Sorry for my fairly lame question to Emily for the webchat tomorrow. Hope you managed to get in better questions?

Gosh, that was a let-down! She started so well, with really thoughtful, detailed answers, until she got to the gender questions. How could anyone answer a question about women being forced to be in prison with a male-bodied transwoman, by expressing concern only for the poor TW? Gee, thanks, Emily! Angry

Thelnebriati · 05/02/2020 18:48

Can you imagine if they answered questions about men with concerns about women?

David what memories do you have of Emily?

None.

pombear · 05/02/2020 19:07

On the one hand, incredibly unsurprising. On the other, incredibly disappointing.

Mumsnet should probably introduce a separate gender subsection to feminist chat to encourage back those women who don't think feminism is all about one issue.

Feminism is about one issue. Women. You know, and we know, and Emily knows what that really means in the real world, despite you and Emily fogging the issue - it's about women. FFS

Redshoeblueshoe · 05/02/2020 19:08

But David surely you were traumatized for ever or infinity or summat

DavidTheDinnerLady · 05/02/2020 19:09

Red, nah, mate, we were made of sterner stuff back then, not like these days.

NB my last post refers to the definition of 'women' that most of the real world understands, and doesn't include males/men who identify with the concept of being women. Who are, by definition, a subset of the category males/men (otherwise they wouldn't be able to use the transwoman word.)

I've written a short blog piece about today's webchat. I was hoping to compare her answer to the question put by @rogdmum (about whatever happened to 'The Mordaunt Inquiry') with that given by Keir Starmer; but Emily Thornberry didn't answer it at all.

I'll post it up shortly. Would anyone like the link?

RaveOnThisCrazyFeeling · 05/02/2020 19:18

I had a post disappeared (uncommented) last night on the web chat thread. I don't believe I broke any guidelines, I just politely pointed put that while limiting the number of answers given on a particular subject might be reasonable, limiting the number of questions (and therefore the number of MNers who could register their concern about the issue) was censorship and silencing.

My post was gone in minutes and with no deletion message I wasn't quite sure what had happened.

Oh, the irony. 🤐

Yes please Eleanor.

Mumsnet should probably introduce a separate gender subsection to feminist chat to encourage back those women who don't think feminism is all about one issue.

This is like the whole 'MN should have created a Dadsnet' and 'there should be a Men's Hour on radio 4, it's not fair' thing. Take a look at the archives of feminist chat. There really weren't hordes of ardent feminists dying to talk about stuff, it was a very quiet place of a very few people.

Redshoeblueshoe · 05/02/2020 19:19

Yes Eleanor and thanks

StealthPolarBear · 05/02/2020 19:22

Aargh missed thus entirely

StealthPolarBear · 05/02/2020 19:36

Her response to the question about men in a women's prison is a disgrace. She wasn't evasive. She just didn't get it.

eleanorscottarchaeology.com/els-blog/2020/2/5/emily-thornberrys-mumsnet-webchat-amp-the-childrens-safeguarding-inquiry-not-worth-a-mention

It's a short read.

Very happy to make amendments as necessary.

Redshoeblueshoe · 05/02/2020 19:46

Excellent article Eleanor Wine

Datun · 05/02/2020 19:46

I don't understand the logic of how, when she was younger, she campaigned that women could do anything, be anything, and weren't 'lesser' men...

...but now times have changed

and isn't that dandy

???

ClosdesMouches · 05/02/2020 19:50

Another excellent piece, thank you Eleanor

ScrimshawTheSecond · 05/02/2020 19:55

She had a hard time growing up, but now she's fine, so too bad for anyone else that is now finding themselves at the sharp end, is that it, Datun?

EleanorScott · 05/02/2020 19:57

There's a whole book to be had from these webchats. But I'm supposed to be writing at the moment about historical miscarriages of justice involving women. Then I get distracted by MN and incensed by children's safeguarding lapses.

Cuntysnark · 05/02/2020 19:58

Great article. Hope it is read by Westminster people. Our numbers are growing and they really need to start taking note.

Thelnebriati · 05/02/2020 20:08

I'm stunned at her answers to the questions about women in prison, and freedom of speech.
Is 'thats a lovely bag, blink if you can't talk' a suitable question for a web chat?

NeurotrashWarrior · 05/02/2020 20:16

Fab article Eleanor.

I'm reeling from the question evading.

She gaslit throughout.

Great article, Eleanor and I love your blog Wine

I read your 'Mumsnet hands Penny Morduant her arse' blog at the time Wink

EleanorScott · 05/02/2020 20:23

Thanks @theflushedzebra. My political blog sees me run screaming through rippling and rotting fields of Lib Dems, Conservatives and Labour. I left politics as an independent.
