Many of the comments below Janice Turner's excellent piece make reference to the meeting between Owen Jones and the admirable Nimco Ali on the Victoria Derbyshire programme last week (www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000c61c/victoria-derbyshire-10122019 from 29 minutes if you haven't seen it). Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere but I need to rant.

A white, middle class, Oxbridge-educated man hectoring and ranting at a black immigrant woman who underwent FGM about how bad his life is because he gets called 'bum boy', how he suffered by growing up under a Conservative government (he was 12 in 1997 when Labour came to power, so he's lying), implying that he knows all about the working classes because some of his friends grew up on council estates when Nimco Ali actually did grow up on a council estate, and telling someone who escaped civil war in Somalia that Iraq 'is the defining war of our time'. Jesus the man is such an arse. The lack of self-awareness is just jaw-dropping.

Speaking as someone who really did grow up under a Tory goverment (being 7 when Thatcher got elected and not having the Tories leave power until you're 25: that's growing up under the Tories) one unexpected bit of schadenfreude from the past week has been watching all the Momentum kids freaking out about having a Tory government with a massive majority, which is nothing new to all of us supposedly irrelevant, middle-aged folks who've been warning of this for the past three or four years. Play with fire, kids, and you get burnt.

One thing that occurred to me however is that by the time the next election comes round in 2024, 'little' Owen Jones will be the grand old age of 40. Middle age comes to us all in the end.

That's the thing with Owen and friends, isn't it? No self awareness, and therefore no ability to notice when their narcissism is putting people off even when the putting people off has reached the point of mining towns voting Tory.
