Vice: how an online forum for moms became a toxic hotbed of transphobia

Thought people might be interested in this article. One thing that strikes me is the 'reducing women to their biology' argument. Don't transwomen 'know' they're not male because their body feels wrong? Then it is about biology isn't it? Otherwise why do they think they're female?

but home made coffee liqueur Waterparc!

top tip or what??

ILikeyourHairyHands · 06/12/2018 21:49

You may be right Hipsterfun, you probably are. But then you would be asking me to take an intellectually-biased position against the notion of a petit-bourgious. And that in itself is a form of intellectual snobbery which I don't buy into.

ABitCrapper · 06/12/2018 21:50

Ooh waterparc what were you trying to say? Was it about trans stuff or something else?

Waterparc · 06/12/2018 21:51

I’m over it now

R0wantrees · 06/12/2018 21:53

I've seen most recipies on the threads deliberately started by late-night MRAs /midnight misogynist/ GFs etc

Esker · 06/12/2018 21:55

The real treat of this article is the links it offers to other articles. This provided some interesting tips:

https://broadly.vice.com/enus/article/kzjnjm/how-to-be-trans-ally-tips?utmmsource=stylizedembedbroadly.vice.com&utmmcampaign=a3mn9k&site=broadly

Including this one:
"44. If trans folk do have to explain something to you that may be uncomfortable, triggering, or upsetting for us, buy us a bunch of flowers, take us for dinner, drop something into our PayPal. No labor should be free."

I can't really imagine any scenario (this one or otherwise), where an appropriate response to having an uncomfortable conversation is to follow up by transferring money to the other party by PayPal Confused

hipsterfun · 06/12/2018 21:56

their "female" practice - that the male wears dresses, make-up, has long hair, speaks in a softened voice and has mastered the NHS lessons in bumswishing?

Can I get a referral from my GP? Asking for a friend, obvs Grin

ABitCrapper · 06/12/2018 21:56

Yeah I've only recipied when it was the midnight mysoginist, or I thought it was.

frazzled1 · 06/12/2018 21:57

an especially narrow vision of womanhood

That'd be the vision that excludes penis people..... Hmm

Women swapping recipes instead of answering a post, properly, obediently and thus derailing someone trying start a bunfight must be very annoying, yes.

However TRAs did complain to HQ that women were very transphobically discussing breakfast ideas and ignoring their provoking posts, which was just mean when they'd come here for a fight. So MNetters started getting deleted for talking politely and with interest to each other about recipes. This is just one sad example of the 'shocking disobedient women transphobia' Eve describes. And MNHQ are on it. No one is now allowed to discuss breakfast. Or Weetabix.

You can only conclude really; women are just about allowed to breathe. If they don't take big breaths.

HQ have banned Weetabix? ShockShockShock

Melanippe · 06/12/2018 22:04

Knicknackpaddyflak real women don't take deep breaths because our girdles that hold our matronly figures in check will not allow that.

I remember being surprised when this was proposed during the NUS Trans18 car crash conference. It seemed some did by way of reparation.

Waterparc · 06/12/2018 22:07

"Ooh waterparc what were you trying to say? Was it about trans stuff or something else?"

can't remember now. It's happened a couple of times after name-changes. I was too indirect/posing exploratory questions. It doesn't work on this sort of forum.

I now just channel Steve Crowder of "Louder with Crowder" fame and say "my position is X" or "I think X" and it doesn't happen any more.

BeanBagLady · 06/12/2018 22:07

I am just so so sick of the language.

How can it be ‘transphobic’ to believe that while people are free to live within whatever gender construct they like, sex is actually the foundation of identity for many women. How can it be ‘transphobic’ to not want my own identity defined by someone else’s gender dysphoria? I’m being me, they’re being them, all cool.

LuggsaysNotaWomen · 06/12/2018 22:08

Wait, wait, wait, WAIT!

Can you all just slow down with the bedding talk for a minute because we haven't even discussed mattress type yet. Now, for a hotbed I think it definitely needs a memory foam topper (discuss) but are we going standard or full orthopedic because my post babies pelvis needs to know before I can commit to getting into any kind of bed, toxic or otherwise?

R0wantrees · 06/12/2018 22:10

HQ have banned Weetabix

I have weetabix, its not banned.
Not eating it hot with bananas though.

Squall · 06/12/2018 22:10

Weetabix has been banned because it is the most yucky food in the world, especially with warm milk and banana. Not a TRA, but I’ve run out of sensible things to say.

LuggsaysNotaWomen · 06/12/2018 22:14

Weetabix in milk is like Shreddies vomit. It's wrong on so many levels.

R0wantrees · 06/12/2018 22:14

Now, for a hotbed I think it definitely needs a memory foam topper (discuss)

No... its already a hot bed.
I will become a puddle!
May we have an alternative option available, perhaps by a window?

Knicknackpaddyflak · 06/12/2018 22:16

Not only rebelliously GCing Weetabix but now you want a toxic coldbed? Shock

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 06/12/2018 22:17

Perhaps it could be a hotbed at one end & a coolbed at the other?
