New target: Dr Louise Moody at York University. Deaf, lesbian, gender critical and precariously employed junior academic. She makes an innocuous joke about LM’s announcement on twitter about ‘coming out’ as a lesbian (ie being heterosexual). Cue a swift complaint to York asking for Louise to be fired, insinuating that LM is a student there themselves. Followed by lots of toady support by mainly males asking for this person to be ‘dealt with’. Including a female academic called Dr Jo Grady who uses terf-blocker and thinks it’s really cool to throw a disabled lesbian who is precariously employed under the bus. She has also commanded York to deal with the situation.

This is getting out of hand. Solidarity with Louise. I hope you’re okay. I actually blame people like Dr Grady more than LM, who clearly has serious issues. But how you can publicly call for someone’s sacking for this when you know what academia is like and how difficult it is for women, POC and disabled people is breathtaking. This is a lesbian woman who takes issue with a heterosexual male appropriating her marginalised status. Same as POC would presumably take issue if a white man started talking about his struggles being trans-black.

I feel in the table and discussion that they are taking a pretty strong stance simply by labeling the preferences of lesbian women for trans men as "incongruent" with their sexual orientation. They could have described it in neutral terms. Instead they are implying that lesbian women are acting contrary to how they should be expected to act given their sexual orientation.

I agree, and it shows how committed to pomo trans ideology they are.

tirisfalpumpkin · 04/01/2019 16:16

Didn’t realise OJ had backtracked. Iirc he flipped his shit and said asking if he would perform cunnilingus on a trans man was ‘homophobic’. (Which, in other circumstances, would be quite a homophobic question to ask a gay man - although most gay men are not insisting quite as hard as OJ that lesbians aren’t allowed boundaries.)

Just thinking about the possibilities. That one ‘I am a man’ thought also irrevocably changes the sexualities of all your exes, because after all, if you ID as a man now, you were always a man, and it was a man in all those past relationships. New protected characteristics for all these suddenly-bi people.

userschmoozer · 04/01/2019 16:17

Queer and other postmodern theorists believe that if enough people believe something is true then that this literally becomes true.

Donald Trump follows a bizarre cult that believes that if you think something is true and believe it hard enough you make it come true and thats why its ok to be wealthy.

Knicknackpaddyflak · 04/01/2019 16:23

The actual meaning of gay, lesbian and heterosexual seems to have become diluted.

I think that's top down effort to work on diluting, blurring and obfuscating the actual meaning of those terms to serve a political agenda rather than gay, lesbian and het people making changes in their sexual preferences.

There is a regular poster who often pops onto threads about lesbians not wanting sex with men to mention their dozens of friends who just love having sex with men and that lesbianism is a much broader church these modern times. It's like a fashionable friend who likes to call themselves vegan in conversation to people while necking hamburgers. Call yourself whatever you want, although it's a bit weird to cling to an inaccurate label rather than just go to a perfectly equally acceptable one. Call yourself a unicorn or a teapot or whatever you want. Saying it doesn't make it true.

Lesbians are biological women solely attracted to other biological women. Liking cock and male bodied people is great, it just makes you bisexual or straight. Why would you want to obfusticate and lie about that?

Unless it's because you have a personal agenda of gently training women that its perfectly normal for/all good lesbians do cock like good girls when told, and everybody who's anybody is doing it. And that the concept of biological sex should be muddled and blurred out because reality is so damned inconvenient.

Yes - it was a hypothetical scenario. It was part of a wider survey on relationships so not just about trans dating. Hard to know if the 120 who said yes were being totally honest but it is still not many out of the wider sample.

I see what you mean - plus it is not incongruent to say you would date a trans man if you see them as having been born a woman (which they don't seem to consider). We all take different messages from the same research but given that a lot of the discussion seems to imply that lesbians are more likely not to want to date a trans person, it was good to read some actual research

I remember a time when I would see things like this, experience strong cognitive dissonance with my belief that TWAW, then not knowing what to do with it... turning off my brain and dismissing the writer as a TRANSPHOBIC BIGOT.

sigh

Yes. I think that is exactly what happens.

This.

Some are born with protected characteristics, some achieve protected characteristics, and some have protected characteristics thrust upon 'em.

merrymouse · 04/01/2019 17:24

It is completely ridiculous to claim that 'coming out' to your parents as gay is the same if you are attracted to people of the opposite sex, for practical reasons if nothing else:

  • Not illegal to have heterosexual sex anywhere in the world
  • Heterosexual marriages are recognised everywhere
  • No religion cares about heterosexual sex as long as you are married (and see second point).
  • Possible to conceive grandchild with partner
  • No danger in dark dystopian future where women can't work or own property (some parts of the world now, Britain in 1800's), that lesbian daughter will have to marry man just to put roof over head.
Ereshkigal · 04/01/2019 17:25

I see the belief/meme that TWAW, in the face of no convincing evidence that they are and plenty of demonstrations that they are not, as a collective mania.

Ereshkigal · 04/01/2019 17:26

Exactly merrymouse. It's pure appropriation.

VickyEadie · 04/01/2019 17:31

Quite. I think the notion that a father who has known his male child since birth (complete with male tackle that said father has seen and knows is there), who has probably known that the son also has a girlfriend - being told 'I like girls' by the son - is any sort of "coming out" is quite ridiculous.

SirVixofVixHall · 04/01/2019 17:43

Re the coming out thing, it is also extremely insulting to men and women for whom coming out to parents was a frightening prospect.
I have a gay friend who will be 60 this year. He never told his father that he was gay, he is enjoying a freedom now with his sexuality that was impossible for him as a young man . There is much more acceptance now of homosexuality than when he was young.
That is also why I find it so hard that so many gay men are behind people like Madigan. Do they not have older friends ? Don’t they know that for some people coming out ended all relations with their family ? That people married just to avoid the stigma of being gay ?
To appropriate that experience is a disgusting thing to do. To pretend that as a male person, telling your Dad that you have a girlfriend, is anything like what so many homosexual people went through, and are still going through, is a terrible thing to do. Why is LM not being widely condemned for this ?
Is obviously a lie anyway, i’m sure that Madigan’s Dad knew about a girlfriend.

nauticant · 04/01/2019 17:51

Well, this thread is a bit delete-tastic. I got one deleted for posting a quote attributed to Mark Twain.

SirVixofVixHall · 04/01/2019 17:53

Mark Twain ? Goodness. Sorry I missed that.
Maybe we all need to comment through the medium of literary classics.

nauticant · 04/01/2019 17:56

I'm a proper edgelord me what with my handful of Twain, Shaw, and Churchill quotes.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 04/01/2019 18:18

Goodness nauticant what was the quote??

Was it the rat on a string one...just say yes or no

I know you can't requote Grin

nauticant · 04/01/2019 18:25

I would paraphrase it as:

Don't let others define the way you engage in an argument because you'll end up engaging in a way that suits them rather than you.

Lucky not to get banned over that I suppose.

Katvonbatshit · 04/01/2019 18:28

Apparently LM's dad is friends with LM on Facebook. If they bang on about chasing "cute" girls as much as they do on twitter, I'm sure LM's dad realised that they were straight.
