Ru Paul's Drag Race FOI request?

WineIsMyCarb · 15/11/2019 20:54

Given that the BBC does not allow 3rd party advertisers, is an FOI request the right way to go about finding out if the headline slot on BBC iPlayer for RuPaul's Drag Race is paid for? Have had wine, am cross. Sick of the fucking sight of him. (Follows previous thread about iplayer not having an algorithm and others' about drag being misogynistic in large parts).

Ru's an absolute legend it's the best bloody thing on BBC in ages!

DryHeave · 16/11/2019 06:32

They’ve done a very heavy marketing push for it - including having Michelle Visage on Strictly.

NotTerfNorCis · 16/11/2019 20:40

Yeah I agree! I've been watching stuff on IPlayer a lot recently and for weeks that image from Drag Race has been on the main page - the one IPlayer reverts to when another programme has finished. I could understand if it was for a day or so but why is the damn thing still there? I have zero interest in Drag Race! (Not sure if I'm allowed to say what I think of the image.)

MockersthefeMANist · 16/11/2019 20:45

iplayer is going the way of BBC effing Sounds, there to tell you what you want to watch rather than let you watch what you want to.

It's all part of the remorseless takeover of the world by the first generation not allowed to play outdoors.

Blossom28 · 16/11/2019 20:51

It’s not misogynistic. They are men putting on a performance, they are not claiming to be women or to be better than real women. It’s funny, lighthearted and entertaining. And guess what, if you don’t like it, don’t watch it!
It must be hard getting through life being Permanently offended 🙄

NotTerfNorCis · 16/11/2019 20:59

Got no intention of watching it, which is why I don't like seeing that image every time I finish watching something else on IPlayer. The BBC has lots of other popular programmes - why not headline on them as well? Switch it about a bit?

theflushedzebra · 16/11/2019 21:05

They are men putting on a performance, they are not claiming to be women or to be better than real women.

None of us here are permanently offended Grin - tell that to the people calling police on women for expressing their political opinion.

However, the "performance" of womanhood, or femaleness, or glamour, or whatever you claim it to be, is highly misogynistic. Even if you enjoy watching it - it's still derogatory to women.

HandsOffMyRights · 16/11/2019 21:11

They are not claiming to be women

Yet the tagline for the show is 'may the best woman win' Confused

I genuinely cannot see much difference between most drag acts and blackface. and if you can't see that using language like 'Slapper' 'slag' and other dergatory and highly sexualised names are offensive, then you must have been living under a rock. and that is without mentioning the implications that female bodies and genitalia are disgusting.

Wome used to be hihly supportive of gay men, and many of us 'tolerated' drag, whilst finding it offensive - in the name of brotherhood/sisterhood. But since so many gay men have thrown women under the bus, that is no longer the case. We're saying ita s we see it.

The response of many gay men has been one of the the biggest disappointments to me, and i'm sure to lots of other women. and that is why the new LGB Alliance has been set up.

theflushedzebra · 16/11/2019 21:33

Hear hear, JustHadtathought, I cannot see how it is different to laughing along with the B&W Minstrell show.

2Rebecca · 16/11/2019 22:17

I can understand some men wanting to dress up in glamorous dresses and wear make up. I think it's a shame the main way they can do that is through drag so the have to tuck their penises, wear fake boobs and pretend to be women. Glam rock was a much better idea.

Justhadathought · 16/11/2019 22:22

Personally, I see many overtly camp gay men as being almost possessed by a 'negative feminine shadow', hence all of the bitchiness, and negative and hateful stereotypes.

CantstandmLMs · 16/11/2019 22:59

I have many friends in drag who are just the loveliest people. They really do become their persona when in drag. It bloody hurts me when people who don't understand slag them off. You haven't a clue. Stop being offended by something you don't understand. There's more to worry about in life than men being queens.

OccasionalKite · 16/11/2019 23:18

Just not interested in porky men in bad wigs, troweĺled-on makeup, and outre clothing. Good luck to them and all that, but I do not want to see this every time I log into the iPlayer. Not at all interested.

Birdsfoottrefoil · 16/11/2019 23:35

I agree with a PP; I think they spent so much money on this programme that they need to promote it heavily in order to get the viewing figures to justify it.

If so, then that is utter shit marketing. I have never ever in my life expressed any interest about porky men in bad wigs, trowelled-on makeup etc. But still, they are being shoved in my face each time I log on. Why?

Birdsfoottrefoil · 17/11/2019 00:27

Bake off hasn’t been marketed on the bbc for a few years. Be a bit stupid if they did given it is a channel 4 programme. The iPlayer doesn’t have ads.

OccasionalKite · 17/11/2019 00:43

Weĺl spotted, Birdsfoottrefoil, regarding Bake off.
But whenever I go to the BBC iPlayer, there is a banner across the top of thr page for the rupaul shite

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 17/11/2019 01:41

I agree! I'm loving the show.
I'm new to watching drag, but the programme is blatantly men who knows they are men but dressing as up as women.
"Gentlemen! Start your engines."
"May the best lady win!"
So what?!
They clearly say they're not so called real women.
In fact I think it takes a lot of skill to come up with some of the creativity on there, there's no way I'd be able to do make up like they do or half of the costumes!

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 17/11/2019 01:53

Reading this and wondering what banner you're seeing to see porky men in bad wigs?!
I mean, I have the Iplayer app on my phone and I watch it on there and yes there is a Drag Race UK banner when you log on to it which is what you must be referring to.
How the heck Ru Paul's mush or indeed physique can be referred to porky is beyond me lol.
Seeing as he's the only one you'll be seeing as you don't sound from your posts like you've ever actually watched an episode!
So your guess alone if so is where porky has come from Confused Grin

GrimDamnFanjo · 17/11/2019 02:12

"Fishy" from my previous thread - eventually I hope all society will move on and see drag for the woman hating entertainment it really is....

Bezalelle · 17/11/2019 04:59

It bloody hurts me when people who don't understand slag them off.

Yes, and it bloody hurts women to be ridiculed and mocked.

thefluffysideofgrey · 17/11/2019 07:56

This horror of drag is a new thing I think, it's just a backlash from the whole trans thing.

It does come across as a bit silly. Using fattest words like 'porky' doesn't help this 'cause' either.

Drag has been around for centuries- nobody objected until the trans thing.

Trewser · 17/11/2019 08:02

I don't watch it, but I know people who love it. I thought the UK version wasn't getting very good viewing figures?

I agree the algorithm is shit and annoying, I can watch Spiral, Guilt and Masterchef and next time I log in, not one of them comes up.
