Agreed. You can already see the “thickos brainwashed by the right-wing press” narrative elsewhere on MN, and implied in Corbyn’s own statements. It’s every bit as much the bloody Guardian and the behaviour of Labour activists on their own social media accounts that has turned voters off

GC, it’s quite incredible, isn’t it? Constituencies that have been Labour for a hundred years have gone Conservative. Labour needs to really examine its myriad failures, but the instinct of many Labour supporters is just to double down on insulting voters. Owen Jones is a liability as his momentum crew, Seamus Milne and the entire Guardian cabaret. It’s excellent news that Swinson has lost though. I think that will highlight the GC issue.

merrymouse · 13/12/2019 09:06

He really is a liability.

Even if he genuinely believes his argument that the t-shirt was justified in context because it was a gay bar (Confused), he still blasted it all over his twitter feed, where there is no context.

merrymouse · 13/12/2019 09:10

Just read whole thread and seen the response to Helen Lewis from Ruby Tuesday. So there was no context to justify the t-shirt.

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 13/12/2019 09:20

no, no I haven't.

Plenty of enjoyable sex with plenty of men, for the only reason anyone should, because both of you find it mutually pleasurable.

I'm sorry you've been so damaged by something in your past, or so groomed by sex possie lefty dude bros (now, whywould they do a thing like that, I wonder?) that you now see it as purely transactional.

But you're worth more than that.

Absolutely. Owen and his mates have spent years telling potential voters to fuck off by screaming GAMMON and TERF at them. And what do you know? They happily fucked off. Not a stupid decision. People left an abusive relationship.

And, like all abusers, they will never admit it.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/12/2019 10:02

How on earth does it being in a gay bar make it ok? A woman giving a BJ is performing a het act. Confused

Needmoresleep · 13/12/2019 10:04

Presumably we are the "thickos".

Not surprising decision making for so many, including many in former Labour heartlands, was F* You.

(And by you, I include Swinson, Lily Madigan, Adrian Harrop, Jolyon Maugham, OJ, Jameela Jamil and, and, and.)

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/12/2019 10:19

He described it as a queer bar, not a gay bar, IIRC. I suspect that means anyone can go there as long as they buy into identity politics.

Beamur · 13/12/2019 10:22

If Labour want any chance at all of winning another election they need to take a look around and actually reflect the majority, not the minority.
The T* and gammon attitudes have to go. If you refuse to engage in any critical thinking about why people are taking what seems to be an extreme view, then you aren't going to address them properly. If you just dismiss those concerns as stupidity or bigotry people will take their votes elsewhere.

GCAcademic · 13/12/2019 10:25

Yes, that and “fuck off Red Tory”, “Fuck off, Tory Scum” to anyone left of centre. Oh, hang on, you want my vote now? Sorry, I’m still busy fucking off, as requested.

AnyFucker · 13/12/2019 10:35

That man really needs to grow the fuck up.

Lang and GC
Absolutely agree. It’s part of the totalitarian tendency that seems to dominate the left at the moment. Demonizing voters and the whole Guardian/momentum thing just doesn’t translate well beyond Twitter. I have been baffled by this since the Brexit vote to be honest.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 13/12/2019 12:15

Wholly agree. I'm leftist and would say Labour are my natural home, as well as having the most sensible and grounded manifesto. But the shouting, insults and insufferable self righteousness over the last few years have suggested to me how people could be tempted to vote against them just to force a bit of humility. (I'm in Scotland, so the point is moot - Labour are dead here).

ScrimshawTheSecond · 13/12/2019 12:17

I would say social media bubbles and the very efficiently manipulated media have a big part to play in it. Reading outwith one's friends views, reading other papers etc, is a bit like having a bucket of cold water over the head at first. Subsequently, it becomes second nature.

GCAcademic · 13/12/2019 12:23

Here is an excellent Twitter thread on this by a working-class woman:

That's brilliant, GC, thanks.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 13/12/2019 12:42

I hope Owen Jones is proud of doing his bit to stop Labour getting elected.

Goosefoot · 13/12/2019 12:55

I've been trying to have this conversation with a friend of mine, and it's frustrating, she really just doesn't get it. And she's not awful, she's really just a nice older middle class women who works in a church does all kinds of good works and has a very quiet life and doesn't see any of this kind of behaviour because she doesn't go to places where it happens. But as far as she is concerned, whatever anyone's concerns about the Labour party or any other party were, if you voted Conservative you must be a insularist and bigot, because that is the big picture.

GCAcademic · 13/12/2019 14:16

Goosefoot - I had precisely that discussion this morning with the husband when he started on about the right-wing press. He doesn’t get it. He’s a bloody Guardian reader, though.

GCAcademic · 13/12/2019 14:17

As a thank you, Boris should send him a big crate of champagne to swill with his dick-sucking socialism.

The woman in the pic needs to wise up, big time.

ChattyLion · 13/12/2019 15:53

Great post Barbara and thanks for the twitter link GC- her analysis is perfect

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 13/12/2019 16:28

I'd feel very sorry for the young woman in the photo if she wasn't doing so much harm to other women. No, love, we haven't all sucked cocks when we didn't want to as payment for something. That's not the way things have to be. If you genuinely choose that life for yourself than I can't stop you, but I absolutely will try to stop you forcing it on other women and girls.

Owen Jones, otoh, is older and should know better by his age. On this and indeed many other issues. Owen, if you're reading, know that you personify the reasons people who're natural Labour voters didn't feel able to vote Labour this time, and as long as people like you are the public face of Labour they're unlikely to win an election any time soon. Corbyn is stepping down, maybe some of his admirers should follow his example for the good of the party.

StillWeRise · 13/12/2019 18:59
