useful for something if not effective opposition...

BovaryX · 22/02/2020 07:16

mcduffy
The Janice Turner article on puberty blockers is great. The Keira Bell case is heartbreaking and as it proceeds through court, more negative publicity will ensue. Harry Miller's verdict happening in the same week as Labour contenders for leadership are committing to a Stalinist purge against left wing feminists was serendipitous timing. The wheels are coming off this bus, not a moment too soon.

An 11-year-old child is probably years from his or her first kiss. Yet the drug they are about to take will almost certainly lead to a medical pathway which will leave them sterile. Since their gametes will never be allowed to mature, doctors will not even be able to harvest their sperm or eggs. Can any 11-year-old understand the gravity of ruling out ever having children?

Languishingfemale · 22/02/2020 07:23

The challenge will be trying to roll back so many other horrors happening in the name of this ideology. Prisons, mixed sex toilets in schools/ everywhere, the toxic CPS guidance, the police taking their orders from trans groups, bloated Stonewall with its tentacles everywhere.
Maybe the comments about protecting children will help people to realise that there are real victims being harmed by this cult?

Datun · 22/02/2020 07:28

The process has to start with a halt to the drugs and then examine why the proliferation of girls showing up to demand them.

Bearded male lesbians going into schools advocating for a 'pick your identity based on these stereotypes' approach should be the next issue under scrutiny.

StarintheMorning · 22/02/2020 07:46

I suggest that the Government are banking on the Act changing in Scotland, it will then be literally a day trip away to ‘Gender Freedom’ and the right wing here can be seen to disapprove, whilst in reality just turning a blind eye.

Meanwhile our rights will slowly be eroded. Eventually it will be pointed out that it might as well be done here, because ‘what a ridiculous situation this is.’

Qcng · 22/02/2020 07:52

The proposals to change the Gender Recognition Act have met with criticism from some feminist groups, whose members are concerned about the prospect of trans people being able to use single-sex spaces

Not sure about this paragraph.
Feminist's primary concern is how easily self-ID can be abused by predatory males, and opportunists, surely. Not "genuine trans people just wanting to get on with their lives".

Babdoc · 22/02/2020 08:00

Qcng, transwomen have the same rate of violent crime offending as men, so we women don’t want ANY males in our single sex spaces. Saying they just want to get on with their lives- are you including “Karen” White et al in that?

Dozer · 22/02/2020 08:01

Just speculation until govt publishes its response / policies / any regulatory changes.

many delayed govt decisions and reports at present, eg HS2 and the Huawei thing (now published) online harms, Heathrow, this GRA one. Would be interesting to have a website tracking original government statements on timelines for decisions and what actually happens. Sometimes can drag on, eg with no public response following a consultation, for literally years.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 22/02/2020 08:02

If this is true it's a. huge, but b. only the beginning. Stonewall isn't going to stop pushing, and if one avenue is blocked they'll continue pushing via others.

rogdmum · 22/02/2020 08:04

I hope it is true. The Scottish Govt seem determined to plough through with their changes - I’m not convinced they will pay attention to this I’m the slightest. They might well use it to their advantage, pushing how “progressive” they are compared to the rest of the U.K.

Languishingfemale · 22/02/2020 08:05

Excellent point Datun. Getting these groups out of schools is critical. Hopefully the combination of countless parents demanding to know what toxic fantasies are being sold to their children alongside the growing evidence of harm via the Tavistock etc will make previously gullible headteachers stop and think.

I cancelled my Times subscription because it was too expensive. But if its paying for them to shine a light on this nonsense, I will start it up again. Well done The Times.

NotAGirl · 22/02/2020 08:18

Very encouraging it was starting to feel like a waste of time completing all those consultations and sending all those emails.
