Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Will this affect your vote?

Several people have posted interesting threads about the response of political parties to questions about how/if they will safeguard sex segregated spaces. Some of the responses to that question explicitly demonstrate where politicians are aligned when it comes to protecting recalcitrant women against a concerted attempt to force ‘gender neutrality’ on the public. Some of those responses have been quite eye opening. My question is this. How influential will this be on your vote?

Yes of course I will wait for the manifestos. It will probably be Election Day before I finally make up my mind - that's how desperate I am. Does that really need saying?

Dangerfloof · 12/11/2019 12:20

Why don't you all wait until each Party's manifestos come out
Because if I'm buying a sticker I want plenty of time for me to get paid and it to arrive. If when the actual manifesto comes out and has nothing for women or self Id all the way then I am prepared. If one party comes out with what I want then there will be other considerations so I may still need the sticker. If they all come out with what I want then I lose the money from buying a sticker. No great loss.

There's a surprising amount of people tutting at and shaming women who have decided to spoil their ballot paper in protest. Why should we be expected to put up and shut up when our rights are being removed? No way

Oh the drama. A couple of posters have pointed out spoiling your ballot paper is an empty, pointless gesture. There has been misunderstanding about spoilt papers. There was a post earnestly giving instructions on how to make sure you used the correct wording to make sure your spoiled ballot was "counted" (all ballot papers are counted)

Nobody has "tutted and shamed" you. Language like that is ridiculous unless your aim is to make sure you only get ful some agreement.

Dangerfloof · 12/11/2019 12:27

And Carol is at the shaming again.
Naughty women.

Exactly Wink

Floisme · 12/11/2019 13:45

Carol I can't help wondering what you're trying to achieve with your posts. If you're just after a full-throated, no-quarter-given row then crack on - been there, done that and it can be very satisfying.

But if you're actually trying to win people over to your thinking then this thread's been a bit of a car crash hasn't it?

I won't try and speak for anyone else but personally the reason I'm considering spoiling my ballot after 45 years of voting Labour is because I'm at the end of my tether. And I no longer think it's up to me to reach out to them. As far as I'm concerned, it's the party that has left me, not the other way round. I no longer even care that much whether spoilt ballots are counted. I simply cannot bring myself to vote for any party that shows so little respect for women.

You want me to reconsider? Then please go and find me some evidence that the party leadership (and that includes any centre / left party) is prepared to listen to what WPUK or Fair Play for Women are saying.

bellinisurge · 12/11/2019 14:18

Again, what @Floisme said.

Mner2019 · 12/11/2019 14:39

The two most likely to win here are Torys and Lib Dems. I wrote to my Lib Dem candidate yesterday to ask re his position on the GRA but have only had a holding email since then. I am torn between Lib Dem (remainer, especially if he is GC) and spoiling my paper...

There are alot more GC voices out there now than before. What about starting something on targetted on twitter so that we can forewarn them that we are not voting for parties that disregard our sex and tag the main parties, our local candidates etc?

Something succinct.. e.g. Get rapists out of women's prisons: #standupforwomen #sexnotgender

birdsdestiny · 12/11/2019 15:55

I agree with sunkisses view on the lib dems, it is not just self id with the lib dems, the thread of misogyny running through a lot of their policies is astonishing to behold.

andyoldlabour · 12/11/2019 16:10

If anyone is still thinking of voting Labour, just take a look at this.

🤐

Justhadathought · 12/11/2019 16:35

I'm not even sure what the Labour party is anymore.......it has fractured in so many ways and is now beyond hopeless.

So much antipathy out there for Jeremy Corbyn - from every direction. I'm hearing it everywhere. It has what has been allowed to flourish on his watch, and in his name...how did it come to this?

RuffleCrow · 12/11/2019 17:37

Carol, we've explained over and over again both the point and the meaning behind the gesture. Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it's not valid.

Needmoresleep · 12/11/2019 17:42

I have told DH I will divorce him if he votes LD. Luckily the local candidate seems very woke with a interest in protecting children by legalising drugs. He won't vote Corbyn, and the Tories inevitably put up a nonentity with a posh sounding name.

DH seems unsure whether I mean it.

In the meantime I have my pile of information ready to pounce on any unsuspecting LD. The Labour Party seems to have fought off nominating someone Momentum from Corbyn's office so we have a long standing local councillor and mother. She might be alright. I will quizz their representative.

RuffleCrow · 12/11/2019 17:43

I always wonder what Heather is one of. Actually i think i know.

Needmoresleep · 12/11/2019 17:55

Heather seems to live in a very small airtight bubble:

"Heather Peto Co-Chair of #LGBT+Labour #PeoplesVote
@heatherisone

alienating half the population? What the alt-right transphobes? They account for a tiny percentage of the population they just have a loud social media profile."

Trouble is we are electing a NATIONAL government. Lots of people with different views, who need to live, work and pay tax together. It is fine being sure you are right, but you don't get elected unless other people are convinced you are right, and capable of governing in a sensible way. She may think that only a tiny percentage are GC. First she is wrong. I think Stonewall research showed about 83%. Then you don't win elections by completely ignoring mainstream media such as the Times and Mail. It's fine that you don't agree with a whole lot of their editorials but some of the voters you want to reach will care about some of it.

In short you don't win arguments, and you certainly don't win elections, by dismissing and insulting people.

CeridwenTheWitch · 12/11/2019 17:59

Lol at that person describing us as 'alt right.' I voted for the Green Party in the last election, Labour before that. I'm vegetarian and a feminist. I couldn't be less 'alt right' if I tried! They can't stand the fact that regular people are questioning trans ideology.

Mner2019 · 12/11/2019 18:01

OMG. I have just seen who our Tory candidate is - Anthony Browne. Written a few racist articles in the past. Fucking hell. Between a rock and a hard place!

EndoplasmicReticulum · 12/11/2019 18:24

Well one choice has been removed from me as our Green candidate has stepped aside for the Lib Dem. I would have been more likely to vote Green than Lib Dem.

It's probably a waste of time worrying about it - in 2017 the Tory got more votes than everyone else put together anyway.

jamrollyolly · 12/11/2019 19:03

Could we try a last minute protest/ mass email as suggested by a previous poster, and then still sticker/spoil our ballots afterwards if necessary ?

I know there are clever women on here who could write an email that we could all click/ send to our local candidates. Our perhaps someone could contact the press before hand to raise their interest in a possible mass ballot- spoiling protest?

RuffleCrow · 12/11/2019 19:20

Lol at the 'if necessary'. I suspect mass emails like that would probably just be used for easy data harvesting of "wrong-thinkers" by the terfblocker brigade, just as our petitions have done in the past.

Dangerfloof · 12/11/2019 19:44

We could try, but I ain't using my normal email that has my actual name, and I dont think they will look at my proton mail. Plus wont we just be dismissed as a "quirky" few, by quirky I mean something else similar sounding.

jamrollyolly · 12/11/2019 20:22

Ruffle
I meant necessary for each voter, but it does read as wildly optimistic!

We may be ' quirky' but are we few?

andyoldlabour · 13/11/2019 08:34

I have not heard of a lot of these Labour politicians - would be MP's, so decided to Google Emily Brothers.
There are just too many unanswered questions, too many contradictions, that I feel I now live in a different World.

"She said that her ex-wife was very supportive and understanding, and that she had two great children, William and Victoria, who were very supportive."
"Her family are not, and they have broken their connections with her."
"She is openly lesbian."
