Is there actually a rule which says this position has to go to a member of that community? I can imagine there could be circumstances where there might not be such a person to fill that role and they would still want someone in the position. It's a little different I thought than the woman's officer position which explicitly was about getting more women into government.

But I'm not in the UK so I could easily have the wrong end of the stick.

I would be very doubtful of this guy anyway. Complaining that he lost to someone white is pretty shocking and says something about his mindset. And I wonder how shit he has to be to have lost his position to a straight guy anyway, the fact is if you are incompetent or a jerk, no one owes you a job.

While I do admit to enjoying a little schadenfreude it is very worrying that someone who was presenting as a heterosexual male got elected to this post.

Is it though? I mean, it might be. But how many homosexual people were eligible to stand? It's a relatively small demographic if you take the traditional meaning, it's possible there may have been only the fellow who is complaining who was willing to do the job.
