New target: Dr Louise Moody at York University. Deaf, lesbian, gender critical and precariously employed junior academic. She makes an innocuous joke about LM’s announcement on twitter about ‘coming out’ as a lesbian (ie being heterosexual). Cue a swift complaint to York asking for Louise to be fired, insinuating that LM is a student there themselves. Followed by lots of toady support by mainly males asking for this person to be ‘dealt with’. Including a female academic called Dr Jo Grady who uses terf-blocker and thinks it’s really cool to throw a disabled lesbian who is precariously employed under the bus. She has also commanded York to deal with the situation.

This is getting out of hand. Solidarity with Louise. I hope you’re okay. I actually blame people like Dr Grady more than LM, who clearly has serious issues. But how you can publicly call for someone’s sacking for this when you know what academia is like and how difficult it is for women, POC and disabled people is breathtaking. This is a lesbian woman who takes issue with a heterosexual male appropriating her marginalised status. Same as POC would presumably take issue if a white man started talking about his struggles being trans-black.

It doesn't read at all like mockery to me. Louise Moody is a lesbian. She's showing up the absurdity of a male-bodied person seeking plaudits for their bravery in 'coming out' to their family as attracted to female-bodied people. She's calling out the appropriation of a struggle that is not LM's

Excellent point

AngryAttackKittens · 03/01/2019 10:15

but she's clearly being goady

Is being goady a sackable offense?

(Pretending for a moment that this whole concept even applies on Twitter, which generally functions as a sort of online prose boxing ring anyway, and the fact that if Moody is goady then so is Madigan.)

ScipioAfricanus · 03/01/2019 10:20

The misleading, manipulative behaviour of LM implying LM is studying at York in that tweet is appalling. Clearly some of the men hurrying to grab their pitchforks and attack Dr Moody haven’t bothered to find out if that is true.

‘Make me wish I wasn’t me anymore’ is more of this emotional manipulation. An academic at a different university not teaching you has no duty of care to you. The world does not have a duty of care to everyone’s feelings.

Yeahnahyeah · 03/01/2019 10:21

To those who don't know the insurance and outs of LM's history, Louise's tweet does not read well, I think.

Yeahnahyeah · 03/01/2019 10:22

Gah! *Ins and outs, not insurance!

Qcng · 03/01/2019 10:25

LM isn't a LP Women's officer anymore.
They don't even go to York Uni. WTF is going on.

Qcng · 03/01/2019 10:28

Her posts don't read any worse than most Tweets. At least it's the truth. Unlike most of LMs.

starcrossedseahorse · 03/01/2019 10:31

I read in their NY message (I think it was there) that LM is claiming to be a LP Women's Officer - where is this? Another lie?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 03/01/2019 10:32

Can we choose different initials for the two LM's please? It's all getting rather confusing!

Datun · 03/01/2019 10:37

To those who don't know the insurance and outs of LM's history, Louise's tweet does not read well, I think.

Yeah, but that's the problem isn't it? My initial reaction was uh oh.

Which means that the deliberate, goady, targeting bullying of women is working.

And it needs to be called out.

AngryAttackKittens · 03/01/2019 10:40

LMf and LMm?

Redshoeblueshoe · 03/01/2019 10:45

LML & LMNL

ApplesinmyPocket · 03/01/2019 10:54

LM loves to shout I AM A LESBIAN as often as possible - right from the original 'this gal is gay!' and then delights spitefully to take revenge on anyone who calls them out on it.

LM must know they are not a lesbian - gleefully malicious and taunting rather than just plain deluded I believe - but the problem is, in the current climate it's not possible to call out this nonsense without repercussions, because at some unspecified point the mantra TWAW got adopted by TRAs, their allies, and at least some of the unaffected public.

Nicknamesalltaken · 03/01/2019 11:00

I really don’t know why anyone bothers about anything that LM says.

Really doesn’t warrant anyone’s time of day. A massive eyeroll in response should be sufficient, and the grown ups can carry on talking.

NotTerfNorCis · 03/01/2019 11:13

Madigan claimed that Louise was 'bullying h* relentlessly '. Now it seems there was just one comment, which was completely fair. Lily 'came out as gay' but is in fact, logically, heterosexual?

Needmoresleep · 03/01/2019 11:14

FFS Jo Grady:

www.sheffield.ac.uk/management/staff/jgrady/index

Earlier tweets of hers ask people to stop demanding that UCU staff are fired. Why on earth should someone who is an Emplyment specialist, and who has direct experience of social media campaigns, be diving into something she knows little about, based on a LM tweet.

What is going on in our Universities.

EverlastingGodstopper · 03/01/2019 11:24

Hi All,

THANK YOU for the supportive comments!

I am not employed on a permanent contract no. Academic terms can be confusing to both those in and out of universities! I am a research associate now, and had to give up my proper postdoc in the summer when a raging case of hyperacusis and 24/7 constant auditory hallucinations set in (a side-effect of being deaf!) which made it impossible to go anywhere. After living in my bedroom for three months and having what can only be described as a breakdown because of it all, I resolved to get better, and to that end, I'm still 'doing' philosophy and will see what happens if and when I get a few publications under my belt :)

Though these days, I'm starting to think one can do more good out of a university rather than in it, but that's another story ....

Now, when I read Madigan's tweet, I was appalled - as I often am - at the appropriation of experiences that are not their own. I am not doubting that Madigan has had struggles, but coming to terms with being a lesbian is not one of them. I think of young girls hearing this stuff and berating themselves for not being - try as they might - same gender attracted. Until my mid-twenties, I dated men as there was still a part of me that thought something had gone 'wrong', and that it was perhaps a side-effect of sexual abuse. It took me a while to understand that my sexuality is a GOOD thing, something to be proud of, and I'm going to do my part in calling out those who have no business appropriating our shared experiences, history, and culture.

The worst that could come of the present 'campaign' is to have my official affiliation removed, I suppose. Am I worried? No. Not really. I will continue what I'm doing quite happily, although of course, support is always welcomed.

Louise

AncientLights · 03/01/2019 11:26

Madigan's tweet does read as though Madigan is a York student, but this could be due to Madigan's careless use of English. Madigan is not terribly good at writing a decent sentence in English.

AngryAttackKittens · 03/01/2019 11:28

Keep your chin up, Louise. I'm sure Madigan will move on to the next existential ego threat soon!

AncientLights · 03/01/2019 11:30

Louise I think we may have met in a Leeds pub before Christmas. Whatever, sending you my love and wishing you the strength to continue fighting the good fight. X

YetAnotherSpartacus · 03/01/2019 11:32

All the best Louise M! I totally agree with you that universities are weird places.

morningtoncrescent62 · 03/01/2019 11:32

What is going on in our Universities.

That was my thought too. OK, so if you take Madigan's tweet at face value you might think that they were a poor innocent first year student being relentlessly bullied by one of their teachers. But surely another academic should investigate a little bit further rather than pile into trial by twitter? And I gather that Jo Grady is an active trade unionist to boot - so if she really thought the tweet was transphobic I'd expect her to use the complaints procedures that unions have fought hard for rather than trash someone's reputation in the public domain.

It would make me really happy if University of York were to reply with a public statement about freedom of thought/speech and enabling public debtate on transgenderism. If only.

AngryAttackKittens · 03/01/2019 11:35

It would make me full to the brim with glee if York Uni were to issue a tweet saying "As far as we can tell Lily Madigan is not and never has been a student at our university".

morningtoncrescent62 · 03/01/2019 11:37

Just seen your update, Louise.

After living in my bedroom for three months and having what can only be described as a breakdown because of it all, I resolved to get better, and to that end, I'm still 'doing' philosophy and will see what happens if and when I get a few publications under my belt

I'm so sorry to hear this happened to you, and I wish you all the best with your health and your work.
