Actually the vast majority if us don't even seem aware this sort of thing is going on. That's the worry. This might help I suppose. As a pp said most people think TWAW is being nice, an assertion that we accept people who don't conform. Rather than a statamenet with wide reaching implications for the rights and freedoms of other groups.

wellbehavedwomen · 16/02/2020 22:14

It really hasn’t. The Labour Party has. The rest of the world is sat there thinking WTF?

Jo Swinson and Maria Miller say hello.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 16/02/2020 22:15

Well done Dr Julia Long.

May your sunshine beam far and wide.

Women and girls thank you!

I also encourage you all to check out her on YouTube. She shared a chaired discussion with a trans women and discussed why she refuses to use preferred pronouns - was a real eye opener for me.

GreekOddess · 16/02/2020 22:16

Labour are so out of touch. They really haven't a clue.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 16/02/2020 22:21

I've encountered people who think that transwoman means a woman who is trans, ie. a female person, and transman the opposite, so I suppose one could think some people in that room might have been confused and going, well, of course a woman who calls herself a man should still be in a women's prison. I doubt it though, I think what's happened is the purity spiral to end all purity spirals combined with some male party members just being viciously misogynistic.

zanahoria · 16/02/2020 22:23

I like the way she looks over her shoulder and smiles at the camera everytime Lisa Nandy says something stupid.

DuLANGMondeFOREVER · 16/02/2020 22:24

If so, I agree. It’s excellent (and about far more than just cosmetic surgery)!

Michelleoftheresistance · 16/02/2020 22:31

Nandy wishes to use the bodies and lives of vulnerable, non consenting women to prove a political statement. She is very willing to forcibly expose vulnerable women to the fear, distress and risk of actual assault or worse in order for her to validate her own appallingly privileged, misogynistic beliefs.

Let that sink in.

It may take a while, it defies belief. I agree, this is actively evil. Women are not subhuman, they are not without rights in this country whatever dystopia she is personally dreaming of.

Michelleoftheresistance · 16/02/2020 22:33

Pimp is a word that keeps coming to mind.

Who uses vulnerable women with this utter contempt and irresponsibility?

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 16/02/2020 22:34

Thanks for the most recent video, it really is useful to have a face and voice to put to the "so who's responsible for all of this?" question, at least in terms of Labour.

(Not that I'm letting Nandy off the hook for her concerted refusal to think about the wellbeing of anyone other than herself and possible one of her constituents.)

GirlsInGreen · 16/02/2020 22:35

So now I see where I am with Labour - I am not politically homeless - I have squatters.

TorkTorkBam · 16/02/2020 22:36

I also find it disturbing that she suggests the transgirl she knows should not have to wait to be legally recognised as female. Teenage boy thinks he's a girl, Nandy says let's not wait to see if the kid is homosexual or might just grow out of it.

Was she saying that she wants self-id under a revised GRA extended to allow children to change their legal sex? And this is because she says she knows a transgirl who is unhappy about having to wait until adulthood?

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 16/02/2020 22:40

I find it extremely troubling that our society seems to have collectively decided to forget that changing your identity every few months is totally normal for teenagers and is a standard part of adolescence, which is why we have traditionally prevented kids that age from making decisions that can't be reversed. So hair dye fine, plastic surgery not fine.

Voice0fReason · 16/02/2020 22:41

It feels like some bizarre parallel universe.
Any hope of the labour party becoming a viable option have gone down the plughole.

R0wantrees · 16/02/2020 22:41

Do you mean this Institute of Art and Ideas event with Julia Long & Heather Peto August 2019?

Heather Peto of LGBT+ Labour was referred to in Lachlan Stuart's recent article:

'The Confessions of a Transphobe'

concludes:
But what interests me more than Heather’s occasionally erroneous account of events is the emphasis of what matters to the comrades of LGBT Labour.

The whole unnecessary fuss — and the subsequent media-determined narrative — arose from their utter discontent that the Labour Party had committed to the continuing legal entitlements of women (and men), as defined by the protected characteristic of sex, to be allowed service provisions on the basis of their sex when — and only when — it was a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim to define access to such services on the basis of sex and not on the basis of a differently defined ‘gender’.

This may well not be the policy of LGBT Labour but it is long standing Labour Party policy. It was not changed when we introduced the Gender Recognition Act in 2004 and it was explicitly underscored by the Equality Act in 2010. It has never been changed by decision of our Conference, or by a decision of the Courts, or by a statement from any Party Leader, or by the wording of any election manifesto, or by any policy announcement. It wasn’t even considered controversial until after the 2016 report of the Westminster Parliament’s Women and Equalities Select Committee, which itself did not accept the recommendations along similar lines submitted in the evidence provided by trans rights lobbyists including Stonewall.

But it dismayed trans people, according to Heather’s account and the actions of pop-up people like Ellie-Mae and her ilk. It dismayed the pop up people and LGBT Labour because it was the removal of the established legal rights of women that interested them.

Nowhere, ever, have I seen any recognition from any of them of the astonishingly bold, tangible and very expensive commitment that we gave to improve the lives of trans people by ensuring adequate and much improved access to health care services.
It’s not because they didn’t know.
It’s because that’s not what they’re interested in.

And I’m the transphobe?
Aye, right."

But it’s fucking terrible for the Labour Party, and bigger picture therefore fucking terrible for disadvantaged and vulnerable people of all types, of which the women in each are usually the worst hit, because it means a decade or more of Tory rule.

Tbh, I can’t really see how it’s great for trans people either. Now the public, many of them unaware of this issue until now, is being told that we have to allow child rapists to share prison cells with vulnerable female prisoners so that trans people can have the rights they’ve been denied until now. And that no discussion of this is to be tolerated. I can’t see how that helps genuine trans people at all.

LiveintheNow · 16/02/2020 22:44

For some reason this reminds me of the episode of brass eye where an MP was persuaded into condemning a new drug called 'cake'

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/the-mp-tricked-into-condemning-a-fake-drug-called-cake-has-been-put-in-charge-of-scrutinising-drugs-a6704671.html

DuLANGMondeFOREVER · 16/02/2020 22:48

Brass Eye is now real life.

Glinner is right, you cannot write comedy when there is no normal world to contrast with.

(Although I am very much looking forward to Titania McGrath’s reaction)

GCAcademic · 16/02/2020 22:50

Oh, you couldn’t make political satire now. Titania’s days are numbered.

LynnSchmob · 16/02/2020 22:51

There really does seem to be a glitch in the matrix. Why are politicians coming out with this shit? The general public thinks it’s guff and no amount of chanting is going to change that.

DuLANGMondeFOREVER · 16/02/2020 22:53

Last time I watched Doyle be interviewed he said he wanted to get Titania ‘cancelled’. Maybe this is his chance?

littlbrowndog · 16/02/2020 22:54

Or Philomena clunk where you just say what the fuck you want

But that was comedy

Them bonkers people pretend they believe it

Bet they go home at night thinking well told some whoppers today but hey no one was harmed

Just some crim women who are worth nothing compared to tha5 poor transperson in my constituency

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 16/02/2020 22:55

I love in the second video how Julia starts smiling when Peto starts talking about how gender identity serves an evolutionary purpose because primates. Also the reaction to saying a male person doesn't look like a woman is backtracking on feminism.

How she doesn't burst out laughing I'm not sure. Clearly she has more self control than I do.
