Oh, Sam. It's OK to be a feminine man. Just be patient and wait for the right partner.

This looks like the first steps towards transition to me, and I have a strong sense of foreboding. Sam sounds deeply unhappy.

Genuine question. Can someone tell me if "they" is their Hmm pronoun of choice...

1.because of having 2 "selves" - one male, one female, therefore being "plural", or both male and female.

Or 2. in the absence of a neutral pronoun?

Propertyofhood · 13/09/2019 17:44

Oh, I never thought of it as being the 'two personalities', I alway thought it was just trying to be a neutral pronoun.

AncientLights · 13/09/2019 17:53

Interesting though that Sam Smith found the London gay scene so upsetting - were violent & brutal the adjectives used? No wonder he'd run from it. But the scene surely isn't obligatory.

MockersthefeMANist · 13/09/2019 18:10

...maybe they thought he was a posh c**t son of a couple of bankers and bond-dealers who spent nearly a million quid promoting his career.

Not exactly Janis Joplin.

SimonJT · 13/09/2019 18:21

@AncientLights No of course the scene isn’t, it isn’t my thing really. However I can’t safely hold my boyfriends hand, or even physically walk too close to him in a ‘straight’ bar or club. Lots of people don’t like it, but they can’t safely be themselves elsewhere.

Micaela64 · 13/09/2019 18:21

Will them be handing back their "best male artist" awards? Hmm

MrsWednesdayteatime · 13/09/2019 18:26

So in 2019 Sam Smith was nominated for "best British MALE solo artist" at The Brits, (didn't win George Ezra did)

Would Smith turn down future sexed nominations and wins? Record sales always get boosted by nominations and wins 💰💰💰

TopBitchoftheWitches · 13/09/2019 18:36

What is it with these attention seeking men?

Whatisthisfuckery · 13/09/2019 18:37

Just had BBC 6music on. 6:30 news comes on and the final story was, Singer Sam Smith has announced that he’s had enough of his war with gender and from now on wants to be referred to as they and them.’

Fucking hell BBC, you must be shitting us. That is newsworthy on a 3 minute long hourly bulletin?

hiphopchick · 13/09/2019 19:49

Booooooooring! 🙄

Haworthia · 13/09/2019 21:14

Ohhh, that a good point. I bet Sam won’t refuse any future award nominations in the “male” category because that doesn’t reflect his inner feelz.

Oh wait...

How long will it be before there’s a male, female and non-binary category introduced somewhere (which will be won by a man)?

OkayGo · 13/09/2019 21:17

What I don’t understand is how Sam can say that he thinks ‘like a woman’. What exactly do women think like? How would he know? I can’t roll my eyes enough at the pronoun thing, it’s just self indulgent wank.

tequilasunrises · 13/09/2019 21:19

I have never really given much consideration to the whole gender fluidity/non binary movement as it hasn’t affected me. But I read the Sam Smith article in the DM. I’m all for people expressing themselves however they like and such but am a bit wtf at him ‘thinking like a woman in my head at times’.

Seriously what does that mean? I’d love for him to expand on that because if being a woman is all about nice flowery thoughts and girly outfits etc then I don’t think I’m w women at all!

tequilasunrises · 13/09/2019 21:19

@OkayGo definite cross post lol!!

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 13/09/2019 21:37

What a load of tedious self-indulgent wankery. As if there aren't enough ACTUAL problems in the world which warrant energy and attention, we have to read (on the BBC "so woke it hurts" website, ffs) the bleatings of some confused non-binarychild (not as catchy as manchild but there we go) who thinks we should give a shit.

OkayGo · 13/09/2019 21:48

Haha @tequilasunrises great minds or women minds?

duckme · 13/09/2019 22:04

I can't read that article. I mean it actually doesn't make sense. How are children being taught to read nowadays?

Doyoumind · 13/09/2019 23:08

OkayGo and tequilasunrises you might have been put off the feminism boards in the past but there are a lot of women here who think the same thing and have a lot to say on the subject. It's well worth hanging around Smile

OkayGo · 13/09/2019 23:13

@doyoumind thanks! I was a member of MN for a long time but had to take a break when my MH took a slide and deleted my account, but I decided to join again because I got so irritated seeing this in the news that I had to check what the feminism boards were saying and it’s pretty much everything I thought but much, much more articulate :)

rabbitwoman · 13/09/2019 23:51

Think like a woman? When a man says they think like a woman they mean:

"Oh, I am fabulous, I am strong, I need to get my gel nails done. This dress I am wearing looks so hot and the fabric feels so good against my skin. They're all looking at me because I am so hot. Can't wait to go to my friends house tonight, we are going to do facials and have a fun pillow fight, then talk about make up and boys."

That's a fantasy of being a woman. Does any man really understand what a woman thinks;

"Ah, mustn't forget to buy laundry detergent on my way home from the gym. Sheesh, my underwire bra is digging in!!! Need to retouch my grey hairs tonight, could pluck my chin whilst I am at it. Kids need picking up early today - shit! Did I get a babysitter for Saturday? Not the mil, she lets them stay up too late, but I don't want to hurt her feelings by telling her that...... I'll just pretend my friend offered first if she asks, and I had better make sure I get her some perfume or something for her birthday, need to find out what she likes, no point asking hubby though, he won't even remember it's her birthday ....... Oh! It's a bit dark and lonely down here, better get my keys out...... Busting for the loo again. That's the third time in an hour!!! Bloody pelvic floor ......."

Is that how you think, Sam Smith!!???

Saltovinegar · 14/09/2019 06:50

I wonder if "they" will remember "they" are actually a man if "they" gets prostate or testicular cancer.

Not even sure that sentence makes any sense!

JellySlice · 14/09/2019 07:08

From the BBC article: I hope you can see me like I see myself now.

I see you through my eyes, my perceptions. Not yours.

I am not a participant in your fantasy.

WoollyMummoth · 14/09/2019 07:13

Brilliant posts rabbit woman and saltovinegar!!!

They/ them gives me massive rage! He’s a self obsessed arse. And can someone get him an inhaler for that god awful breathy singing.

StealthPolarBear · 14/09/2019 07:19

As a pp mentioned the gender neutral pronouns are it/its. I might start using them.

TimeLady · 14/09/2019 07:44

Looks like 'it' can be legitimately used Wink
