Clarification on Women only spaces

Hiya, I've always identified as a feminist, I'm fairly new to Mumsnet and before joining had read about trans rights and had got the impression that any challenges were transphobic and bigoted.

I can see now that, as with most things, the issues are far more nuanced than Twitter would lead us to believe. I can see issues with women's rights, self identification, shutting down debate, etc and am starting to understand other points of view.

I guess for me the complications arise when things get personal. I have some trans friends, both MTF and FTM, who have fully transitioned (as adults over 30), had all the surgery, got certificates the whole thing. What would the general consensus be on access to single sex spaces for them?

My friend may not have grown up as a girl/woman, but has made every effort to become one because she has always felt this way, she may not have faced the same challenges as me growing up, but she has faced other challenges and discrimination. I feel like she absolutely belongs in women only spaces and would hate to think that other people see her as a threat.

JackyHolyoake

so what does real equality mean to you ?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/04/2019 18:31

why go left or right when straight forward is a shorter way?

I'm going to get this made into a fridge magnet.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 14/04/2019 18:31

I'm still none the wiser I'm afraid.

who is this 'we' that campaigns on the fact that it's thrust upon them? and what's being thrust upon them?

your husband was once given a towel? does this mean I have to take a shit in the next cubical to my male boss if he decides to transition? I'm not really managing to join the dots here.......

LangCleg · 14/04/2019 18:33

Is that like thrusting your way into perfectly productive conversations with a load of old bollocks? That thrusting?

JackyHolyoake · 14/04/2019 18:35

so what does real equality mean to you ?

Equality: the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, or opportunities.

Equity: the quality of being fair and impartial.

Why would any female want equality with males in our misogynistic, patriarchal world?

well there's nativism,..
and then there's NATIVISM.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 14/04/2019 18:35

It's nice to get a chance to see the wording of the relevant EA section. I find that so many clever wise and funny people hang around here that it's rare that anything is wasted.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 14/04/2019 18:37

well there's nonsense

and then there's NONSENSE

the M&S version, far superior

Shaboopy · 14/04/2019 18:37

JackyHolyoake

compromise isnt in your repertoire is it.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/04/2019 18:38

Should that have been ATAVISM?

Closely resembling an amoeba, maybe?

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 14/04/2019 18:38

Why would any female want equality with males in our misogynistic, patriarchal world?

yes indeed. and vice versa. how is equality to be achieved? currently 98% of sexual violence is committed by men. should women be upping their game in this area?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/04/2019 18:39

You hum it and I am sure Jackie will give dancing it a bloody good go Grin

KatvonHostileExtremist · 14/04/2019 18:39

Is this some sort of code ?

sackrifice · 14/04/2019 18:40

Shaboopy - don't start on our Jacky mate.

Equality would mean women killing 2-3 men they know a week.

That is not what we want.

What we want is for men to just stop killing 2-3 women a week.

As I said earlier, you don't understand a bloody word of it do you?

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 14/04/2019 18:40

Is anyone else wondering if this is some sort of dada-ist modern art project?

sackrifice · 14/04/2019 18:40

You hum it and I am sure Jackie will give dancing it a bloody good go

I fucking love you.

JackyHolyoake · 14/04/2019 18:41

compromise isn't in your repertoire is it

When it comes to the safety, wellbeing, privacy and dignity of females of course there can be no compromise in relation to males. That is why females have additional protective human rights.

MenuPlant · 14/04/2019 18:43

My read of that last post is that segregated sex facilities havemade it tricky for that posters OH to look after their disabled child when out

So campaign for better facilities for parents / people with disabilities / people with carers

Campaigned for men to be allowed in the womens bogs feels like a weird solution

Is it because a major outcome of trans activism is that many toilets for disabled use have been turned into anybody toilets and people are being encouraged to use them if they have blue hair.

That's on them not on feminists.

It's women who have got better family / child faciltiies and given women have most caring responsibilities I'd be surprised it wasn't mainly them who got improvements in accessible facilities / disabled facilities.

And then this lot come along and reverse it all.

Such progress.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 14/04/2019 18:44

compromise isn't in your repertoire is it

just to be serious for a moment (although why the fuck I'm bothering I'm not really sure).

there is no 'compromise' on people's sex. they're either male or female. full stop the end. They might wish they weren't, and that's sad, but it changes nothing.

Shaboopy · 14/04/2019 18:45

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly

its under reported, under researched and underprosecuted!

Datun · 14/04/2019 18:46

compromise isn't in your repertoire is it

Anyone who says this about women's rights means compliance.

It's easy mistake to make when you can't communicate for shit.

Shaboopy · 14/04/2019 18:46

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly

a bit hitleresque really!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/04/2019 18:50

Fuck! Now I am singong a nifty combination of songs in a relentless earworm of Men at Work and The Producers!

BettyDuMonde · 14/04/2019 18:50

Amazed it took 11 pages before someone mentioned Hitler.

This thread should be nominated for Mumsnet Classics!

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 14/04/2019 18:51

Shaboopy, you're not making any sense I'm afraid.

it's hitlereque to understand that sex is binary? any other facts which make you like hitler when you know them?

pythagoras theorem? asparagus makes your wee smell? that it's 384,400 km to the moon?
